Before removing a sending unit which is more time and pain in the butt than just removing the outer fairing and check the gage. I imagine that the gage would be the first thing anyone would analyse. I read online a procedure many years ago that if the gage goes from zero to full real fast when checking it out that the gage is bad...it should go slowly to full because the buffer is actually working inside. I can't tell you which pins you need to check to do this because it was many years ago I read what the procedure was.
