In America this is a side dish. We do not eat it alone. It is served with a steak and green beans so it then is filling

If there is cheese in the dish, it is NOT scalloped potatoes. Adding cheese means it is now a Potatoes Au Gratin. Scalloped potatoes are much simpler. Most recipes call for the potatoes to be baked in a basic cream sauce (usually a mix of milk and heavy cream), and that's it. Potatoes au gratin are a bit more decadent. They are made with lots of cheese sprinkled in between the layers of potatoes and also on top of the dish.

I make mine with thinly sliced potatoes, chopped onion, sauce is butter, flour, milk/cream when thickened, add cheese. Mix together then bake. So good. I think they’re actually Au gratin potatoes if you include cheese. Scalloped don’t have cheese.

@Sonya Wasmer Yes. That's very similar to the way I make them, except I thinly slice my onions. I also agree that scalloped and au gratin get mixed up quite a bit. The best way I could ever come up with to differentiate between them was to remind myself that the French word "gratin" basically means "to grate" as in grated cheese. I believe that traditionally, it can also mean other ingredients (such as buttered bread crumbs) that are sprinkled or spread on top of a dish/casserole, before going into the oven or under the broiler, but my mind just goes straight to 🧀. lol Since cheese is such an unknown item in their traditional cuisine, I'd love to see the producer show the team a few videos of all of the many different cheeses from around the world and how they're made and used in different ways on their own or in different kinds of dishes.

And herbs/spices are great on it, too! One thing i love to do with potatoes is chop them into chunks and par cook them in water with saffron, chili powder, paprika. Then you dry them off and fry them in ghee 🤤. I heard that's a Spanish dish, but who knows! ✌️💚🕊

I don't know for sure where it was invented but I think it might have been France because the base sauce is a Béchamel which is one of Classic French cuisine's Mother Sauces. Also there's a French dish called Patates Dauphinoise (Dolphin's potatoes) which was served to French Royalty in the 1800s that is very very similar to scalloped potatoes they even have a variation of Dauphinoise with cheese called Au Gratin.
@miriamepage6991
@miriamepage6991 Год назад
First mention of Gratin Dauphinois (another name for patates dauphinoises btw) was in 1788: they were served at a dinner given by a duke for municipal officials in South East of France in the Dauphiné region. However potatoes and cream were also ingredients used in England so it is also possible that a similar dish was developed there too. This looks more like the French version with the cheese. Pommes Dauphines (Dauphine potatoes) are a completely different dish as it is more like a fried mashed potato pastry (also delicious).

Raeen is correct. We do have this in the US. British islands have brought a number of foods to other countries including the US. Each chef will sometimes add something to it, (spices, different add-ons, bacon bits, etc...) I'm in the state of Michigan, USA. My family mostly have scalloped potatoes as a side dish. Some may have it as a main dish. We use a fork when we eat scalloped potatoes, but since we eat it as a side dish, we usually have nearly a full set of flatware/utensils next to the plate including napkins. We usually have a beverage to wash it down.

Loved the song, Raju! They got almost all the ingredients but milk or cream. I agree with other commenters; one episode you need to make all about cheese, with several different types for them to try plain. They'll be amazed at the different flavors. As to bread: our breads in the West are mostly the raised breads made with yeast, like India's pav. When I was growing up, we pretty much had bread with every meal, but especially dinner. We didn't use it to pick up the food (except occasionally), but it was a necessary part of the meal. Since then, we've learned how too many carbohydrates are bad for your health, especially if you don't do hard physical work like we used to do. So many of us now only have one carbohydrate with meals at home. Eat bread, leave out potatoes, which are also a carb. It gets confusing. 😄

