I can't say this enough but man Bleach is really killing it. Loved this episode front to back. So happy to see Unohana's bankai animated and it was beautiful
It's almost...blissful. Orgasmic, even. She's giving everything again and she couldn't be happier. This fight is right up there with Nnoitra's fight against Kenpachi in my book.
So from my understanding. Her Bankai pretty much heals herself and probably allies based on the amount of damage she does. Now this is pretty much insane because she can fight for as long as she wants as long as there are enemies nearby.
@@yngsamsung she's instantly healing right there without using any kido, & that's after the bankai is activated. If it's just an acid based attack, they'd have been melting long before that skeleton scene. That's just what's in their heads. A symbolism for their lust over battles. Like Zaraki said, he's been "awakening". & that's how it feels like to fight using all of their power. Besides, it doesn't match with Unohana's overall theme. Despite her mastery over kido, her shikai is literally healing power. So it makes much more sense for her bankai to be the same. Albeit, with slightly different & twisted purpose. Bcus this healing is meant for her to keep fighting her enemies over & over again to satisfy her thirst over fighting.
People didn't understand this "fight": Unohana was almost killing him, this happened almost 1000 times in this fight, but in the final moment when he was dying she always healed him forcing Zaraki more powerfull to learn shikai and bankai. This is not a fight because she was so powerfull that almost killed him more 1000 times, actually Unohaha was pushing him to the edge making Zaraki BADASS in the final!
You're right, people don't. Including yourself. He isn't a friggin Saiyan. She literally states that him fighting her when he was a child caused his expectations of strength to be unobtainable, so in order to feel what he felt during their fight, he continued to shackle himself to draw out fights. Him beating her, the first person to give him a real fight, put him in a state of almost-addiction, to the point that he constantly sought out that feeling again...but nobody could give him that because he IS the strongest. This is why he wore the eyepatch and the bells, to give his enemies an advantage, to try and even the playing field. She's not 'pushing him' to anything, she's waking him up. Even he states, that he finally understood this feeling he had. The pain and cutting was only a symptom of what he sought, what he wanted was the feeling of letting loose. It wasn't 'fighting' he was after, it was 'battle'.
It's still a little weird. But I don't think it's as complicated as some people were theorizing. I know there's this acid debate, but that doesn't seem to be real, just an artistic thing. It seems like she just has control of the blood as a weapon, and it can maybe possibly also heal her.
@@yametekudaclint2093 I'm more inclined she just voluntarily died. Having fulfilled her first purpose, which was to unseal Zaraki's power, all that was left for her to do was die by Zaraki's hands, so he could actually become a Kenpachi. Not that I'm saying she'd win against Zaraki, but that in that specific scenario, she still could've recovered, but chose not to.
This is not an exact line but i really got chills when she said she learned healing so that she could keep fighting and killing. She really is my favorite captain but too bad that writer decided to let her die :(
Its because its much more horrifying. Zaraki will lower his power to fight a person with enough guts, but will kill them as soon as they falter, or let them live if he had fun. Unohana will not let them die until she is done with them, she will only allow them to draw their last breath after she has extracted every last drop of enjoyment from the fight.
Zaraki says "this is battle!" as if it was some great revelation, and ends up sounding anticlimactic. But the way he says it, "battle" and "love" are the same to him.
I used to think that way too, but I realized her dedication to her oath adds so much strength to the character, that it wouldn't be worth abandoning it for a cool shonen moment. The fact that she wouldn't even raise her sword to harm another, even to save those she cares about, just adds another layer of depth to a great character.
In the manga, when I read it, I interpreted the scene as Unohana's bankai releasing some sort of hallucinogen. I though it made sense given her medical expertise that she could cause vivid and terrifying hallucinations through some sort of chemical release to the detriment of her opponent.
@@ksoundkaiju9256 That would depend on the wound in question. Take for example the skin peeling off. I interpret that as a hallucination. On the other hand, something more mundane like blade through the stomach is probably real. Captain Unohana, as the bankai's master, would be able to discern which wounds are real and heal accordingly. Unohana's healing abilities combined with possible vivid hallucinations could account for events in the scene. Unlike other characters, Unohana doesn't seem inclined to stand around and explain the nature of her Bankai.
@@pranayravi9449 Ya I guess, but wouldn't it have made more sense for her to have joined the fray with the other captains in the fight against the Quincys and then have her train Zaraki instead of what happened? Yes that's a badass line she says, but wouldn't their main goal be to protect the Soul Society by utilizing strong people like her to kill as many of the invading Quincy as possible? Instead
The fact we finally get and explanation after almost a decade makes me so happy I recently read a novel called in marvel with zanpaktou and it had an interesting way of describing her bankai
he does look scared, compare it to other zaraki's opponents he always smiles and laughs. but you can see it in this expressions he's actually scared but both at the same time enjoying the fight.
It’s due to editing. You have to watch the episode to get the full effect. They edit these clips to avoid copyright strikes as well as to shorten the talking and focus more on the action.
She litetally killed him over and over. The part where he revives is what throws his senses off until he just stops caring and fights which is what unohana wanted.
