Why Colour Accuracy is EVERYTHING! How I make my G9 & A7iii Look IDENTICAL for Video!!

Everyone's always going on about cameras having a certain "look".. but really what they mean is an artistic representation on what is real when it comes to actual accurate colour.
I use HLG on my A7iii and Panasonic Lumix G9 and by using the correct settings and exposure methods to maximise dynamic range, then I can convert them using LEEMING colour LUTs to accurate REC709 colour space and then grade to make them making them near identical.

I’m just after updating my G9 with V-Log L (a snip at £83), which is the most random and complicated procedure ever, but I already did that with my GH5 so this way I will get matching - out of Camera - footage!

Connor Dunne so I just filmed the same 40 sec clip on GH5 then, straight after, on the G9 (with the same lens) and I can see no discernible difference in the V-log L from camera , then adjusted the Luma 0-100 IRE and applied the V-Log to rec 709 LUT and exported to desktop as a ProRes 422 file then played on VLC and no difference . . . Which is what you would hope for really!

I also have the Leeming luts although I find the results can be quite dark without using the Quickies with V LOG L :)

I thought it was dark at first. Once I got my exposure to the 90/95% on my zebras then the LUT brings it back to safety(a little dark) and allows your to manipulate it without damaging the footage. So you can push and pull there after 🤗 before I wasn't aggressively exposing and was left with very dark footage

@@CreativeConnor Ah see I have my zebras set at 75% I think it is for V LOG L and I haven't tried HLG I don't think. Do you apply the Leeming Lut straight to your HLG footage?

Straight to the HLG file. I'll make a quick video about it for you. A few others on here want to see it cause they're a little confused 🤓 hold tight. HLG or VlogL the steps are the same 📸

Thanks for the video. It was very informative! Are there any benefits of using the Leeming LUT on a Panasonic G9 if I only have one camera and matching video isn't a concern?

Hey João! I would recommend it even if you're only using one camera! It will get your G9 to the most accurate colours. But if you're enjoying your image already then don't feel you need to 😎

I have the leeming luts for my G85 and X-T3. It seems a bit harder to make them match because the G85 doesn't have log nor can you adjust HLG on it. But I posted my issues in the facebook group and the creator of the lut took the time to work out some issues I was having. Edit: do you do White Balance in camera or in your NLE?

Always and forever white balance in the camera with a grey or white card. Like I use in video. Inside I'm generally at 5500k with the lights I use and then outside depends on the sun really. I know what you're saying about the G85. It'll be hard to get that camera to a colour accurate state without a LOG profile. Really the most important thing you can do is have the profile set up in camera the way the LEEMING LUT explains. Think it's -3 sharpness -3 saturation on the profile you're using and then get your white balance done right in camera at the time. If you try balance it in your NLE it won't work well and you'll get pretty ugly results.

I'll do a video on it. But settings are dependent on using the Leeming LUT specifically to achieve correct colour accuracy in the REC709 colour space. So setting it up the same as mine won't yield the same results unless you're using those LUTs Malik 😄