Scalloped potatoes and au gratin potatoes are usually served as a side dish to the main course, not as a stand alone dish. Most sources say that scalloped potatoes has no cheese and came from England and au gratin potatoes have cheese and came from France. But it seems many countries have their own versions of baked sliced potato dishes, some sauced and some cheesed. While I always thought the potato itself originated from Ireland, it seems it actually originated in Peru. I wish to point out to our Indian friends who must have roti with all meals, many of us try to eat what we think of as a balanced meal. We try to eat a protein food (meat or vegetable based), a starchy food, and one or two vegetables. Sometimes we combine them in a single pot and sometimes serve them separately. Starchy foods are those high in carbohydrates such as breads (rolls, buns, roti, tortilla, biscuits, scones, etc) potato, rice, beans, pasta, and sweets. Fruits do have a high starch content but because of their nutritional value, we usually put them in the vegetable category. It gets really tricky for diabetics like me because we need a certain amount of carbohydrates but not much. Even meats contain some carbohydrates. So I will not eat bread if a starchy vegetable is part of the meal or if I am eating a fruit. If I want to eat a sandwich, I will use just one slice of bread or half a bun and use a fork and knife instead of holding it in my hands. Better yet, I will wrap the sandwich contents in a large lettuce leaf and use that as the bread.

You slice raw potatoes and add a sauce made with water salt pepper flour to thicken and butter. When the sauce is thin, add cheese and melt. Then pour on potatoes in a covered dish. You can add onion and chicken also. Add more cheese inside and one top. When potatoes are soft, take the top off and toast the cheese on top.

Gubbu is right. Ghee (clarified butter) is used much less than butter in the west than in India. Even when I cook Indian dishes I use butter instead of ghee because I agree with Gubbu that it tastes better. Ghee is more popular in India because it doesn't need to be refrigerated, so its still very good flavor can be enjoyed in villages where there is no or intermittent electricity.

Raeen, the America we know is only two hundred years old, whereas Europe’s history goes back two thousand years and more. Cheese is made in the countries that have dairy farms to produce lots of milk, butter and cheese. There are hundreds of different types of cheese, and some countries produce special cheeses exclusive to their region. Many things can affect the flavour of dairy products: different types of grasses and plants that the animals eat, the climate of the area, the careful attention to detail when looking after the animals, their health, diet, etc. cattle, sheep, goats, buffalo and other animals can be used to produce different dairy products.

I don't know where it is from, but this has been a popular dish in Australia for a very long time. We call it Potato Bake. You slice the potato thin, layer them in a large flat tray around 3" deep or so, adding garlic powder or preferred spices and cheese between layers. You can also add some bacon batons or ham, after layering, fill spaces by pouring in cream or slightly thin, (it will thicken while baking,) white/ bechamel sauce according to your tastes, leave it sit for a while for the air bubbles to rise. This takes at least an hour to bake in an oven, without burning the cheese topping. We can cover it with aluminium foil for half of the time, to promote cooking of potato, or cover it later to stop cheese topping from burning too much. It has to cook the potato until softened, and not just the top layers. We have some english expats on you-tube, saying it is a wonderful dish, but they did not know of it until coming to Aussie. The american who reacted to them, had not seen it before. We do not put sugar in it, it is a savoury side dish, often eaten at parties, with other foods as well. You can have this with bbq meat or roasted meat or baked chicken. Whatever you like.

I think it's probably American because it has French and English components and Americans love to add cheese to everything. Americans blend cuisines because we are a blended people. It is eaten as a side dish at my house. We have steak or chicken or whatever protein we want as the main. This would be the carbohydrates side dish and we eat some sort of green vegetable or salad as a side dish. We also have some bread product available for every meal if folks want it .

Let our cook know it consists mainly of washed thin sliced potatoes, chopped onions,(optional), milk and a little flour to make a creamy sauce, salt, pepper, grated cheese, then baked until the top is browned, and the pottoes are tender, I would like to see if he could make this dish in his own home.

@3251JOE

To be technically correct, scalloped potatoes should only consist in sliced potatoes, butter, flour and milk sauce and flavored with onion and a little thyme, baked until a brown crust forms on top. The addition of cheese make this a potato gratin dish. Both are, in my opinion, equally delicious as a side dish with meat and a cooked, green vegetable.

This dish totally encapsulates everything that is good and right with these "backward" villagers; they're fearlessly willing to try and to learn about new things whether that's water parks, drive-thru McDonalds, Subway turkey subs, modern kitchen gadgets, the microscopic world, dark chocolate waffles, Mexican elotes, and, well, the list just goes on and on. . I wish more of us here in the "developed" world were curious and accepting of the new stuff that comes our way. And while I cannot change anyone else's willingness to be so, I can promise that I will become more like these fine people and be open to the new in my own life. . Be well, Villagers, be well.
