Who cares if this “looks amateur” the philosophy is still the same. Clean you gun like, and as thoroughly as Jerry Miculek and your gun will perform flawlessly and as it was intended to. Don’t judge a book by its cover. I’d give this guy one bullet and a pistol and you a 1000 rounds and a military grade weapon and my money still goes on him.

Every time I watch a video about something I have done many times, I still pay close attention because there might be one nugget of critical information that I hadn't thought of before. Jerry just gave about 5 more nuggets of information to pay attention to on AR's. Thanks Jerry, job well done! The bore guide is critical on AR's & small bore center fire rifles. Sloppy handling of a cleaning rod can really accelerate throat erosion just ahead of the chamber area, very detrimental to accuracy.
@debbiestimac5175
@debbiestimac5175 8 месяцев назад
What people don't realize is that when they angle the cleaning rod or pull a bore snake sideways out of the barrel on the bore side, they lap the crown of the barrel, where it seats. The only way to repair that kind of damage is to remove the barrel and have it machined in a lathe. They've made a compression leak in the chamber by not being square to bore while cleaning. OCD bore scrubbing does way more harm than good. Ask Jerry or anyone from the SoCom community.

Jerry, great presentation! From a former 91F Small Arms Repair/Artillery NCO, you've covered all the details that I'd tell my soldiers. If I was still in the military, I'd use this as part of my training regimen. I like how you clean the buffer tube and oil it, it's the same way that I do it and I would show that tip to others. One minor correction, the U.S. military uses tapered bolt action cam pins, just like yours. They might have staked it in earlier versions, but modern M16/M4 rifle/carbine's use tapered. Thanks for the presentation!

@dthundergunb3115 Год назад
I think the damn idea of brake cleaner or what I'm going to try in a bit, some carb/choke cleaner was damn genius, a strong spraying cleaner that dries quickly. Idk why I didn't think of that...if it blows the chamber clean quicker than rubbing it all out with cloth strips I'm down to with that! Just lube afterwards and I'm good to go. I'm also gonna try that on my 1977 Marlin Model 60 that old 22 gets nasty quick and the model 60 hates excess oil or lube... I wipe the guts with an oil soaked rag I use to lube my bullet molds I put the remnants of my 2 strike oil bottles on the rag and it's not failed me yet.

The sonic cleaners rock. You literally drop the parts in the pan, add the proper amount/type of cleaning additive to the water and turn it on. Run repeatedly until clean to your specifications. Parts come out as clean as the day they were made. Just beware putting certain metals in as they can become discolored or 'changed'. When in doubt RTFM.

Jerry, this is a great video and the information is wonderful! I'm a retired Police Officer Firearms Instructor "from the great state of " NewJersey and I was hoping to get more out of it (because no matter how much you know, you can always learn more) but I couldn't see what you were doing during the most critical parts of the cleaning due to poor camera work. I know it might be a pain in the neck but would you mind remaking this video using a better camera person? There's so much critical information that was lost due to the poor camera work. They say that "a picture is worth a thousand words" and it would be absolutely wonderful if you would remake this video. I always showed your shooting videos to my Officers during Firearms Training Classes and I would tell them, "Imagine pulling a car over and having someone as highly trained in firearms as Jerry Michalak jump out and start pumping rounds through your patrol car's front windshield before you get out of car, are you tactically and mentally prepared to deal with a situation like that? " Boy, that would really get my Officers thinking more tactically during their, sometimes mundane, shifts! Thank you so much for everything you've done for the shooting sports and for Law Enforcement Officers worldwide. I hope you realize that you've made a great impact on Firearms Training and Firearms Safety and have set the bar high for all of us who have welcomed firearms into their lives. I hope you, Kay, Lena and your entire "Shootout Lane" family have a wonderful Christmas Holiday Season and an awesome 2021!!! Please stay safe during these dangerous and uncertain times, my Friend! The reasoning isn't that one might be so mentally incompetent as to accidentally load the weapon & somehow cause it to discharge while the weapon is partially disassembled. The reasoning is regarding an issue of ammunition propellant becoming contaminated by volatiles in solvent solutions or from fuels such as kerosene being spilled onto cartridges. If the contaminated cartridge is fired sometime later the chemical contamination is known to cause a huge pressure spike & is likely to cause catastrophic failure of the weapon. Example: brake cleaner or kerosene puddles upon your workbench during cleaning of your weapon & the cartridges you use to loosen pins somehow rolls into that puddle of solvent or fuel or perhaps the cartridges were below the receivers being spraying with brake cleaner. Those contaminated cartridges could become mixed in with other ammo & fired. Also don't store ammo in a garage or shed where household cleaners are present, apparently doing so causes deterioration of the cartridge propellant & one critical day your weapon may go click while the bad guy's weapon goes boom.

What I like about the videos is the safety, chamber flag, no ammo on the table or near to interject into the system. I know many people that thought the gun was empty and fired off a round. I was teaching gun safety and the young lady that was teaching with me had a gun that the extractor didn't pull the round out, she looked in but really didn't look. she closed the slide pointed the barrel up and shot a hole in the ceiling of the building we were using. The owners were not happy LOL.

I use brake clean as well but when I ask the “pros” at the local gun shops they act as if I’m committing a cardinal sin. I also lube the trigger pivot points and safety. A lot of other youtubers claim no lube is needed on or around the trigger. BTW is all that Lucas product in your garage gun lube?
@killdozer3464
@killdozer3464 4 года назад
The reason shop “pros” scoff at the use of non-gun specific cleaning products is because they are cheaper than the stuff they sell. I use contact cleaner, Simple Green, CLP, good ol Hoppes n.9. With all of those and some elbow grease I can clean all of my weapons.

I miss this. Doing this in the eighties back in the barracks on the bare floor with bunkmates. Passing rolls of flannellette around. The banter, laughter, singing. (Not in US but a conscript army in a no gun for civilians country)

The best way to know and appreciate the way the whole system operates, and you have to admire the ingenuity and genius that it takes to design something like this from the beginning😲 Comes in handy when something goes wrong or doesn't work, to diagnose it and repair it there at the time if you have the parts,'take care of your tools and your tools will take care of you'!😀

Great video, Jerry. One complaint. The camera angles are bad. There's not enough close up that shows exactly what you're doing. The vise sometimes blocks what you're doing and the few close ups are not long enough or the action is slightly out of frame.
