First off, thank you for this video. It's given me a future project to work on! Next, i have the pb12 so it basically the same as yours but my two front L/R speakers are the same SONY ones but i believe mine are a generation ahead cuz the grills on yours are the same for my surround ones (smaller ones though). lol. I bought my two front ones a few years later from when i purchased my now surround (was using them as my front ones for the time being) and the rest. I just thought it was funny how almost similar equipment we have knowing there are a lot of types of speakers out there. EDIT: My surround with the same grill as your front ones: SS-MB115 My current front towers that i believe are a generation older than yours: ss-mf600h

Thanks for responding mate. When turned on doesn't turn on the main on light, only the digital volume window in the front lights up and when turning the volume control up and down you'll see digits going up and down showing the volume levels. I had a good look at the circuit and noticed there is a light brown small burnt area with damaged led trace and tried re-soldering but got worse and couldn't repair it.

Thank you very much for post the video! My Definitive Technology Super Cube Reference subwoofer has the exact same 60-cycle hum as yours without any source connected to it except the power supply. I checked the capacitors, visually and with a tester, and they were good. I watched your Part 2 of the video on how you checked the diode bridge rectifier and did the same on mine. When I reversed the negative and positive, I also got readings. So, I think I will try to replace it. My question is how do I know what specs of diode to buy because I only saw "R S ..." on the top row, "GBU 8J" on the middle row, and "- AC +" on the bottom row? I would appreciate it very much if you and/or anyone could give me some guidance on this. Thank you so much in adcance!

I have owned this model of sub since 2008 and it has always treated me good. I have recently begun remodeling the maneatre. Yes, a cross between mancave and home theatre. I did dat. At any rate I'm on my third and looking for my fourth. Gonna have some good bottom with POWERBASS10 x 4. In other news, a neighbor gifted me a JBL SUB145 and the green light comes on but no sound. Upon inspection of the guts I find some crusty beige stuff that looks like dried caulk all up and down the two 6800mf 50V missile silos. I'm gonna go out on a limb and presume to know that these things do not indeed get caulked with beige colored goo in the manufacturing process. I'm telling you it's all over the neighbor's house and the front yard and a few lawn ornaments and everything. Is it a matter of getting down to antique painting restoration techniques and chipping away one tiny pixel parcel at a time in order to make this right? Or is there an easy peasy chicken greasy method to this madness?
@VestigialVoice
@VestigialVoice 4 года назад
People just giving you subwoofers, Finn? No wonder, you certainly have a way with words :) If it is a blown cap, it's a little funny the sub wasn't making noise with an intact fuse, but stranger things can happen. I trust you checked the simple stuff like volume knobs, wiring connected to the speaker, etc. Do either of the caps LOOK irregular (as if their insides are now their outsides)? *Refer to my part 2 video If it doesn't look like structural adhesive, it may very well be electrolyte and, yes, that will need to be cleaned up. Light scraping and liberal isopropyl alcohol are called for. Even if nearby circuitry appears clean, swab it with the IPA to make sure. De-solder your capacitors and test them to verify the source of your problem. If one is bad, just replace them both. I look forward to hearing your colourful results, bud ;)

Forgive me for reading between the lines, but I presume you to be asking: "Is it worth trying to fix myself," right? This is an important crossroad for any DIY fix... Ask two people, expect different responses. Personally, I would say it IS worth trying, but it ultimately depends on your comfort-level and commitment. 1. It's a ~$150 sub that you received for less. 2. Parts are very cheap and diagnostic work costs little more than time (assuming you've got entry-level equipment). 3. A repairman will start around $40, I'd imagine. If you decide to try, take before-pictures (mark + and - ends of caps, etc.), watch videos, and ask plenty of questions. Memorable parties need more than a smooth talker, they could use a strong bass-line :) I believe in you, Finn!

Hey Bro, I am from India. I have a JBL 3.1 (sound bar + 10" Sub) for the last 10 months and was in love with the performance. I used to set bass settings at 18 and was working the best for me. Now I dont get that punchy bass from sub since last month but it works(not as crisp as before). if I set to 18, its much boomy. So I set to 12 and feels somewhat okay but still some bassy beat sounds feels like hitting tin or just flat tapping. sporadically i hear some rattle/noise too from driver along with bassy rumble. One month back, I played one dolby test video at 70% volume. I believe this problem started since then. Do you suspect something happened wrong with driver or some electronic components/joints gone bad when I played a dolby test at high volume?

