On this cook, I give the Himalayan salt block a try. I took 2 beautiful Wagyu Ribeye Steaks form Midland Meat Co and prepared them 2 different ways. One with only black pepper and one with some beef rub from Victory Lane BBQ. Both steaks were really good but I was surprised on how little salt flavor actually transferred to the steaks.
Thanks for watching

Hey Joe nice test. I've been cooking on the salt blocks for years, we usually cook tuna steaks on them and no they surprisingly do not transfer much salt. Keep up the great work my friend.

nice experiment! i've never cooked on a salt block and it is interesting to hear a honest opinion. I personally use them to sprinkle on a cooked dish but also have them on my restaurant kitchen shelf. It is said that it gives out good energy in the environment. Hoping this will help other chefs to be nice to each other.

We purchased a Salt Block like 8 months ago, and still have not even opened it yet. LOL. I guess we should get on that. Rib-eyes looked fantastic. Great marbling. Overall, a great video. The steaks came out awesome.

Thanks Josh & Babe! If you use it, make sure you add some salt. Maybe putting a little olive oil on the steak would help. 👍🏼

Might be interesting to try a thicker cut and use a reverse sear as to give it more time on the block. But like someone previously said the higher the fat content the less the salt will transfer if you have a lean meat a touch of oil will lower the salt transfer.

Hey John, I'd like to put the salt block in the fridge with the meat on it a few hours prior to cooking it. I need to retry this cook soon.👍

I usually marinade the steaks on the salt block first for about 10 min per side then BBQ normally...it let's the salt penetrate just enough. I don't add anything to my steaks any more.

Nice stake. Will the salt block change as time goes on. Will fat and moisture soften the block, allowing it penetrate the meat? I have never cooked on one before. I enjoy your videos keep up the great cooking.

My wife and I just received a gifted salt block, and after watching several videos, I noticed the ones who cut their steak on a separate carving board and not on the block itself have noticed a significant lack of salt in the flavor. I wonder if cutting the steaks fresh off the grill right on the salt block is the best way to transfer the salt to the steak for best results. Anyway, I appreciate your video nonetheless for the helpful info, cheers!

Hello Cody. That might actually work. I was thinking of letting my steaks rest in the fridge for a few hours. Maybe like 4 hours and flip them at the 2 hour mark. Thnaks for watching.👍

Nothing beats family. Well done sir. I assumed rub was always the way to go when grilling. Six months in, I am leaning towards salt and pepper only. Any thoughts?

Me too Lasse. I actually licked the side of the salt block and it was really salty. For some strange reason very little transferred to the meat.

No need for salt, that's what the block is for next time cut the steak on the block, you can have it as salty as you want.

The more fat on the food, the more it repels the salt form the block. the more moisture the food has, the more it absorbs it. I've seen someone scrape their knife back and forth over the salt block for like 5 minutes before throwing the steak on there. What they gave me had plenty of salt flavor. But then again, i don't like a lot of salt on my food. So I don't know.

Salt slab on top of meat gives it a salt taste.

You over cooked the steak. Salt is not fat soluble therefore salt block cooking won’t impart much salt to wagyu beef. Wagyu beef is usually accompanied by some flavorful dips that showcase the flavor of the meat and velvety fat. Grill an onion and you’ll have a beautiful result.
