What not to do to your Predator 301 or any small engine.

In this video I describe my engine failure due to running too much advance timing combined with too much oil in the engine.
If you are running a gx 270, gx 390, or predator 301 they run more initial advance. So you should not use more then a 4 degree advance key!

I run 20w50 synthetic in all of my small engines. St.Louis, Mo. weather and I don't run anything in the very cold winter months. This oil has worked best for me for years, for my climate.

I don't think it was the timing at all. First, you used too much oil. Then you disabled the governor and used the stock rod. They say that the stock rod can handle 6k rpm but I wouldn't trust it. And when you remove the low oil sensor, there is no need to put the bolts for it back in the block. You are asking for trouble by doing that.

Ignition timing one of the big contributing factors to adding it is how big the bore is.... so with that being bigger than a 212 you should be able to run the same or more you would just probably need to keep Cooling in mind.
@BlackWarriorLures
@BlackWarriorLures 7 лет назад
Does ARC make an extra long 270 rod? I was wondering since they make these rods in so many different lengths compared to a stock rod , they might be able to speck something for you, especially with the different sized bearings they offer. Perhaps a 270 rod at +.040 length might have fit, but I don't know. If you're running well now I guess it's all in the past. Run well. These are really good kits.

Hi Rumnhammer! I know this is an old video but I don't think this was your fault my friend. The timing being a bit high wouldn't cause the oiling failure issue. The problem was also not likely that you overfilled the oil. More than likely your carb failed you and leaked raw fuel into the engine oil. This thinned out the oil and increased the volume of oil in the crankcase. The thinned conventional oil could not lubricate the engine and that's where the heat came from and the failed rod bearing issue. All and all it's more than likely a case of bad luck with the carburetor, not your fault IMO.

An awful lot of crap being said in this one boys! When you go through such a lengthy, well-planned out video such as this one just to make himself feel better about blowing your engine up by adding too much oil, says everything! I built several 270s and 301s from stock to pretty heavily modified and timing has never been an issue no matter what combination I've ran but I can tell you right now and I'm not ashamed to admit it, oil level has! They're so much misinformation given by the op and it's everywhere in the comments too! I really wish he would own up to the mistake he made, posted a video based on that and all would have been wonderful but we obviously didn't get that.
@Rumnhammer

I don't know how plain I have to say it but the main reason this engine went south is because it had too much oil in it.......the timing was secondary. If you couldn't get that from the video then I guess you are the type that has have a picture drawn. I really did mention it and "owned up to it" But say what you feel if it makes you feel better I don't really care.

Higher cylinder pressure = higher bearing load, combined with extra heat and foaming oil = less lubrication to the bearings, spelled doom for your engine. Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, I run AMSOIL 10W30 Z-Rod oil lots of zinc for tehse flat tappet lifters, the anti corrosion/rust inhibitor package from their marine oil, and it's synthetic.
@Rumnhammer

Running 10w30 mobil 1 in the new engine, after I broke it in with driven BR 30 break in oil. I probably should have added to the video that the reason I had too much oil in was because I checked the level when the trailer was on a slope so the oil had all gone to the other side and made it look like it was way low, so I had about 1/2 quart too much in there. Lesson learned if there is any chance of this happening now I check both sides dipsticks, and I also left the low oil shut off in the new engine as well so worst case if I actually am low the engine just won't start.
@BlackWarriorLures
@BlackWarriorLures 7 лет назад
Oh, wow, 1/2 a quart would be way too much. I know with the oil sensor, we'd always add a couple ounces more, but, yeah, 1/2 quart would be like mega death. Oh, so, you already have the motor built and all.

I have a problem after taking mines apart and removing the governer I got oil in the exhaust when I checked it this morning it was so hard to turn over piston sounded like a plunger so I figured I flooded it so I too the spark plug out and filled the head with gasoline to dry up some of the oil I turned the motor over a few times watched it spit but now it will only crank with starter fluid and only for a few seconds at that any suggestions?

