Thank you for this review. You saved me $30. I was expecting Sci-fi, and a continuous world. Not we wound up getting. Guess I'll be waiting for the next Open world Survival game. Such a great genre and very rarely gets done right.

It's a pretty fun game. I like it. I played rust and I wish rust was like this. It's not a perfect survivor game but I really enjoy the process of the mission. and the crafting and leveling up is fun to learn. I'm pretty picky about these sorts of things but for 30 bucks this game is worth it. They are also adding to it and expanding it. I payed for anthem and that was half of what this game was and I spent 60 bucks. Just saying.

DayZ is good and all but I wish there was more of an objective aspect. The weather, wildlife, firearms… it’s all decently good. I want a game very similar but without zombies and a story. A bit more wildlife wouldn’t hurt. This game seems like it has a lot of potential but I guess we’ll have to wait and see with updates and whatnot

In all fairness, they were pretty open about the fact that this wasn't a 'continuous' survival game. One of the core aspects of this game that makes it unique was always going to be the whole "nothing is permanent" mechanic. You build the bare minimum that you need for you to complete your mission and then leave. If you were expecting something else I don't think that's the developer's fault, in all honesty.

I appreciate the honesty. I've had the same thoughts about this game watching you and other content creators play it. It is interesting to watch but I also recognize that playing it would make me frustrated for the same reasons you've mentioned. That said, I'm a big Valheim lover. If you wanted to go back for the hearth and home update, I personally would love it. There are enough changes to the game to be worth exploring the world again. Anyway, love your videos. Keep it up Z.

I felt otherwise with valheim update. Did 300 some hours and everything in game basically. Then tried it again with hearth and home update.... Was not enough for me to replay it... Not even 20% more items to build. Still love it, but that big update was very lack luster to me especially for being delayed so long.

@@krich106 Sure, but 300 hours has to count for something. I haven't finished everything or put in 300 hours so the game still has that sparkle for me. It has been my favorite game for a whole year though.

Another thing is that if that mission timer runs out, it deletes your character. Like what happens when you have a life and need to take more than a 6-day break midmisson, well kiss goodbye to all of your progress. Not just fail the mission, lose your character completely possibly 100's of hours of XP, there is no reason at all for this to be a thing.

At least i’m not the only one thinking the same. Where’s the terraforming “disaster”? everything else is perfect, but no breathable air? luckily there’s magic oxygen producing rocks that leave you with a constant need to forage, that’s important to a game, right? my biggest gripe is honestly the oxygen dichotomy where you can’t breathe without your suit and a constant supply of oxygen, but the animals, trees, plants, etc are all fine. there’s nothing to explain that, which just feels like the spacesuit/oxide mechanic is added to force you to have what is essentially a second health bar.

The Dev Q&A on their RU-vid page was really interesting. Sounds like vehicles are still coming. I do wish they had called this Early Access, in the Q&A they had philosophical reasons to go straight to 1.0 but I wish they had listened to the players closer in that regard.

My only exposure to this game initially is through your channel, so the game is exactly as I expect that it would be. I was also hoping that the outposts would be a chunk of terrain that would appear on every map, and perhaps be an inconvenient distance away from your goals for the mission, but would be there all the time. That way you still need to craft your temporary bases, but the steel manufacturing centre (for example) could be available if you wanted to hike all the way to it.

Sad thing is that the community talk to them on Discord and we complain about the building thing. They still don't want to do it. My point of view was if I'm returning to the same place and spot my building should be there. If I go to another planet obviously is not there. But if I return to a mission on the same planet I should have the same building even if I spawn at the other side of the map and travel just to find my old spot. But no. Everytime you leave the planet destroys your home. -___-

Yes the game still need some more work on it, when it comes to base building with having to rebuild all each missions does need a change to it they could add a cargo drop with a work bench and other work station or they could add damage bases in the world where you could find the work station, when it comes to the storms i do not hide from the storms myself as I use storm chaser stamina regeneration during a storm , I also think they should the solo talent points that are not part of the other talent points as the solo talent are locked in multiplayer, save having two different characters

To clear up the loadout/workshop portion. You can bring up to 10 items with you. The end line axes are about equal to platinum or titanium tools. The first tool you unlock is better than stone and bone, but not as good as steel. The good thing about the 300+ credit items is that the pickaxe would allow you to mine the higher tier items. Also, you wont be building a base on every mission. For example, the bio-sample mission can be done in 10 minutes if you know the location of each of the bio samples.

