@@tubecrap1 agree that is seems very expensive, especially when compared to console 1, but is there a specific reason why you say it's crap ? Racks seemed to be not too bad integrated
@@youngselfofficial893 as commented separately it seems the ableton live workflow ist not well supported (no opening of plugin windows, grouping, master selection) and that is disapointing... but i start to understand that it is difficult to build/implement a device that is able to control every aspect of every software... so maybe protools which i dont know is better supported... btw. my heart - if there is some of it left - bleeds when i mention bad words on ssl as i own some other ssl gear that i would describe as best gear in town (ssl six, ssl fusion, ssl x-rack, ...) cheers
@@tubecrap1 Thanks for the info mate ! I think if you've got the wallet and the time to learn protools, you might as well stick to their official console like shaped controllers which have crazy integration with plugins... Maybe you could hint me in the right direction with this problem I have with Ableton ? Basically, 1)I map a third party plugin to a rack, 2) I save that tack as a preset 3) when I recall that rack, even if it's in the same project, all the values are reset to zero + the rack controls show that they're mapped correctly but they're sticked to the minimum value and don't respond to the rack control. It's a really weird bug that I've yet to find a solution, even after posting about it on a few forums.
@@youngselfofficial893 In Ableton Live Version 10.1.25 (my current version on a mac book pro) on Mac OS X (Mojave 10.14.6) you can save a "Audio Effect Rack" that contains 3rd Party VST Plugins with any settings. Ableton live is able to recreate all the plugin settings and all mappings within it. This works for any track you add your "Audio Effect Rack" to. It seems to be a whole other story on Windows 10 with Ableton Live Version 10.1.30 (my current version on a windows machine), there i have almost exactly the behaviour you descirbed... hmm, thats strange as this is something i expected to work like the sunrise (or maybe better sunset) everyday. I have to add that it might be a issue of a specific VST plugin... in my case i tried FabFilter Pro-Q Version 3.14 which seems to have ecactly this bug on Windows 10 with ableton live 10.1.30 (loosing Presets e.g. all bands in a "Audio Effect")... other VST plugins seem to work (e.g. Waves SSL G Equalizer). See this for a FabFilter specific issue www.fabfilter.com/forum/3381/pro-q3-doesnt-save-when-i-reopen-old-projects Fortunately it seems that i have this issue exactly with FabFilter Pro-Q 3.14 and with no other VST plugin so far. Unfortunately this is one of my most used VST that i use mostly embedded in a "Audio Effect Rack". But i expect FabFilter to find and fix this issue. What VST plugin do you have this problem with?
unfortunately one thing nobody ever mentions is Ableton's Peak + RMS meter implementation means that no DAW controller will properly display it's db meters properly. They will seem static and responsively slow, untill ABLETON FINALLY ALLOWS US TO TURN OFF RMS METERING!!!!
Wow I've been studying motorized faders controllers lately for Ableton, and the integration here seems to be the best out there, with the extra layer of SSL 360, the keyboard integration etc that overcome the limitations of MCU use with Ableton !! May I ask you a few more questions ? 1/ how do the UF8 behave with groups. Let's say I group 2 tracks kick & snare to a drum group, if I collapse the group in Ableton will I see only the drum group or the 3 tracks (group + kick & snare). It would be awesome if it followed the collapse state so if we have 8 groups we can control them at the same time without having to change banks. 2/ does the controller follow mouse selection do we have to change banks manually. Ex, the UF8 shows tracks 1 to 8 and I click on track 24, will it go there by itself or do I have to scroll there by hand on the UF8 ? But thanks the device looks amazing !!!
yup, I think this looks like the most comprehensive fader solution for Ableton yet. I would love if you could double tap the pan knob to open and spill the grouped tracks across the mixer. Like how the old icon mixers would work in pro tools. Then just double tap the main group track again to collapse. Also the fader resolution looks great! looks super smooth in ableton.
@@tulshimusic3178 hehe yes all the others are disappointing somehow, I know the workflow in Ableton is in some ways very different than other DAWs hence maybe the limited integration with 3rd party controllers. But SSL has obivously thought this through. I have no exp in Protools or any motorized faders but the behaviour you describe sounds neat !