Where did you get your advance timing keys ?
@heavyduty1001
@heavyduty1001 7 лет назад
if it detonated that bad then why are there no signs of it? timing had nothing to do with it, now adding all the extra oil killed it. the rod was beating the oil and foaming it up and the motor didn't oil correctly and starved the rod for oil, hence the ate up rod and crank but no signs of detonation damage.
@Rumnhammer
@Rumnhammer 7 лет назад
The advanced timing ~9degrees of advance didn't kill it by detonation, it helped to kill it by all the extra heat it put into the engine. When I talked to ARC that is the answer they gave me. Since the 301 already runs 3 degrees of advance using a 6 degree key makes it run hotter especially if it is stationary. So this time on the new engine I'm sticking to the stock key. The extra timing is not worth it on this engine.
@heavyduty1001
@heavyduty1001 7 лет назад
Rumnhammer too much oil = foaming which = bad/improper/not oiling... that means RIP predator 301.... lol granted it may have been running warm, but the crank and rod clearly show lack of lubrication.
@alltheboost5363
@alltheboost5363 6 лет назад
I completely agree with what you said this had nothing to do with how the engine was set up other than the fact that you put too much oil in it. I see no signs of detonation at all. If you can show us some marks on top of the Piston from detonation or in the combustion chamber then I might believe it but when you said there was that much oil coming out of it that's what killed it. And the proof is sitting right in front of you with a dead bearing.
@alltheboost5363
@alltheboost5363 6 лет назад
Always use synthetic in an air-cooled engine... except for maybe the break in process. It probably would have kept this engine from dying at least that fast.

You can clean up that drive shaft and piston boot with Emory cloth and replace the Piston bearings with new ones and that motor will be fine after you re-set the timing. Just use some good oil in it next time too.

FWIW I think only the valve springs etc are different. I know the flywheel is the same for both. Carb is the same, and exhaust is the same.

@Rumnhammer

no unfortunately ARC doesn't make one for the 301, yet anyway if they did I would. They are much nicer and include an additional hole through the oil flinger that leads to the journal bearing.
@BlackWarriorLures

Okay, I didn't that ARC didn't make one. Yeah I'm running the ARC Rod in my little 212. Hey, Don;t know what your plans are for this motor but I found a company that sells 390 clones for like $160. I'm not affiliated with them in any way, but these motors are all the buzz over on the mudmotorkitforums: www.powerlanddepot.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=39&product_id=64 Lot of good guys over there. Since you own a Swamp Runner you can get access to the Shade Tree section of the forum where we talk about hopping up these motors.

@Rumnhammer

It is the little woodruff key that goes on the flywheel side of the the driveshaft. it locks the flywheel on and by having a little slice out of it moves the position of the magnet changing the timing.

The too-much-oil theory: wouldn't the slinger be perfect for whipping the oil into a froth, if that were going to happen, at the best of times. That's why this theory doesn't make sense to me. Edit: wait, does this engine have no oil-slinger?

What the hell is piston bearings? This is what really gets my blood boiling. Spreading misinformation to someone looking for help or someone new to the Hobby or whatever leads to someone having catastrophic failure on whatever they're working on. They trusted a platform to post a question on and sadly trusted the answer given by someone that has no idea what they're talking about. I'm not being mean I'm just simply stating facts. Especially when dealing with the small engines modified or not it's comical to read through the comments and sometimes I scroll through the comments just for that very reason. With all this being said it also makes you look.,...well you know....

You don't seem that confident that it got too hot, that it was the "wrong" oil weight or type, that had too much oil, or that it had too much timing. How did you conclude it was all those things that caused the rod to pile-up and not that you degoverned a stock engine and ran it at sustained high RPM and high load in a boat?
@Rumnhammer
@Rumnhammer 6 лет назад
probably because it was red hot and had oil vapor coming out of the breather. This also happened at idle in my driveway not when under load.

@Deucealive75

Um...You do know that once hot 5W30 and 10W30 are the same right? Both oils are rated as 30wt oils when at normal HOT operating temperature. So, they are equivalent where an engine spends 99% of its life.
@Rumnhammer
@Rumnhammer 4 года назад
Yeah I know that , doesn't matter what the weight of the oil is if you put too much in which is what happened here. when you check the oil on the uphill side when the engine is not level and add oil to it having too much in is just as bad as not enough.
