In this tutorial you will learn how to use Chaos Scans materials and render them in V-Ray for 3ds Max. We will go through the entire workflow starting with a little theory from the capturing process. We will then discover how to download and use those materials in your scenes and explore all the customization options that the material has. We will then find out what are the advantages and disadvantages in using those materials and compare them with traditional methods such as the standard V-Ray Material. I will finally give you my personal opinion in what kind of situations you should use them and where they can benefit your workflow
I am using 3ds Max and V-Ray 6 in this demo but you can also use similar techniques for older versions such as V-Ray 5, V-Ray NEXT and V-Ray 3 using a slightly modified workflow.

Mind you, many of the examples you posted are very old, like the hologram foil. You can tell by the file size: Basically, all materials from the library that have file sizes exceeding around 150mb are coming from the very first iteration of the Chaos Scans library. The techniques behind the shader acquisition have improved a lot over the years, both in terms of resolution and file size, because Chaos introduced compression for the materials at some point. The hologram foil is one of the oldest materials in there probably. This is also true for the visible tiling of some materials. For the newer materials, a feature called "Real-time enlargement" was introduced by Ivaylo to avoid those issues. We had that problem with a carbon-fibre material and RTE resolved this.

That's interesting, thanks for the info. I just gained access to the library recently and there is no indication which materials are new or old and potentially not recommended to use anymore. So from my perspective those issues that I showed are things that every new customer may eventually run into. And of course 99% of people would first download the hologram materials because those are the most interesting ones for testing :-) For the overall resolution with very noticable textures such as carbon, wood, etc I would still need to do more testing, but I had the feeling that many seemed quite low/blurry when doing anything more closeup. But it's great to hear that many things have been adressed and improved over time. And also good to hear that you guys are actively using them in production!

i appreciate your effort everytime you recoded a video .. its interesting .. i hope next videos about Wood Material for archviz ( Exterior Interior ).. wall,, floor .. thanks again mr.jonas ..

Whats so difficult about a wood material? :-) I would just use a diffuse, roughness and normal map and there are 1000 of sources online for that. Or what are you struggeling with? Seriously interested...

@@JonasNoell I know there are many sources .. I can also reach a good result in my work, but I was asking you out of curiosity .. because you always have easy-to-apply methods to understand things .. Also, you always have good titles for your videos..and this title came to my mind ... loll

@@JonasNoell maybe best methods for achieving floor geometry (plugin Vs height/normal texture Vs displacement) and variation in materials (for example, is there a method when when assigning random texture by X parameter to have entire plank/tile when made with displacement or plugin (all faces of it) to have the same texture?

That's wonderful! I have a question: is it possible to send materials to UE through datasmith?

It would be interesting to learn how to build a parametric hologram material :) Challenge accepted?

I didn't connect a single node in this tutorial. Can I ask what exactly is the benefit of covering half the screen with an empty nodegraph? Honestly interested.

@@JonasNoell I asked you to just use the slate material editor. But I noticed that you are using slate editor in your other video narrations

@@SerhatK. Hi, I use it whenever I think there is a benefit of using it. Normally when I connect nodes. But if just adjusting values and the nodegraph is empty then I don't use it normally as it just takes up more screen space without any additional benefit
