Why do Katniss and Peeta have children? 

Hi friends! A quick reminder not to post spoilers for "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes". The book isn't out in many countries yet, and won't be for another few weeks, so it's incredibly inconsiderate. Also, many of you have been asking when I'll make videos about it. I won't be making videos about it until the movie adaptation is released, as this firstly gives everyone time to buy and read the book, and secondly will allow us to use the secondary canon that is a movie to base ideas off of. Imagine your kids calling your old mentor “Uncle Haymitch”

People forget how maternal she is throughout the series. She’s basically a mom to her sister Prim, takes care of Rue, has a soft spot for the weaker people like Wiress and Mags, etc. She didn’t want kids not because of lack of desire for them, she was afraid of what the HG could do to get family. Once the war was over and she had time to heal, it was obvious that she’s agreed to Peeta’s “request”. I’m sure that he wouldn’t nag her until she said yes. Heck, he’s the only one in the series who never asks anything of her. Not even her love. Why would he go around asking for babies?

Honestly I don’t think Katniss would name her children after dead friends or family if I’m being honest, as she has PTSD from what she has been through and hearing their names again may give her unpleasant flashbacks of their deaths. I feel like she might name a child after her mother, and Peeta after his father.

Katniss and Peeta having kids was symbolic in so many ways. In Catching Fire Katniss dreams of a 'world, with no games, no Capitol. A place like the meadow she sang of to Rue. Where Peeta's child could be safe' So in the epilogue her watching as thier children peacefully play in a meadow, innocent of the graveyard that lies below them and unaware of games that still haunt her nightmares, it was extremely poignant. It brought things full circle and symbolizes hope but its tempered with reality because she will never fully recover from her trauma. Neither will Peeta. It's a bittersweet ending that gives us a far deeper meaning than a simple 'happy ever after'

I kinda like that she has children. I think that it's almost a last streak of rebellion to the capitol she grew up with: She was afraid of having children because of the games, and now she has children despite them. I don't really know if that makes sense but yeah

There are lots of comments about the child’s name being Finnick, but I don't think so because I think Annie would of named her son that☺️

It was actually confirmed by Susan Collins that the names of the children are willow and rye Really sticking with the theme Katniss-named after a plant Peeta-named after bread Willow-named after a plant Rye-named after bread See the pattern?

The girl: Prim, Rue or maybe Mags The boy: Finnick, Thresh or Cinna

They have children because Katniss finally feels that the world is safe for her family to grow up in. The scene is when they were older, 15 years older, it just seems like it happened so fast in the movie due to it flashing forward.

Even though it's a popular fan theory, I think Willow for a girl is a great logical choice. Because it honors both Prim and Rue without actually naming the child after them. Also Pearl is a good name for a girl. Maybe Hunter or Forrest for a boy. Or something to do with baking. Like Graham or Barley or Rye. :)

I think the kids are named after people they knew that died, maybe Finnick and Rue?

It’s simple, Katniss says in the Epilogue “... but Peeta wanted them so badly.”

I adore the epilogue because it’s a callback to her happy dream in Catching Fire when she normally only had nightmares. She sees Peeta in the meadow with his child in a world with no more hunger games. I love this foreshadowing because at the time she didn’t think this could be a life for her, she was prepared to die in the Quarter Quell. But no… she gets to be a part of that future as well and enjoy it with him by her side. Katniss was always softer when she was around Peeta, he brings balance and stability, which she has always loved about him. It’s really beautiful to me that they get to live out their days in peace together and I’m glad she found happiness after all the horrible things she has been through.

I didn’t come up with this story but it relates to the topic so imma retell it! When Katniss’s daughter was older she was playing in the attic and found an old box with clothes in it. One was Prim’s old blouse from the reaping. The girl put it on and ran down stairs to show her mother. Katniss was it and realized that the back was sticking out like a tail. “It looks beautiful, but tuck in your tail little duck,” Katniss said through tears This isn’t a confirmed story but I really like it

I read a whole article on this. It is 80% sure that they named them completely new names, to not be reminded of the past. I hoped they did name one them after Prim or another male close to their heart- but I think they named them Willow and Rye for a fresh new start.

I feel like she wouldn’t name her children after dead people but more natural names. Maybe wren and reed

My question is if Katniss and Peeta’s kids ever got to meet other people besides Haymitch.

She mostly never wanted to have children because of the hunger games.

I really enjoy the idea of Katniss & Peeta's ending. It seems out of character for Katniss, but it makes sense. Now that the Hunger Games are permanently deceased, she doesn't have to fear for her children being reaped. She looks very happy & calm. It must've felt so different for them to live without the fear of the capital torturing them.

i think katniss was always a motherly figure (rue and prim) but needed a different world to become an actual mother. even after the war i think she was hesitant because of her trauma, but she probably felt like she owed it to peeta to have kids. but under that explanation, she probably really needed closure after all that happened with prim and the games

In a couple you don't make the decision yourself but as a couple. It's impossible to imagine Peeta not having children, he looks like a born dad and time also has passed.

i think they had children because there were no games in the first movie katniss said she would never have kids because of the conditions she had lived in and she didnt want somebody she unconditionally loved to go through that

I can't believe children have been reduced to an annoyance now days. So much so that some people miss the whole point of Katniss having children despite everything.