Idk why I thought it was gonna sound like the bleach brave sounds version but the fact that it didn’t caught me so much more by surprise and I’m like oh shit it’s happening
Here's how I see it: Her shikai heals and takes in the blood of those that are inside its stomach. Her bankai then expels it to create a blood battlefield where she is in control, either using it to heal herself or melt others as well as using it as blades.
The fact she did virtually nothing before TYBW was confirmation that she was low key one of the strongest captains. And there was some Forshadowing when she would kindly tell other captains to fuck off and them getting shook.
She said that there could only ever be one kenpachi an dthat she had to fulfill her purpose. I guess that's why she didn't heal herself even though she would've been able to. She gave the power to the next generation
Her bankai is scary. That can kill and heal at the same time. Imagine someone killing and reviving you many thousands of time for pleasure of battle. Perfect bankai to train zaraki. "Kenpachi" the title belings to the strongest shinigami of a generation. That idea itself is epic. Anything involving kenoachis gotta be epic.
I kinda wish this was more explained in the anime. Made it kinda a solvable puzzle with the manga. But alone the anime I felt it came short as it didn't describe what was going on well.
Heeyyy it just occurred to me that isn't Unohana's master that guy from 0 Division that's got that hotspring of blood as his zanpakuto ability? Unohana's bankai is reminiscent of that!
So, I think the blood produced by her bankai does one of two things. 1.) It is simply an acidic blood-based weapon, and she is healing both of their injuries no matter how much they get melted. 2.) It does physical damage, but the only thing it "melts away" is inhibitions and rational thought, making both the user and the opponent further and further lust for battle and acting only on their most primal battle instincts. On a side note, blood was GUSHING out of her back at the end and she was doing nothing to heal it. Now this is entirely speculation, but I think it's possible that her bankai requires a sacrifice of her own blood for her to use it. When she is "Yachiru" Unohana, she is a maniac that throws herself into battle for pleasure no matter the risk, so I think a cost such as that could make a lot of sense and explain why she did not heal at the end: because she couldn't. Edit: I am aware that she states that she is in fact healing repeatedly. I am not calling that into question. I thought I implied that I knew this, but I guess not.
@Jesse Benjamin Alvarez again, makes sense, but the anime doesn't explicitly confirm that it's that simple...unless it's in one of those Japanese mid episode card things.
@@joelbrich2538 bleach wiki and tvtrope, usually they extract the information from other source like fanbook, novel, and etc. Well kubo never explain the detail on manga. Aside from the first match, how zaraki still alive after unohana stab her sword on his neck without being healed.
Unohana Could Win easily but to make Zaraki to gain worthiness to become Kenpachi again she need to push him man imagine that every cut slash is like burning acid that is extremely Painful yet she healed him over an over again to feed him an eternal pain
The craziest part is still that she said "I learned the ability to heal MYSELF so I could enjoy the battle for eternity." She was a master in countless sword-fighting styles and healing herself to keep going. Her power came from experience and durability. Meanwhile Zaraki uses only raw brute force, no sword styles or stances to compensate for weaknesses or even enhance his power, and does not use healing of any form to keep himself going. He's a monster of such power that he does not require any of that to go far beyond what Unohana once was capable off. That's the terrifying bit, imagine if he actually learned fighting styles and dedicated himself to mastering them, imagine if he learned healing Kidou and constantly healed himself. He would be unstoppable even without releasing his Shikai.
@@voidflesh3920 He did not reject to learn it. Central 46 pretty much forbade Yamamoto to further educate Zaraki after seeing his strength increase after just one lesson.
"In any era, there can only be one Kenpachi..." Well, considering how dangerous all Kenpachis were/are, it's the most rational decision for the Soul Society's sake. Though it'd be real fucking cool to see Azashiro, Kuruyashiki, Yachiru and Zaraki together(Not Kuganjo I don't like him for some reason lol. Ofc nameless Kenpachi's are also included).
@@anasahmad5415 it's not a plot hole, "kenpachi" Is the title for the strongest shinigami. If it is the strongest, of course they don't need a second "kenpachi"
But has she ever used her shikai in a canon source such as the manga or anime episodes that are directly tied to the manga? Cause I could ever remember it from filler episodes. Such as the reigai.
I still have questions about what the abilities actually are. Is it physical or is it mental? Are they actually meeting or was that just his feeling? A little bir of explanation would have been nice. Maybe Kubo could give a concrete answer about it.
Far as I can tell, she is healing him, and her Bankai let's heal herself as she deals damage (based on the framing of the initial clash). The only part where I'm not sure, is the melting part. Because Kenpachi sees her as a skeleton as well.
Not everything needs cocnrete expository answers. Unihana is one of those ambigous characters that you see ina completly different light when you reread the story while having this context. And so it´s fitting that the entire nature of her abilites are left somewhat ambigous even if there are some likely correct conclusions you can draw. What do you think happened and why? Kubo decided that he didn´t want to give us all teh answers about her all the way back when he was writing TYBW and I doubt he has changed his mind.
The "melting" effects literally only occur during kenpachi's inner monologue while the healing happens the second it is released why do people still think it melts?