Just started playing this, accidently found speedrun for deep vein, so I am doing that one, unlocked the first pickaxe, takes me 12-15minutes to do it naked, and if polar bear spots me, I just unstuck away, never build any base ever, no point building if I lose it in 5minutes and have to do it all over again, don't need food/water/oxygen or anything if I finish mission under 15min

I think its a new sub genre in the survival genre called expeditions. You should only be preparing as much as you really need to, and building a super small base 3x3 max. Get some food for healing and others for buffs (if needed), a bed and campfire and prefab wood walls if you want, experimenting with hedgehogs for fighting bears and polar bears. Ive done all of the forest missions and there we're ones that i under prepared for and ones that we over prepared for. All of them i did without iron weapons ( i had basic station tools with me)

I discovered this game in beta through this channel and I bought it on the strength of that beta. I do agree that it feels early access, and I think the developers made a big mistake calling it a 1.0 release. That said, I very much enjoy the game loop. I only build as much as I need to get a mission completed. Getting up to iron tools takes less than an hour realtime once you have the feats and blueprints, and at least at the difficulty the game has gotten to so far (I'm 5 or 6 missions in) I haven't needed to even bother smelting steel. I played Conan Exiles pretty obsessively, and this game avoids my one big gripe about that game - once I have a base and the tech tree completed I have no inclination to play; those first 10 hours when you're vulnerable and trying to get by are the funnest part of the game.
@habaz7838
@habaz7838 2 года назад
The lore of the game is that this alien planet was tera formed and seeded with Earth critters. The tera forming went wrong because of a substance called "exotics". This poisoned the atmosphere, but flora and fauna was bio-engineered to adapt to it. This is why the player still has to wear an environmental suit (not a space suit). I think the player has to start fresh because the weather is so bad, I'm assuming my base has been wiped away while I was on the station (who knows if that's lore-accurate or not). I love the content, love your channel. I appreciate the honest review and that you provide constructive solutions that'd make the game better for your playstyle. Hopefully the devs hear your message and can incorporate at least some of your suggestions.

I can agree it's still early access and needs a lot of work especially with preformance. also the game is based on risk and reward system which means it's up to you if you want to build a base 35+ times I have not had to as some missions Don't require a base. As for the wildlife ya we need more exotics while the narrator does explain the animals have been genetically modified it does a poor job stating what point of the planets evolution we are in because if it's early mid point that would explain the rarity of exotics and abundance of regulars like boars, buffalo, wolves, bears and why you don't see the other life forms as much like mammoth and tremors. For the livewire mission your going absolutely overkill on it realistically to complete it and have fun you just need a bow, arrows, spear, a pole(thatch or wood your choice) and that's literally it maybe a bed roll if you want to sleep the night.

Absolutely agree man. The whole game is a total contradiction of itself in terms of what is on offer and what they've done over the past few months to gimp the gameplay. Those animals, the supposed AI, it isn't gonna get any better. They feel fake. The animals are the bread and butter of this game and all they are is a detection radius and a fight or flight response. Non threatening creature- RUN AWAY. Predatory animal- ATTACK KILL AT ALL COSTS. Of course bears can climb sheer cliff faces faster than Stalone in Cliffhanger. I even saw one with a Sherpa guide. The whole thing feels cheap, like it was done on the cheap and with little ability to provide the goals of what they were selling as an end game.

I agree with the lack of alien aspects and that it feels like an early access game. There's at least another map I can see based on the mission progression, so me and my friends are trying to rush that. So far, we're having fun with it, but the game bugs are more of the problem for us when it comes to ruining our fun. I did notice that some new animals started showing up the further in the mission list we went, so hopefully we'll be seeing those weird animals in the future. As for vehicles, I can't imagine it in the game's current state as you mentioned, but hopefull we'll be getting a sort of more open version of the current maps we're seeing. It's definitely a problematic start for a game, but I do hope we'll get those things we're promised by the devs in the upcoming dlc's they planned. I'm excited for Dangerous Horizons because it looks like it's going to be a sort of swamp biome with giant bugs.

