This is by far my favorite rendition. To me this is the way the national anthem was supposed to sound and it’s amazing. Dare I say it might be one of the absolute best pieces ever composed. Huge shout out to John Clayton for re-harmonizing it! John never gets enough credit

I appreciate your kind words for Whitney young man. She didn't over do it. You should give her singing America the Beautiful a listen. I definitely appreciate you addressing disrespect for artists on your channel & I agree there isn't a need for that. May God bless you.

It was Super bowl XXV (25) in 1991. I was living in Germany at the time because my then husband was in the military. When the game aired, he was deployed to the Persian Gulf War. All of the spouses & kids living on the military base & those soldiers who stayed behind organized a community watch party with a big BBQ potluck. I'll never forget when Whitney started singing, everyone was standing either saluting or hand over heart in complete silence. As she sang, more & more people started sniffling & wiping their eyes because we were all feeling the patriotism & the collective hope that all of our husbands & wives serving in the war would come home alive & safe. When she finished, everyone was in shocked awe but soon erupted into thunderous applause (like the people in the stadium). I would say for a week after the game people were still commenting on Whitney's performance.... She released it as a single & then released it again after 9/11 attacks, donating all proceeds to charity. I saw her give an interview once shortly after she hit it big on the music scene. I can't remember who was interviewing her, it may have been one of the hosts of MTV or maybe it was VH1 (back in the day when those channels were all about music & not reality shows). I think it was around early 1986. During the interview she mentioned watching Marvin Gaye sing the anthem at an NBA All Star Game (1983) & loved how he put his own signature spin to the song, giving it a soulful jazzy-blues twist. I never saw that because I was living overseas as my dad (US Army soldier) was stationed in Seoul, Korea for my 9th & 10th grade of high school. i did see Marvin's performance many years later & it was my favorite rendition until Whitney's performance in 1991. She's my top favorite, Marvin is #2, and finally the iconic Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock, with his electric guitar version, which sparked a ton of controversy. This was back in 1969 & any deviations from the traditional anthem were unheard of. Lots of folks thought he was being disrespectful which was far from the truth. He was anti-war, but he wasn't anti-American as some people accused him of being. Many didn't realize that he even served in the US Army, as part of the 101st Airborne Division.

Hi MMB, I still remember hearing this sung at the opening of the game. Normally hearing the Anthem was secondary to the actual game. Not the biggest deal. And then I was totally blown away. And as a 1970's rocker, I was not normally a "Whitney Fan". She won me over, totally owned me, and everyone else lisening. She was more powerful then the jets flying overhead! And aside from how great her voice was, the musical choices she made were new. The way she went high with "freeee", and then low at the final "brave", sent chills up my spine. Almost everyone does some version of that Whitney structure now. ---- By the way, a constant theme when listening to great music is "Is this (singer/guitarist/drummer/bassist/band) the BEST EVER?" It's sort of a way that we listeners can torture ourselves. The fact is, ALL these performances are GREAT. I don't really need to ask who is better,,, Whitney's vocal skill or Bobby Hatfield's skill???, but I still can't help asking that question. And how do those two singers compare to the vocals of a rocker like Ian Gillan? Or the blues-rock vocals of Janis Joplin or Joe Cocker? Each is best in a different way. That question is part of the fun when reacting to music. It's an enjoyable way to inspire and tourture ourselves. The main thing is, thank God for all this great talent! And thank God that we get to see these performances on video any time we want. And one more time, thanks again MMB for your great MOB! -Jeremy

I felt like Dolly did it her way. And it was great. Whitney took that song to another level "I will always love you". So I don't appreciate any disrespect for Whitney. She has one of the best voices ever. And there will never be another Whitney Houston. Boo on any Haters.

Frank Gifford announced her onto the field that year , he said it was the most electric moment In sports that he can remember. That's a good compliment coming from him. Whitney wanted it slow , until she unleashed her booming voice to the heavens . We miss her ❤

So many criticize Whitney's performance here because it was pre-recorded and lip synced. Who gives a damn!? It was done beautifully. Chris may not have topped this but he is right up top with Whitney.

@@leroyrs I saw an interview with the man who produced this version and he said that she did not lip sync . Watch her sing one moment in time live at the grammy s. There is no need for her ro lip such anything. She was a beautiful soul, but very vulnerable to bad elements around her. Her mother said that when she was born that the Lord told her that she would not have her for long. Her impact will live on.

What a lot of folks don’t know is that from 93’ on EVERY artist pre-records the anthem. It’s required, so there are no mistakes. It’s their voice, but it’s been pre-recorded. Legend has it Whitney did it in one take. I’m not hacking on Chris, his voice is amazing but his lip syncing skills were not great. You’ll notice they pan away from him for most of his performance and show the crowd. He’s a monster live performer, but lip syncing just isn’t his skill set.

No she didn't
@Prozak63
@Prozak63 Год назад
@Michele Elzubeir she absolutely did. Research it before you make that statement. And watch the video closely, the band was even having fun pretending. It was her voice and was fabulous. It was simply prerecorded. The NFL stopped taking chances on any sort of malfunction as it would affect the whole production and possibly cause delays.

Disrespectful of Whitney Houston? A-holes abound. She was a miracle. Dolly Parton wrote the song and she was thrilled by Whitney’s performance. She made a fortune off this song.
