It was up to her to take the necessary precautions. Besides most victims get clever about sending money to scammers. Suspicions are raised when there's a change in their financial behaviour. I.e asking family and friends for money when they are known to be responsible or have difficulty asking for help.

Calls aren’t safe. They can use technology to hide their accents or teach themselves to speak in a more neutral accent. Video chats are also becoming unsafe - some scammers have access to technology that can fake that too. People, if it sounds too good to be true, question it!

A couple of them I turned it around on them and said I was a doctor in Syria on a NATO peace keeping top secret mission and I can’t get to my banking account.

Some of these scammers, especially the pig butchering ones, will talk to these people for weeks, months, even years, before asking for money. Even someone you've never met will stop feeling like a stranger when you talk to them every night for 3 months.

Yeah one should never hand out or loan the money one can't afford to lose to anyone at all, let alone someone you have never communicated with otherwise than through internet. That is the first rule to not get scammed. If you have never met the person or don't know them through other people who you know offline, never send money. But them asking for gift cards is a reaaally red flag. I might somehow understand one time 20 dollars but if it becomes a habit of asking 50 here and 100 there and the amount gets bigger and bigger, it is very suspicious. And if they start getting hostile or guilt play when you don't give them money, they don't love you. No one who loves another person, wants them to sell their home or take big loans and getting bankrupt.

Several compounding reasons, usually they're older people so they're unfamiliar with the technology being used to scam them. They don't know photoshop, they don't know how to recognize fake websites, older people are also more trusting of strangers, they grew up in an era when people looked out for each other, neighborhoods were safer, and there was no internet that would allow Nigerians to reach people in America to trick them. They didn't grow up with smart phones/internet/technology so they aren't as aware the current generation who've been online since childhood.

I don't understand it either. Maybe it's because my family was very poor growing up, but I wouldn't give a total, random stranger who messages me online 50 cents, much less thousands of dollars. Money is too damned hard to come by. Most of us work very hard to build comfortable lives for ourselves. Which was:" A man or young man (with good intentions and values) will never ask a woman or young woman for money. This detrimental to his honour". She's 57 years old. She was married for " almost 38 years" and she's been divorced for 17 years. Unless my math is really far off, 38 plus 17 equals 55. Are we supposed to believe she got married at the age of two years old? Something that I cannot understand is how scammers can so easily convince their victims that I have a problem and you have to send me YOUR MONEY to solve MY PROBLEM. REALLY? If it's your problem, use YOUR MONEY to solve the problem. Come on ladies, let's use a bit more common sense in this thing.

I meet men in person that I would never give more than gas money to. If he asks me for money then he’s not self sufficient. I own my own, and I think a man looking to date should at least be able to pay all of his bills. Two days after talking to a man on a dating website, he will ask to FaceTime or video chat with me. My mother is 85 and doesn’t know how to text and even she wouldn’t fall for this mess. I don’t understand these people. Every cell phone made after 2016, excluding burner phones and flip phones have video chat capability. Where is the problem? Kids over 10 have cell phones! Why give your hard earned money to someone you never met? When you date in person you never or hardly ever lend money to that person, so why give it to an invisible person? Use my motto See Me Or Leave Me Alone!

Dating sites are not the problem (although I wish there was some way for the sites to make sure the person is ACTUALLY the real person). Ask to VIDEO CHAT the first day (or within the first week at most) and if they refuse MOVE ON, they're most likely NOT the person in the pictures. If they refuse, let it go. If they can MESSAGE, they can most likely video chat.

I've stopped being friends with a guy I was talking to online for nearly a decade from when I was a teen until my early 20s. He always told me his camera wasn't working and he had older pictures of himself. We were supposed to meet in person 3 times and each time he had an "emergency" with his mom or older brother in jail. After the last time, I blocked him! Thank God I never gave him money lol but he did piss me off a lot tho! Looking back it now, he was probably lying about his looks or was an older man! I spoke to him few times over the phone but he sounded like a regular American guy with no west African accent.

If he could not leave until he had paid for the broken equipment, why didn't he let her know before telling her he would be on that first flight??? That right there should have been another red flag. It doesn't matter what a victim looks like physically, their level of insight or their age. All victims have a lot of pain over these events. And further, you can be the best looking, young and smart, but you still will have some trouble finding a good person to fall in love with. We are all flawed in many ways. Real love doesn't look at appearance, age or many other things. It is irrelevant to getting hurt. They don't deserve it. No one does.

I think the attention is the drug, it doesn't matter if it's real or not - it is really happening in their life. They will pay any amount of money for that dopamine hit - it's no different than any other addiction - they keep it from their family, it robs them of their dignity, they feel shame, and it's overtaking & ruining their lives. They would probably benefit from a 12 step group.