Hey there, really enjoyed your review and honesty with the game. I just happened to find you playing the first couple of missions and immediately thought this game looks like so much fun and I want to play and build an awesome base... but seeing that basses aren't permanent just killed my desire right away. It really baffled me especially since I watched a video where the creator mentioned that they chose a non procedural game so encourage you to explore the world, but if you have to spend time rebuilding your home base every time, doesn't that go completely against the heart of that desire? Once base building is permanent I will definitely give it a try. On that note I think a world that is permanently affected by you will also provide a way to make vehicles useful. I don't know yet how you go from biome to biome but if I understand correctly this is all just one large map. If the world was persistent then you could clear trees from your starting base to your other bases creating your own "road". However, with the map refreshing every mission then building a road system would be impossible over time. Either way, I will probably check out some of your other videos and see if I can find something that scratches the base building itch that I have right now. Hopefully a patch comes out to fix the world building, but until then, see you space cowboys
@Arez455
@Arez455 2 года назад
building the base is half the fun. There aren't alot of games I can sit and do that. It's almost like world editing but with objectives. You might be suprised. Also it doesn't take long. Get a start up location and start harvesting the resources to build a bigger base. Some missions take a while. I was in one mission were I had to farm for resources. I took a while so it was no speed run. but I built up a house and learned more mechanics and how to craft things and were to go. Got better at hunting and explored the map. I planned out my second objective as well and prepared for it while Iwaited for the harvest. I've never played a survival game like that. It also looks amazing for a 30 dollar game. Its not perfect and it has hicups but so far i'm imprest. Can't say the same for almost any other game currently on the market lol.

Great information, thank you. Lets hope they continue development. My only thought is landing a space ship in a biodome will subject that evironment to potential impurities that would make it fail before the engines cooled. Then, after centuries of sceince, we are using rocks and bows...again. Then, we hunt and kill wildlife, strip the land of trees, fauna, and ore to complete a mission. The problem with terraforming has always been the humans. When I first land, I cannot help but notice a near perfect environment...wait...what am I supposed to do?

I think part of the rhythm of the game is going to be figuring out the minimum you need to complete a specific mission, and how to get to that point as efficiently as possible. Maybe you don't need a full-size base. Maybe you don't need late-game crafting stations. Maybe you can get away with bringing key tools/weapons from the station (once you've unlocked them) and just making enough of a shelter to set spawn and hide from storms. I don't think you're going to need to fully climb the tech tree 35 times (unless you just enjoy doing that, of course). For instance, the second mission is doable with wood/bone items, you don't need to get to metal unless you just want to take the opportunity to grind levels in a relatively safe context.

While I understand what you are saying, the game that was advertised does not look like the game that was in the trailer. It looked like a 1st person Valheim on Alien worlds. Trying to figure out each missions “rhythm” does not sound fun to me. A continuous world does. It’s almost like FPS, like Anthem, that adds challenges into the main game because the game loop is so weak, they have to artificially extent it.
@AnotherJRB

@@ewjiml I agree the trailer seems to have given a mistaken impression on a number of points... (still waiting for the cute alien cat-thing...), but the devs have been emphasizing "session-based" co-op since the beginning and described the wipe-and-restart mechanism as far back as the initial beta weekend, IIRC. Let me preface by saying, I agree with a lot of what you're saying. Here are my thoughts; The main game loop, such that it is, is intended to re-create that feeling you have when you start a new survival game. So, instead of getting to end-game and going, "okay, I'm the god of this world now... guess I should start a new character at level 0", you get to have that "start fresh" feeling, but still be high enough level to craft better items and equipment immediately. The station items also make the starting over a little less grindy the further you progress, without breaking that "start fresh" game loop mechanic. I absolutely agree with the lack of aliens, the somewhat over-the-top punishment on debuffs (boy, they _really_ don't want us living in a cave!), and the lack of a "good" explanation for things like pneumonia. But we sort of hand-wave those bits for "reasons", because it gives us more of a challenge. The devs seem to be very involved with their community and listen carefully to reviews like this, so I expect this game to get "better" over time. Cheers!

Thanks for the heads up review. I was going to get this on the Steam Sale and I although I think Icarus might be an awesome game someday, that day is not today. This gamebreaker is a deal breaker for me until it gets ironed out. This is just awful to release a game in forget Beta, this really is almost Alpha form if that is something they CAN'T...sort out. I'm not puttin' up with that. Let 'em fix it, then I'll consider it again and I hear the maps are extremely monotonous also. No Man's Sky really has delivered on all the promises and much more since release. This Icarus looks a little like different parts of various Far Cry games from what little I've see at this point but maybe the next expansion will fix that bug and more because this can kill a game in it's tracks if not fixed before the hype-train goes full-blown, 'Mass Effect Andromeda' all over it. I have seen it happen.

