Isara had a shock factor. Raz had an anticipation factor. Both are equally sad, Isara being well-developed and about to build new relations only to be shot, while you knew that Raz was going on a suicide mission. To add on to Raz's death, they even have you send in a partner for his suicide mission.
@kyddosuperstar what about Imca? Also, I'll give credit that Raz went out like a boss but damn now that I finished the game and the game didn't pull the "Not quite dead" card, I miss him.
Man this was an emotional moment. Claude emotional but Raz doesn't show his own fear and feelings. He did this for his friend and squad. Raz offered himself and knew he would die. I didn't actually think they would kill off a main character. But this gives much more weight to the game.
I sent Zaiga with him. Cuz I knew that’s what he’d want to do, he looks up to Raz so much and always wants to be by his side. God I gut punched myself so hard with that choice. I used these two together for every single mission and they were unstoppable. RIP Raz and Zaiga. Love you guys o7
@@aznmyth8635 Not regular tears, these tears shred out of one's face, it was a very powerful moment, the moment Claude told Raz to get them out of there, watched it yesterday, easily one of the best moments in any media I've played/watched
Everyone talking about Raz dying. Here I am, crying cause I sent Emmy with Raz because I forgot about her sick mother and received her mom's letter in her will after the mission.
I sent Simon. I don't care what I got, I fuckin hated him anyway. It was an honour for him to die with such a hero rather than how he should've gone out: Sniped into a chasm in Chapter 9
I sent Kiegel, the veteran who lost his son in the last war. Got a letter from a soldier who once he once trained thanking him for making him the man he was.
“Please...get us out of here” That line hit me so hard😭😭😭 even though this is fiction...I can’t imagine how Claude felt ordering his best friend to do that mission. And Kai...she didn’t get a chance to give him her answer😭😭😭 RIP Raz the invincible❤️❤️❤️
@@mariobadia4553 That would have been bittersweet...and it would have been a painful ending for her to endure. It also could have blown her cover should she get pregnant.
And what's the worst? This was unreasonable sacrifice... As we know, even in 1937(after 2 years) EA and AF keeping thier war. This treaty was temporary condition. And what,s about rebel in Gallia...
The Japanese one was even more gut wrenching as the tone of the actress' line delivered quite well as you can hear the pain in her voice. This is Kai after all, the one who's usually the bad ass stoic type, but if someone important to her is gone, she'll bawl out.
Yeah, I've tried paying attention to it and it's indiscernible. Still, I'm not a native speaker of English, so you're probably right if you're a native speaker of the language.
But its activated every time she sights multiple enemies. Implying she's taking on the spirit of Raz "I'm invincible, right?". Either way my heart sinks every time
Honestly one of the greatest heroic sacrifices in ALL media history. Movies, shows, games. All of it. I thought Isara hit me hard but it just came out of nowhere. This one built up. Ordering someone to go out with him as well. Swear up a storm in hell, my glorious darcsen bastard. You deserve the title of big damn hero.
What Claude is experiencing is the burden of command, it rests on his shoulders and his alone. With command comes the very real possibility of ordering your subordinates to their deaths. Its a shitty decision, but in the end, someone has to make it.
Technically all of Squad E are Spartans. They all completed Ranger Training, which is said to be so difficult it makes the Drill Instructor from VC1 look like the Aged Gentleman.
i do like that, but really it just makes things worse to me, after finishing some of the squad missions and getting close to the cast just hurts. characters like Neige (just really love her personality) pains me to see go.
Hey, I know VC2 is contentious and all, but Zeri got out alright. His love interest did die though. And I'm pretty sure Imca from VC3 got out alright too.
@@jsh020 it's sad that this game didn't sell good. I don't know why it sold the way it did. It's a great game but the valkyria franchise will probably die
Just saying, while its incredibly sad and Raz went out a hero, I did love how you can bring him back by following a special criteria, where he appears, salutes you and goes "Told you I was invincible." Like "FUCKING DAMN IT YOU MADE ME CRY WELCOME BACK HERO!"
I was hoping they would find Raz at a POW camp and they could all survive the war, this being his actual death hit me pretty hard, since he's my favorite
Know what sucks is how useful he is. Like i barely use Riley or Kai ,but i used Raz ALL the time. I'd always have him tag along with Minerva. I wouldn't of beaten Crymaria without him.
Raz took out those two little shit chicks for me alone. He was my ace hunter. I fucking dared anyone, in any group to try him. He was that fucking good.
I used Raz all the time too. I think it’s great game design that they made Raz so useful so the player really feels the emptiness his death leaves behind through gameplay. Every time you need a good shocktrooper to get shit done, you will be reminded that he’s gone.
I found myself in several missions sending Raz forward to cover ground and bust some Imps with Kai/Leena closely behind covering his ass, these moments ran during my head in Raz's final moments
At 16:26 you could tell forseti was also affected as a hint of sadness appeared on his face as he was listening. Man that got me the most. Even though he joined the empire and went up against his childhood friends, deep down he stilled care for them.
