Cory Bernatt has been running The Sandalman Leathercare, a leather-repair shop in Toronto, since 1982. He shows us how he restores a 70-year-old horsehide jacket by removing the cuffs, waistband, and dried-out sheepskin collar and sewing on new parts. The process involves relining, creating replacements, and reconditioning the jacket.

The added-on black interior looks cheaper, with a less ornate design. The new sleeves have fewer stitches, making it look cheap and no longer craft. Although they wanted contrast, the leather was dark after conditioning which didn't coincide with what they mentioned. (Srry for writing such a long description, these are the other issues I noticed lmaoo)

So glad the Majority of comments agree it looked better before this guy (who is very good at what he does) isn't a designer. Never should have gone with the black color. The lining and original sheep wool color along with the brown cuffs and waist should have been returned to its original condition.

@b0rn_project

Fun fact. The sourcing is so hard for this to match the materials, so I think dude just went with what he had in the warehouse. The lining looks so cheap to me and I think one can find this in every fabrics store, new cuff material is also garbage - they are in stock in all the productions that you can imagine, as all the productions start from t-shirts and hoodies, and this material is used for this kind of stuff, not for outerwear. And even so, it's so thin - there's even a hoodie elastic 10 times better that this. And finally given that, black fur just makes sense, because if he'd found it and put the original color it'd look even shittier then it is now I'm afraid. Anyway, proper L!

I notice everybody complaining about the the collar, cuffs, and liner color, (and I also prefer the original color) but it very well could be that the owner wanted the black. Either way, the guy is a master tailor ? Seamstress ? Bomber jacket rebuilder guy ? I have an A-2 flight jacket made by Cooper, who was one of the original defense contractors in the US making these "bomber" jackets for the military, it's basically the same exact jacket only with a leather collar instead of the sheep's wool.I wish I could find someone like this to do a few minor repairs to it. I won't let just anybody work on it as it was a gift from my father when I graduated from college.
@xassylax

At 2:52 he says “I’ve chosen to modernize this design rather than trying to restore it back to its original form.” That tells me that this was _his_ decision. Now maybe the owner said “do whatever you want to it.” Maybe he himself is the owner. But the point is going with the black instead of the original creamy color was this guys artistic choice. And while the physical restoration was extremely well done, maybe he should leave artistic design choices to those who actually specialize in it.

this is the first thing in this video series that's made out of regular decent quality leather, unlike those ferrari car seats and fashion brand handbags! I'm guessing the reason why horse leather used to be common in 20th century america was that they used to kill huge numbers of wild mustangs. they were dirt cheap and made into pet food and famously into glue and such. they reproduced in the wild at no cost and were then rounded up in bigger herds than any other wild animal.

What a scam! This dude just took all the nostalgia from this beautiful jacket and replaced it with fake materials. And then charged him hundreds of dollars. Nothing a steam clean and a little saddle soap would've fixed.

You can’t steam clean 70 year old disintegrating leather and fabric. There were no fake materials used only leather and sheepskin and the same type of fabric for the liner and trim.

@@corybernatt678 You have no idea what you're talking about. The liner wasn't disintegrated and the trim can be repaired without replacing. I think you like to talk just to hear your own voice and smell your own breath. Do the world a favor and STFU.

Ah cool, so you decided to ruin this jacket's style and history by making all the accents black for no reason. Great way to ruin a jacket. Also claiming it was deteriorating is really inaccurate. Considering its age, the jacket was in amazing condition, it really just needed to be cleaned, conditioned, and have the holes in the cuffs sewn up.