Very on point 'review'. I'm enjoying the game - but only on mission 2. I can see the starting with nothing getting old very quickly. The only thing that lessens the pain is that you have unlocked more stuff. There are a few too many contrary aspects. We can't breath but animals can, spaceship drop but only have stone tools, normal crops in a oxygen light atmosphere, etc. I think it seems to be a game that had big ideas but ran out of time/money to be the game it wanted to be.

Hear me out, you finish a mission to survey this planet, then you get back to the station, get rewards or level up etc. Then you have to go into cryo sleep for X amount of time, so when you go on the next mission, everything changes. Terrain, environment, weather. You could be there to monitor the “long term” environmental/evolutionary course of the planet, before humans colonize. So every mission could be different, yet your base could be persistent, just weathered over time.

The weird thing is that their other "big" game, Stationeers, uses Unity 3D engine, not Unreal. And developers usually specialize themselves in one of these engines. It's strange to see a studio splitting their resources and knowledge into two different tech stacks, especially since both basically do the same. It's expensive to train existing developers to use a different stack, and one can expect that their productivity on the new stack will be pretty limited for 1-2 years. So I wonder if they hired a completely new team for this game, outsourced the development, or what. I also don't know how do they share parts of their code base between the different games to expedite development; I guess they can't do that when one game is written in C# and the other in C++.

You know who did base building correctly in a survival game? Subnautica. They never forced you to do something, but rather, the game pushes you to the right direction and then leaves you to figure things on your own. Like for instances, most players that plays subnautica will naturally build mini outposts throughout the game as they explore deeper - while many survival game is all about building that 1 mega base. I think if this game went towards the subnautica route, it will really have something going for it. I want to build houses and outposts for a reason and naturally, not because i am forced to start over after every mission.

I agree with everything you said, but I'd also like to add what my partner said about this game. You are coming from a highly advanced society (Earth) And you land with absolutely nothing on you outside your suit. No tools, no weapons, no ability to store food, water and oxygen. In no real life scenario would you willingly do this. Even if the stuff you bring is basic, until you can lean to upgrade it from the resources you come across. In Ark Survival Evolved, this type of beginning makes sense, because your character is kidnapped. But in Icarus, you purposefully journey to this remote location with nothing but the clothes on your back? Really?

the tools are sort of worth it, they have good durability and bonuses, and it repairs automatically every time u launch a new prospect, you can lose these items. except the suit.

You seem to have missed the core premise. The planet was terraformed as an earth like colony. That’s why the wildlife, and plants, are similar to earth. Different missions are to different colonies. Some environments evolved more, or less, than others. It’s also supposed to be a multiplayer cooperative. Like “No Man’s Sky”. It’s not quite there yet, but with enough people playing it, it SHOULD be much more immersive.

Agree with many points. But think many players go into this game with the wrong expectations. It is not meant to build a super large base on every mission. You go in, craft what is needed for the job and get it done. Most missions I craft enough to make a small 2x1 room, put crafting table in, get bow, get maybe tailor station to make leather armor and pack that up when done crafting. You can carry the stations and walls/floors with you so if needed slap it down, sleep, cook, pack up again. Sort of a nomadic playstyle. On the storms yes they are a nuisance sometimes but most of the time you don't need to seek shelter. On later missions they damage you and staying in a dens part of the forest gets really dangerous, but by that time they also add a lot of background storytelling. Storm is coming you can see that a red alert phase is close so either quickly put up shelter or try to hide in a cave. There is one mission with constant storms in part of the map where you have to carefully manage sheltering and making your way through calm parts of the storm which is quite an interesting mechanic. Just playing that creates its own adventurous tale.