I would love to know this as well about the group fold/unfold. I could see using this just for precise level adjustment both for tracks and sends, that in itself is worth it. However, grouping is a must and it takes away from the user experience if it's not implemented properly.
Very good questions and dealbreakers for me too. Channel selection must follow your mouse if you need it to and the behaviour when handling Ableton groups is fundamental. Really hope they have got this right, but I would bet that they haven’t been able to,
@@forwardmemory5940 Yeah I think the main culprit is the integration of mackie control with Ableton. It would be nice to have a custom script for the UF8 ... especially at this price. But I'm still drooling ....
But then you have three pieces of gear taking up space instead of one. Sure, those are flexible pieces of kit, but for me this is ticking all the boxes.
It's a tiny bit of a work around, but if you're in arrangement view you can press 'SEL' on the group channel twice, it'll open the group & show the channels. Doesn't work in Session view though but it's easy enough to switch between them
Is this channel answer the questions?)) I have one. When I'm connecting the midi-keyboard some hot keys on my regular keyboard aren't working. But it isn't always, it's sometimes. I don't know why, and reconnect isn't help.
this is crap got the UF8 and UC1, when you select the track, the UC1 channel strip doesnt match the channel selection. Also the plugin mixer doesnt show up the names of the tracks. Just says 'SSL native ....' ie its useless in Ableton. I spend $$ on this very disappointed.
I followed all the directions to set up the controller in Live and it’s not connecting for me? I have Live 11, is there another step to go through since the update from this video?
I use three different daws. Live Logic and protools. So this looks like I only need to use UF8 and all my daws are working same way. So every time when I switch between daws I dont have to rethink about key commands and so on... This is a dream come thru. Can I use UF8 to move between daws?
08:25 does this mean that Ableton does not respond to the changes of the faders? Also: Can it control other plugins as well? Such as Q3 from Fab filter and such?
Confused as to why transport controls weren't included in the design and needs to be accessed through user keys / macros? IMO this would be a key feature
Hello everyone. does everything work with ableton and ssl uf8 for you? I don't have the impression. I am thinking of returning the product. I'd like to use the send / plugin part and some other wrong functions. i think the problem stems from the ssl 360 software configuration. what do you say?
July 2022: Not enjoying my UF8 and sorely disappointed in SSL releasing new plugins and not investing in existing customers. The UF8 automation labels disappear when faders are flipped in Ableton so it’s completely unusable when I want to record automation via faders. Also no colour coding of tracks on the UF8 so navigating any project is a nightmare. This is made even more problematic when so few characters are displayed from the track name! (Really … no work-around for longer track labels? Didn’t Softube solve that one on Console 1 years ago?). And STILL no native M1. C’mon guys - If you say you support Ableton users, actually do it please. Any idea how frustrating it is to see you focus on launching new software when your existing customers tell you about the software/hardware updates we need and nothing happens!
Thankyou for this comment. These thing alone are exactly what I feared would be the 'cons' of this unit. Makes it unusable for me. You've saved me a lot of time, thankyou :)
Someone please tell me that this is faster than using a mouse, All I see is this is slowing down work flow for the sake of having (very limited) tactile control
The only thing I can see useful in this device is that Faders change positions automatically other than that most of the simple midi controllers can do that shit that this UF8 is doing and especially if you are Ableton user I cant see reason to buy this... this thing costs 1299$ ..... like big LOL for ableton user who gets this... go get Ableton Push 2 and u will get far more Superior control of your DAW rather than this crap
@@gengee21 Those are not simple drumming pads u can use them as a sequencer / piano or other functions as well and they are great adition for Live perfomance and launching many channels in same moment
Recent user of the UF8. I have a question on two functions I couldn't figure out. Is there a quick way to get a fader back to unity gain? Also how do I solo latch (solo on multiple tracks)? Thank you.
@@eturusheo6171 Yes. Under Preferences | Record Warp Launch you must have Solo Exclusive off. With this setting off, each solo key works independently and won't interact with the other solo keys.
With all respect to SSL but this device feels like dated crap to me... for Ableton user I cant see a single reason to pay 1299$ for a 8 channel slow clunky daw controller... when a user can buy Ableton Push 2 and control fully whole DAW...
you're not wrong. a small demographic will love paying 1300 just for motorized faders. i see ableton users using presonus faderport 8 strictly for the faders lol
