Visual: The Most Confusing Role in Kpop 

I think the visuals have a lot of pressure on them because they get compared to other visuals in the industry. People on one hand call them untalented and on the other hand put them on a pedestal and compare their visual. It's actually the toughest position to maintain. Once you're considered a visual you can't escape that tag.

Btw: I agree that the 'face of the group' aka the center is the more important role, because it doesn't only evolve around looks. Only labeling someone a visual because someone doesn't really have other talents just kinda makes you a prettier filler. It's not per se a compliment towards their talents.

It’s pretty funny to me how I never realised just how meaningless the visual role was until I tried explaining it to one of my family members, and her response was something along the lines of ‘isn’t that just a nicer way of saying they’re untalented?’ This isn’t to say visuals are untalented, but it’s weird when you look at bigger groups and a member’s only main position is as a visual, rather than as a singer, dancer or rapper.

When I first got to K-pop and heard of the visual roles, I just thought that's an excuse to say "you're not talented but beautiful" when was not even true. Also it feelt so backhanded to say everyone is beautiful but this person is so beautiful let's give them the title "visual"

Yeah i agree, fotg and visual should have never been separated. All idols are pretty but being able to represent the group and be an attractor of fans is a bit more meaningful than just visual cause you're pretty, because they all are, it sets you apart more.

Face of the group = the member that fits the group concept the most. Like karina she have ai beauty, jennie fits because she can be cute and badass (black&pink) etc. Visual = simply who fits the kbs

I get that maybe visuals bring attention to the group or smtg but tbh I've never seen anyone really be interested in the group because of the visuals. It's mostly because of the face of the group or other talents

yoona is the original visual but i really don’t think it was a “role” to be fulfilled at least at that time. but it because a role because yoona got so many cf deals thanks to her visual. you need to be a visual aka pretty to get all these other roles that require “beauty”.

I feel like having a visual doesn't make any sense. ALL of the members are attractive its like deciding which one is the most attractive.

I also agree visual postion is sometime bizarre.but these visuals bring many fans to groups and ease out the pressure in debut time. Specially when visual members go viral people search about groups because of them. Also choosing who is more handsome,pretty or attractive by voting is also useless. No one is the most attractive or pretty or handsome. I wonder why people don’t take time to criticize these too and same goes with shipping idols.

When i entered kpop world i thought that a visual was the person who always is good looking, i mean, they are without makeup, with makeup, pony tail, bald, idk, at every minute they would be beautiful if you take a picture of them, like, they are photogenic, i thought that was the role of a visual

I think the visual culture in kpop is total nonsense idols like jisoo and Jin were picked bcoz they fit the beauty standards. yes they may have improved later on but imagine the trainees along with them who were more talented more skillful but couldn't make it bcoz of what- others are more pretty !!

I don’t think as an international fan i care about kbs or who is more or less beautiful first of all we love their music not their face and only the k netizens keep buzzing about who fits the kbs and who does not

As an American with a background mostly in indie music, which isn't strongly focused on choreography or looks (sometimes it is!), I find "visual" confusing. In most groups I like, there are usually more attractive members, but I think generally looks aren't everything. Singing, dancing, and personality are just as important as looks. An attractive member with weak vocals isn't worth more than a less attractive member who is more talented at their art. Red Velvet is my favorite group, but I don't see how this applies... like, Irene is very traditionally beautiful, but her personality is mild. Joy is equally attractive, but taller than the rest, who are all the same height. Yet Seulgi and Wendy are the most outgoing and as an English speaker, Wendy is the "voice" of the group, yet, despite all this, Yeri is my favorite. I think that kpop can try and force roles but there are so many idols and fans that different things will always attract different people to different groups and members. Like, Seeun is my favorite in STAYC but Yoon is clearly "visual" and J is really uniquely talented. And in Aespa, Karina is "visual" but Winter is my favorite and Ningning has a really likable personality and Giselle's English skills make her a good voice for English speakers. Really, the industry should focus on tight-knit groups which have all the necessary traits, instead of building a group around a visual. As a casual fan, I'm more likely to watch extra content if I like all the members. It's okay if they aren't supermodels, they are musicians! Entertainers! And of course, they are people! I think this is an area both Eastern and Western industries struggle with, but I think the kpop model of groups is better at dealing with this than the western model of solo artists, as they must be everything to everyone.

The last comment of make the members more stressed reminds me about Park Bom all the comments about her appearance, even the CEO telling the group their ugly, obviously idk Bom but I think the surgeries that she got was mainly because of those comments 😞

Honestly visual is for the people who don't succeed in something required in K-pop (dancing, singing, etc.) so instead of improving they just put a visual tag on them if they fit the KBS.

I remember that Jin said in an interview in Suchwita that he used to feel sad because everyone had something where they are good at but he don't have anything, I am happy that he made a special area for him in the group and I think that he really shines while singing ballad songs especially in their Japanese albums he shines the most ,I appreciate him for that .he did so hard work to become good at singing, and dancing even if he was choosen as a visual only .

Yeah there maybe more talented idols than the visual of K-pop groups but BlackPink and BTS would be incomplete without Jisoo and Jin

I've followed kpop and basic aspects of the Korean culture since 2005 when I was still a minor. Being this long into kpop for over 15 years def gives you a proper insight on what the Korean beauty standard actually is. I've even been to Seoul myself and got direct beauty talks with Koreans themselves. You don't need to be Korean to understand this as long as you're actually invested enough for a longer period of time.