Even if he cared for them he is still responsable for his death, I don’t care how he felt because his actions were the worst even if it was for a good cause
Maybe my opinion is not so good, but Raz's Death Chapter is much better than Isara's in every way; The player not only knows that when the Chapter ends he will lose a Character that he likes, but that he also has to give up another Character to advance, just as if it were a real war where he has to make sacrifices to win. Although Isara's painful one, they do not put a lot of emphasis on her death once the Chapter ends, besides that it was extremely sudden (I mean, SPOILER: Dying because an enemy soldier crossed your lines of defense despite the fact that You already won that battle, it's pretty much like a slap)
Agree completely. Isara’s death is very high regarded by most players but honestly it did not do much for me. As you said, the buildup for Isara was pretty weak and her death rather sudden. Raz’s death was extremely powerful, respectful toward his character, and moved the plot forward in a way only Raz could have done. Raz also is an indispensable unit in his own right while Isara’s death is not really felt through gameplay, someone just replaces her to pilot the tank.
@@misterpayah7723 Well, I think the lack of... "theatrics" and the sudden death of Isara is its strongest point, precisely because in war, death can come at any moment, in the most absurd and tragic way. That said, the follow up was indeed a bit weak (it was in fact better handled in the anime, IMO). Raz's death is certainly a more classic one but it's great to me because of the character. Raz was a great character, most loyal to his comrades and ideals, the only one who actually weighted the moral implications behind the ship's dilemma, so seeing him die is a bit like seeing the just, the worthy, die, as is often the case on the battlefield. That, in my opinion, is why his death hit so hard.
@@windwaker0rulestrue, there's much more emphasis on how Welkin was affected by everything. How he became unusually cold and inexpressive. But I think I might've cried as much at Faldio's death. He was my favourite man.
7:15 90% certain he's saying "Ai shiteru" -- the 'from the bottom of my heart, I can't be without you' level of "I love you" in Japanese. Damn this game for ripping my heart to shreds.
F. Great, great game. I'm glad they went back to the essence of the franchise, the first game. I didn't play VC3, but even though I enjoyed VC2, it just didn't capture these sad, dreadful yet epic moments like the first game. This last installment has. Thanks, Sega, for my best game of the year.
You should try VC 3, if you manage to find the english fan-translated version (you can try Romstation for that). It is in my opinion, one of the best in the serie, alongside the first, and now, the 4th Valkyria. It had excellent characters, an excellent story following a squad of dead-men walking, sent to the battlefield to die because they were all considered criminals. It really is an excellent game. The weakest of the serie definitely was the second one in my opinion, but I wouldn't say it was a bad game. Baldren was an interesting antagonist with fair points about the future of Gallia. Ah, and obviously, I won't talk about "that" game. It doesn't exist in my eyes. Anyway, if you can try Valkyria 3, do it. It's awesome, despite the limitations of the psp. And It has Imca, who's one of my favourite character in the franchise. ... Until Raz that is. Shine on, you crazy legend.
Well, you can play both games on PC using RomStation, which ports PSP and other console games on PC. That's where I played it. And this version is even (partially) translated.
Raz reminds me a lot of Zack Fair, which automatically fascinates me. In that mission, I sent Raz with Ryan. Ryan’s last words more or less shows pretty much shows Venom Snake feels. It did send the chill across my spine to see a legend reliving again in another game.
same, if not Ryan then I woulda send Vancey too. She's a veteran with survivor guit and PTSD. It's better for her to go out as a hero like Raz than taking her own life when she came home.
"Hey, I signed up for this. Don't bust my best friend's balls over it." If that's not the makings of the best wing-man you could ever ask for, I don't know what is.
RIP guy I sent with Raz the first time not realising I’d miss them... so I reloaded the save and sent Zaiga because he couldn’t live without Raz. RIP Raz and Zaiga
Zaiga sounds like a fitting choice to die with Raz the first time but think about this: Zaiga volunteers but Keigel cuts him off and volunteers himself, saying he will not let the young ones sacrifice themselves for him or for anyone. Zaiga insists, determined to follow Raz anywhere even to death, but Raz gives him a bro hug and thanks him for always backing him up but this time, he wants Zaiga to not do that. He then leaves with Keigel, with Zaiga joining the distraction team instead, so in a sense, he's still fighting alongside his bro for his final mission. Ryan and Ronald joins the distraction team as well, thinking of it as a sendoff to their comrade. Gertrude, relieved that Zaiga will stay, also joins the team and asks Vancey to join them too. Vancey tells her that she almost volunteered to join Raz but Keigel beat her to it. Keigel died to let Raz proceed to their goal. He died with a smile knowing he'll be reunited with his son. Raz died shortly after destroying the generator, becoming a hero. Zaiga, remembering how Raz was always the one backing him up and not the other way around (recollecting his Squad Story), was devastated that he was unable to actually back him up. Gertrude and Vancey approaches him while Ronald and Ryan joins them not a minute later, sharing a toast. A letter of gratitude was found on Keigel's stuff. It's a letter from one of the recruits he trained as a drill sergeant who, in my head canon, is a Darcsen. Futher explaining why he'd be glad to die with Raz and save Zaiga's life.