@Thoron_of_Neto 2 года назад
Okay, I hear what you're saying, but I just have to ask this question... Why do they give you tiers higher than wood? Why do they give you anything more than primitive longbow and some fur armors and such that you get from killing predators? The game isn't set up the way you're claiming here, but your playstyle seems to be encouraged by the actual missions. This game seems like it is designed to draw in all kinds of people, and then only reward one type of game play style
@DennisRyu
@DennisRyu 2 года назад
@@Thoron_of_Neto you need higher tier stuff in later missions. The ice biome for example has storms that completely destroy wood constructions in seconds. So you need to build stone shelter to survive. Higher tier ores need better pickaxes to even mine them and you need the ores to build the top tier tech which then give you exotic ores that is a currency you use at the station to get better equipment that you can keep between missions. But yeah the game lacks a lot of balance and has a lot of bugs that need ironing out. So would not call that a full release yet. Also whish it was not completely roguelike, just using that playstyle cause game promotes it that way. But I would love to take stuff like crafting stations back to the space station to use it on the next mission. Think the devs overdid it with the roguelike aspect. But game is still fun to play if you accept the nomadic playstyle.
@Thoron_of_Neto
@Thoron_of_Neto 2 года назад
@@DennisRyu yeah, I feel like the devs made this game in such a way that it draws in people from all over the survival genre, and then pulls a swap, and makes it a roguelike speed runner, leaving those of us looking for a twist on the survival aspect feeling lost because the mechanics are contradictory... I'd prefer it if they'd set it up where you took a prospect, to mine, and any materials you harvest have a (probably tiny) value to other prospectors. I mean,, the term prospect implies there's going to be mining involved, but anything you mine, except exotics gets left behind. I'd like it if while you're on the planet, occasionally missions come in that you can complete for money, or you can spend all your time building in a base, and mining aluminum or titanium to sell back at the station. The concept that these things are so worthless that you can't even bring them back up from the planet to sell or craft more advanced gear before the drop is such a bizarre choice for me. The game has loads of potential, but it feels like it's designed for a different type of player than it's marketed toward lol.
@DennisRyu
@DennisRyu 2 года назад
@@Thoron_of_Neto Well I try to be positive about the game cause I see a lot of potential with it. The mechanics are interesting cause they make you think about what you do and present a challenge. Controls (apart from the clunky building) feel good and way better then plenty other games. And in the end being constructive is way better then all those people raging on the steam forum about every little thing they think is bad. So I try to play the game as it currently is intended to be played and actually have a blast doing that. Trying to figure out the right tools for the mission and optimizing time is a lot of fun. Weather and debuff mechanics give an interesting edge that you have to factor in. Yeah there are some issues like a polar bear spawning on your head but well it was just released and seen AAA titles that were a hundred times messier then this. Also the devs seem to be very active and responsive. They know and admitted that the release was not really smooth and are trying to do better. What people forget here is that game developing is still quite a lot of work. They were monitoring everything the whole weekend long and stepped in when for example the server crashed in a very short time. How many other developers have you seen that sacrifice their whole weekend? So yeah I have hopes that the game gets better. Until then having fun with it exploring what it has to offer.

@@DennisRyu oh, please don't take this as me just raging, I believe there is a PHENOMENAL game here, it has all the workings of something I can sink thousands of hours into! I just think there's a disconnect between the prospect timer, and the mission. Give me an onslaught of missions and 7 days to build myself up, and make me play until the very last minute of the drop timer, then pay me for the missions, and I'll happily restart! As the guy that gets pigeon holed into base building for my team though, they're out doing things and having fun, while all I'm good for, is building up the base, and their levels are so much higher than mine that they can utilize the workbenches so much better than I can, that I feel like a base building character is useless with the way the game is built right now, but the blueprint/talent points are doled out so sparingly, that my only option is to start another character for combat, and with my teammates being 20+ in level, already, my level 5 character still feels useless as well, and I'm the only one stuck swapping characters every time we do a drop, and we keep doing drops every few hours. I don't want this game to grind the fun out of me, and they're having a blast, but like I've said, I feel like this game is (in its current state) drawing in people from all over the survival genre, and only rewarding a few types of playstyle... I hope things change in the future though, but knowing my friends, by the time the game is fun for me, they'll be bored with it lol

Coming into the game with no expectations or having seen the trailers it makes sense to me that a Terriforming project gone wrong would be seeded with known life and possibly mutations between them. I really didn't think of it as an alien world until I came across the worms which reminded me I'm not on earth. My gripe is the game doesn't level scale to the number of players. Boss battles are way too difficult for Solo play and way too easy with 3+ players. Vehicles will be introduced for biomes that support them later in development so with that said, I do agree the game is totally early-access still, not a 1.0...

100% honest review and agree in every aspect. The answer on the missing Sci Fi aspects was explained on their discord as they are planning expansions where other parts of the planet that are alien are accessible. I don't like the answer but it is what it is. Expansions which will be late 2022 / 2023 are actually shown on the supporter edition that is $100, which is too rich for a regular gamer like myself.
