From my experience here as a foreigner in Tokyo, "busy" is just their way of saying I'm not interested. I've dated career women who were directors or in senior management at big companies. If they could make time for me, then anyone can. I'm aware some work until the middle of the night. But why try to date anyone doing that? Some guys I'm afraid think they will make time for them but it's just a waste of time. Then when they are free, their friends or dog usually take priority 😅 Anyway, my 2 yen.

Work ethic is extremely important in Japan from my impressions too and i've heard they rarely take vacation time so I imagine that does have an impact. Honestly it's kinda hard in America too, we work work work work and don't have much time for dating, weekends we are still recovering from work week and just trying to get things done before the next week starts over and want some time to alone to relax and recover also. At least that's how i feel at my age, maybe younger people still have plenty of energy after work and on weekends and less responsibilities. Also these days I don't even understand how your supposed to meet women as a guy, because all we got these days is stupid apps where we could message 100 women and maybe get 1 reply but those replies never actually lead to anything.

They really are too busy because of the work culture here. People say “Japanese people work hard” but it’s not exactly true. What they mean to say is “Japanese people work long”. They don’t work harder than westerners, but they work less efficiently. They are good at making manufacturing processes and material usage efficient because this is necessitated by a lack of space, but they are horrible in the efficiency of the utilization/application of human labor, speed of organization and decision, and critical thinking to get work done quickly. They also have an extremely toxic work culture of “more time = harder work”. I know a high school teacher who sometimes stays at the high school until 2 am or even 4 or 5 am. This is completely bonkers and unacceptable. No work whatsoever could take so long. I have made shipping arrangements with the Japanese and with other countries and I can tell you that it takes 4-5 times longer with Japanese companies. This is because they worry about things like “ ‘Japan’ is in your company name but it’s usually spelled on docs with katakana but this time it is spelled on a doc with the alphabet. Why? Did something happen? Please change it to the katakana version and send it back.” And “we need you to sign the POA for the shipping but oh no we need you le stamp and the signature too, well maybe we need two stamps and the signature”… and so on all this kind of stuff is a nightmare to deal with. Some of them do commute like that because just everything HAS to be in Tokyo. It’s like if Hollywood and Silicon Valley were also in NYC, so people are leaving the countryside for Tokyo and cities like Kyoto are going bankrupt. The other thing is, Japanese women are too materialistic and selfish. It’s very bad here. They are way overrated.

Think about it. There are only 24 hours in a day. You, ideally, sleep for 8. You wake up and go to work for 8 hours. Depending on your commute it could be 5 minutes to get to work, 10 minutes round trip. Or it could be an hour and fifteen minutes or more (2 1/2+ hours round trip). That means getting to work, working, and then getting back from work is 8-10 hours of someone's walking hours. This leaves just 6 hours to rest at home, cook dinner, pick up the kids, and prepare for the next day. These are after work hours when people are tired. When are people supposed to slot in dating during the work week? And this is assuming their job pays well. If it doesn't, they'll take on another job or other money generating side-task in the "free" hours. In big cities the cost of living makes it so many spend 50% of their income paying for their apartment. Most people ARE too busy to date, and too stressed to really engage with random passersby.

Well some Japanese go the extent of 10 hours a day, (unpaid overtime estimated within) And unlike Americans Japan get's a 1 day weekend for many companies So 60 hours is pretty accurate giver or take.

However, I think making such broad statements about women is not ever really a good thing to do. It implies that all Japanese women are materialistic and selfish. But what age group? What kind of upbringing? What's their background? Sense of values? I could very well make that statement based on my observation about Korean women, or Californian women, or Canadian women but I wouldn't because it's impossible to generalize so broadly. Sure, the percentage may be higher. But overrated? How? Based on what expectation? How do you overrate an entire ethnic group? I can't imagine labeling an entire culture like that, frankly. Companies? Sure, but companies are not people. They're processes, hierarchies, systems. People change and are more transient than that.

Probably more expats would ask her out then Japanese guys. Her body type is not ideal for Japanese guys who prefer a more slim physique. It's just the reality in Japan.

Well soon i understood that it is not because she didn't like me but its because their culture. I have never asked her if she wanted to be my girlfriend so for her i was still a gentleman stranger.