Man that's super similar to how I envisioned that situation going down, but I liked to think that Zaiga being hard headed, would argue with Raz about being denied his moment to help his idol in a life or death situation, but then be knocked out cold by Raz since he didn't want Zaiga to give his life away after Zaiga essentially became Raz's successor, Vancey would then try to speak up to volunteer but be cut off by Kiegel at the end, or atleast that's how I like to headcannon that situation, I haven't watched or played this game since I beat it ywars ago, and while I know this post is old, I thought it was pretty cool seeing that someone else had a very similar idea.
Really...Even though this scene was sad, what REALLY got me was all the items you got after the mission. Mementos. Medal of Honor. That's when everything fell apart for me.
Ngl, I was already spoiled that Raz would die before I played the scene and man, doing the mission knowing you're sending your own troops to die was such a horrible feeling.
I know I'm late, I just got into this game. Damn this was an emotional hit. You know he was just as scared, but also that he saw his life as a small price to pay for all his friends and his love. This series is so amazing.
Saw this coming awhile away. Any character that goes on and on about how unstoppable they are, how invincible they are, etc is going to end up with this happening
I mean i didnt expect them to pull the trigger on a playable character but once the mission came i knew they werent getting out of a death. Ithought they might pull something with the person you snet with him but no
Thats the truel maddening part to me. Like ryan was my go to shocktrooper even more than Raz, and i still would have sent the old dog out in a heart beat. Raz didn't deserve this
I originally sent Jimmy in there with him. And then he said something about not being able to meet his son before dying, so I reloaded and Sent in Kiegal. I figured he should be able to join his son.
It's always darcsens that gets the end of the short stick. I don't know what happened to Imca, or Zeri. Gursug looks like he have death flags on his back too.
I am actually working on a multi ending fanfiction for VC 5 where Raz is rescued in the A ending. In the B ending the protagonist ignores the centurion distress signal and after the war drinks himself to the bottom of the bottle for abandoning his fellow soldiers. In the C he commits suicide. There is also a non-cannon D ending where the war never ends in a ceasefire and Claude activates the A2 bomb.
Keigel is old wolf, but he is best of all lancers, so i didnt sent him :\ Sent Hanna instead, her personality fits Raz so much, just as brave damn girl.
The game protagonist (Claude), who seemed to always find a way out to this point, breaking into tears and begging for his friend to save everyone, to save him, such a powerful scene.
Such an unknown, underrated gem of a game! It's a shame more ppl didn't know about this Masterpiece! One of the very few modern day Japanese titles with actual good writing!
Odin wasn't a criminal? He was a NEET who got signed up for the war by his parents because they wanted him to get out of their house and do something with his life
Wanna hear interesting take? Valkyria Chronicles 4 is Gurren Lagann. Raz is Kamina, strong and charismatic person serving as an example for Claude. He’s impulsive and reckless but not stupid. In a past he gave Claude a good punch, it made Claude’s thoughts clear and brought him back to his senses. Raz fell in love with a sniper girl. He made an ultimate sacrifice doing a suicide mission to save the whole operation and his friends (it fact this is more Kittan’s moment than Kamina’s). Raz has straight reference to most famous Kamina’s phrase in one of the side missions Claude is Simon, he was weak and cowardly person in past but had grown into a strong leader Waltz is more rival for Claude than enemy, ending up helping him, just like Viral Operation Northern Cross is Gurren dan final mission to take down the anti-spiral: one ship is changing through the enemies to reach their planet/capital Ship is powered by spiral/valkyria power, produced by person inside vessel core And yes, both stories have sniper girl with big boobs I love TTGL with all my heart and I would never thought that its new incarnation would come from a VC’s military drama
I was watching that scene again and judging from the way his mouth was moving, it looked like he said arigato a-ri-ga-to, and it fits the way how many times his mouth move. Japan has this weird way of expressing their love for someone where they don't usually say "I love you." BUT! Raz has already expressed his love for Leena/Kai anyways, and her response was a kiss to the forehead which we can all agree that she feels the same way. Leena feels the most as she painfully cries out Raz's name multiple times when he got shot and died making her not wanting to believe that he was gone which is why she called out, but knew he was gone as she cries in the end. The Japanese original voice did it much better with the tone. R.I.P Raz you deserved a better ending
lol it's kinda hard to sync up from Japanese to English, usually results in more mouth moving and sometimes no movement at all. Yeah, since he used to be a smoker and all.
I'm pretty sure it's either a-i-shi-te-ru or dai-su-ki-da-yo, both of which are to express I love you. I'm leaning towards the latter though due to how his mouth movements look like.