Ha! James, you are the man! 17,000 views and someone finally asked my opinion on its performance, thank you! I'll keep it brief... I'm probably not the audiophile that you are so, depending on use and location, I only look for a couple things in a subwoofer: Tight thump or Big thump. This JBL is located in the living room's entertainment center and I'd mainly aim for tight thump in an ideal world, however, this sub falls a bit short. If you are coming from a Klipsch ecosystem, you likely will be very disappointed in its performance, as I would place the PB10 at the low-end of the middle-tier subwoofers, both in performance and price. Keep the fun comments coming - I hope to hear from you again someday!

testing the C72 6.8uF 100v as suggested on quora reads .879 and never reaches 1 or infinite. I don't 100% understand what that means but it's faulty correct?
@VestigialVoice
@VestigialVoice 2 года назад
The LED turning green indicates that the amp is receiving an audio signal, which is a good thing. It makes me curious to know how that resistor blew. Were you there when it happened? Even if you replaced it, that doesn't explain why the circuit was drawing (or allowing) that kind of current. You may have another component that's gone bad upstream as well. Get out your multimeter, my friend, if you're up for the hunt 🍀

Just curious... Recently purchased the PB12 to replace a earlier model JBL PWS-1200 (front firing, not as deep on the bottom Hz as the PB12). Coming on and receiving signal it screeches. Going off after no signal for 5-10 minutes, does this clicking sound for about 15 seconds. Anyone know if this is normal? Or am I about to need this fix? Works GREAT, by the way!!!
@VestigialVoice
@VestigialVoice 3 года назад
Norseman!!! You're comment is a bit difficult to decipher :) Please correct me: 1. Which is giving you the funny noises, the old one or new one? 2. These clicking sounds only last for 15 seconds, then it resolves and sounds great? 3. Does it click upon shut down or startup? It is normal for the subwoofer to enter a "sleep" mode when signals have not been received for an extended period of time. Often, the LED will change colors when this occurs. Hope to hear from you soon, brother ;)
@uncnorseman2670
@uncnorseman2670 3 года назад
@@VestigialVoice Sorry for the muddle... The start up is a screech and then when it doesn't receive signal for a bit, it does this clicking upon going into sleep mode, like a wood pecker (hence the sub's nickname, Woody!). I actually went into the box as according to your video and a couple of the caps look ALMOST as bad as yours. Still works, but I am going to change the two that look puffed up and see if that doesn't improve things. For now, it powers down after the clicking and gives GREAT bass on start up after the screeching sound. I haven't seen anyone comment on these symptoms, hence my question.

I know this is a crazy old video but I have a PB10. Had it for years and has been great, until an issue came up randomly. Normally the sub will detect sound and come on and stay on and running and when sound stops it will stay green for about 10 seconds or so then turn red and will go to sleep or whatever it does, but lights will go red. Now you half to have the sound turned up way high or the lights kinda are half green and half red and the sound is intermittent. I pulled the board out cleaned everything off of dust and such. Fuse is fine. No bulges. Messed with settings, nothing helps. It was fine forever now this. Any suggestions?
@VestigialVoice
@VestigialVoice Год назад
I've had a similar experience, fed. This powered sub appears to require a stronger and stronger signal (volume) in order to change from hibernation mode to active. It certainly could be a component that is beginning to show its age, but I haven't dug through the minutiae of testing each individual part on the board. That being said, as a workaround, I manually dial up the bass signal sent from the receiver (+5dB) and the PB10 is much less reluctant to engage. Happy thumping, bud 😊

@VestigialVoice 4 года назад
Jaq, thank you for the comment, my friend. Just to be clear, you are using the soundbar along WITH the subwoofer, correct? Is the subwoofer's LED light on? Let's try a couple easy things: 1. Turn up the bass using the remote control (make sure it isn't muted or on a very soft setting) 2. Use a screwdriver and open the subwoofer to verify the fuse is in place AND not burned out. I've heard these fuses can rattle loose and, of course as a safety measure, they may always blow. Use your multi-meter to verify fuse continuity. 3. While you are interrogating the subwoofer, make sure the red and black wires are still connected on both ends. Let me know how it turns out :)

Geez, sorry for the late response. RU-vid is not sending me notifications on replies >:( It really sounds like your board is not translating the audio signal and transferring it to the woofer. @VestigialVoice
@VestigialVoice 4 года назад
The simple answer is: you have a short circuit in an unburned-down-house. Fuses prevent excessive current and ultimately excessive heat. You did not provide much information about your system, but I would recommend checking your PCB for visual signs of scorch marks, crossed circuit lines, or blown/failing capacitors as illustrated in this video. If that is unrevealing, then the job becomes a bit more technical. Having received several comments regarding the next steps to take if caps continue to blow, I've shot new footage to help address these issues. Hopefully I'll have it edited for the channel by the end of the week, so stay close and good luck, bud!
