Get a slow cooker/instant pot. Something that can cook your food while you are at work is a HUGE thing. Coming home tired and hungry to a house that smells like dinner is a moral boost that prevents expensive junk food.

this is a smart idea, but I'd honestly be too scared to come home and seeing 2 firetrucks sending tons of water into my flaming apartment 😂

Story 21: The higher the floor, the harder it is to go down during a natural disaster, such as earthquakes or fire. So I opted for the floor in the middle. On any type of floor, always secure your belongings, and if able, have a safe attached to a wall or the floor. Thieves can be your neighbors (and roommates) too. And don't tell just about anyone what you own or what you keep in your apartment. This may be overheard or accidentally be said to an outsider. Story 42: "Your place, your rules". Yeah I learned this too late. I was being judged by what I buy and don't buy even if I own my space, and can't get stuff replaced or added because roommate kept on judging me. I live alone now.

Second hand furniture is a good idea, BUT with the caveat to be careful about upholstered things like couches mattresses and fabric chairs. That’s an easy way to bring things like bed bugs, mice, and mold into your house without knowing. Don’t take upholstered things off the street. Second hand shops maybe but do a careful inspection first.

I think this might vary state to state (US), on thrift shops, anyway. Iirc MA has some kind of law that all upholstered furniture has to be steam cleaned before it can be sold, or something like that. I could be wrong, but I remember some kind of tag like that on couches there years ago…

@@stuffedninja1337That's good to know- so addendum: Look at your local regulations and still don't pick upholstered stuff up off the street lol

Don't think anyone mentioned, but INVENTORY and organize your things! Thieves are less likely to steal if they see how clean and organized you are.

I may catch flack for this but hear me out. Do no move in with another autistic unless you're 100 percent sure your boundaries aren't going to cross each other. I'm autistic and personally need certain spaces in an exact way so I don't have an anxiety issue. Especially the kitchen. Food sanitation is a huge thing for me. Talk extensively with whoever you move in with just to make sure it's not going to cause an overtimulation. I didn't do that and caused myself so much stress. I couldn't sleep. I couldn't eat. I'm having a hard time explaining this.

@SilverMoon-qx5hn I think you explained it very well! I come from a family with many ppl with ASD or ADD so I understand what you're saying. Do you have an idea about the kind of person you could live with? Maybe someone who works/helps with ppl with ASD?

The internet is your friend, esp in this day and age. Lots of creators who are ASD sharing their experiences & wisdom. Social Services may also be helpful. Depending on where you live you may be able to get a Social Worker who can help guide you to independence. My oldest daughter is ASD & she's about to graduate from a demanding performance arts university & looking to get a job & move out of her father's place. She has support in the form of therapists & a psychiatrist. If it's something important to you it can't hurt to look & see what might be possible. Good luck & I believe in you!!!

How to cook all kinds of raw meat if you d eat meat. Learning the proper temperatures for them and what you should cook them in is essential not only for tasty meals but so you don't get sick. Cooking meat bone in vs no bone is really different. Also air fryers are your bff

Buy second hand stuff Furniture, kitchen wear, electronics check your local thrift stores, market place, yard sales or even ask someone if they're getting rid of something. A good deep cleaning and it's good as new while saving yourself some cash.

Be aware of what resources are available to you to help you save money, if you need them. Food stamps certainly helped me when I moved out the first time. In addition, having a good stock of food staples (pasta and sauce, milk, cereal, bread, peanut butter, etc) is more important than you might realise. Nothing sucks worse than being broke and hungry. (Also also, be choosy about your groceries, but more in which kind you get. I stick to the mini meatball and sausage flavours of prego sauce, because it’s the same price but extra protein!) ETA: Stalk the clearance racks at stores! I’ve gotten great quality soap, name brand food, new clothes, all sorts of stuff because the box was mashed, the scent/colour/flavour wasn’t popular, etc. Have like, 3-5 recipes you can make in your sleep, and make sure they’re both healthy and tasty. Get your oil changed on time for your car. Don’t cheap out on windshield wipers. If your state requires car insurance but you’re broke, just get liability unless you have a REALLY nice car or live in a high crime neighbourhood. Liquid starch can be used to adhere fabric to walls like wallpaper, and it comes off with warm water without damaging walls (never tried this personally, though, so use at your own risk). Mod podge + fabric can be used to customise furniture on the cheap and easy. Take advantage of free newspapers you see at the grocery store to keep aware of current events in your area (we have like, 5 in my area alone). Costco will never charge more than $26 for any prescription, even for non-members. (This may have gone up slightly due to inflation, but my ex and I got two scripts in 2018 for less than $20, when it’d have been $200 elsewhere.) If you have a computer, Steam has tons of free or low-cost games that can work even on older systems. Get some designated towels for in front of the shower or bath. Make sure to have a simple toolbox. Throw blankets are lovely and can help immensely for comfort, in the cold, or if someone needs to crash at your place.

Not all landlords are parasites who try to screw you over. Some are actually great. Mine hasn't raised my rent once even though they legally could do it yearly.

So many of these I knew before college... The rest (mostly roommate related) during college... Don't trust a bad roommate was always tough for me - ie don't even trust them not to tape a torn up check back together and use it to take you for $$$s months after they left - and didn't pay their repair costs or last months rent. If they can't pay the sec dep and rent up front - just nope them out and save headaches later NO MATTER WHAT!

Dude nobody told me how to live on my own. It took me 4 years before I realized theft was literally illegal. I was brought up to believe that if it exists, it's yours if you can take it To this day nearly 30 years later, those lessons are still deeply ingrained. I don't feel guilt or remorse for theft or killing or anything. If it doesn't benefit me, it's not worth doing. That's my life. That's how I learned.