Many people criticize the ending but i think it was so perfect... It shows that having hope is possible, and that Panem is finally healing. Katniss loves caring for people, you can totally see that, she doesn't want children because of this dangerous world she lives in but if she was no mother material, she would never had cared so much for Prim, and for Rue. She had to not show too much her feelings, she had to not have children, it was a matter of survival. I think many also criticize that Peeta forced her into having kids, but this is also a lie, i think Peeta just gave her hope to move on and channel her fears, to get over all the tragedy, and getting over the fear meant having hope, that came with the kids. Honestly i would never change anything from this series, it all just takes perfect sense.

I think she said that bc she didn't want to bring a child into that lifestyle

I think the one of the kids names is willow because of the mockingjay lullaby “Deep in the meadows, under the willows” and how the song reminds Katniss of Prim and Rue!🥰😁❤️

Katniss’ main reason for not wanting to have kids is not wanting them going to the hunger games. Now they have ended, over time she will be more comfortable with the idea. Of course (as stated in the books) it takes her a while to be comfortable with having a child, which is only logical knowing the hunger games will have forever affected her. And Katniss being Katniss most likely wouldn’t think she would be that great of a mother, especially with her nightmares. In between the hunger games and when she decides to have a child, her love for Peeta will have the ability to grow and she will be able to heal enough from trauma and etc to live a happy life and therefore her dislike of having her own children evaporates. As also stated in the epilogue of the last book, she didn’t really like having the child growing in her until she got to hold her, probably pushing her to have another child so soon after. As we all know, Peeta most definitely wanted children, so in the end, her decision to have children was most likely because she loved Peeta enough that with his support, she would be willing to have children. You might think she’s out of character, but, well, of course she is gonna be. During the events of the hunger games she’s a teenager, and now she’s in her late 20s - 30s. Of course she’s gonna change in ways, especially as she learns she is now free from the capitol, and she no longer has to risk her life to survive. She’s an adult now, and with adulthood comes change. And when the war ended there was change. So of course she, alongside some of her traits, are going to change in certain ways. Considering this, she most likely stopped disliking the idea of pregnancy so much due to the change in circumstances and growth in her love for Peeta.

She didn’t want kids because of the hunger games but now it’s over she wouldn’t have to worry about them fighting for their lives so that’s why she had them

I love the scene where they have kids but I think she’s not forced into because in the movie she says because I don’t want my children to be in the hunger games but now that they’re not in the hundred games I think I feel that she may want to have kids now

I think that the names would be: Girl: Primrose or Prim or Rose Boy: Finnick or Finn or Cinna My reasonings for Prim are that Katniss loved her sister and after her dying from the war ,which was most likely staged by Coin, she would name her daughter after someone she loved very much out of respect. My reasonings for Finnick is that Finnick died saving Katniss' life and even saved Peeta's once. She would name both her kids after these people out of respect.

I love the decision. It shows that Katniss helped create a world where she can feel safe to have kids.

I think the Girl is obviously Primrose or another flower in tribute to Prim, the boy is most likely to be Thresh or Cinna. Edit: both of their middle names would be 'hope'

She was always motherly, and once Katniss knows they'll be safe, ahe feels ok having them. The ending is bittersweet, as she is often still wracked with guilt and nightmares and has trouble interacting with the world at all. Being so broken she struggles to be there despite loving motherhood dearly. It's tragic, realistic, and the best ending she could have got given the circumstances

I just wanted to point something out-Katniss has been through an extremely dramatic experience, and I know she cares deeply for Prim, Rue, Finnick etc. but I think naming her child something like that would result in her thinking about them nonstop. Which would only make her sadder. But with Annie, I think it would make sense for her to name her son Finnick, just based on her personality. So basically, Katniss naming her children after one of her passed loved ones would bring back too many memories.

The girl name might be Prim Rue Malark and the boy might be Finn Cinna Malark. (Willow and Finn were my first thoughts)

I think she had them to get back at gale. Having children was the only thing stopping Katniss perusing a relationship with him, and because gale was partially the reason for Prims death, she wants gale to feel what it’s like for someone you love so much never come back and gale would feel that as he’s seeing Katniss have a life he so badly wanted with her but he can’t have. That’s if he knew she had the children of course.

And you can tell in the epilogue scene that katniss is as made to look older but not old

I find it interesting that Katniss and Peeta is kind of a mirrored image of Katniss' parents relationship. Except Katniss is from the seam and Peeta from the merchants. They too have an inter-class marriage/ partnership. But Collins changed it slightly by giving the girl (said to be called Willow) a mix of dark hair and blue eyes and giving the boy (who Collins admitted to calling Rye) blond hair and grey eyes.

I have read a fan fiction where their daughter (Rue) is in the games, joins the carreers wins and then punches the cohost and goes to prison. An absolute legend

The reason I think Katniss had kids was because the reaping was over, yes she said she didn't want kids but that's because of the reaping. Also I think it's fine naming there kids after the dead, it might turn the bad memories into good ones, associating them with a better life for everyone.

Plus in the book she mentions that Peeta really wanted children with her so she did and she realized how much she loved her children, and that they're safe. The way I always saw it was how it was said in the book “Peeta wanted them”. While people say it was out of character for her, we really saw he during survival situations so she has grown and changed.

The entire series is showing how we are all essential in this “game”. the ending Explains how we must always fight to find a way and keep our humanity alive.

even tho it’s only speculation, i do understand the reasons behind katniss and peeta’s children’s names. willow for the “deep in the willow” song and rye because it’s a type of bread like peeta (pita). their middle names are probably named after people who have died before (rue, prim, cinna, etc.)

I definitely feel she may call her daughter (if she has one) Prim, in memory of her sister. We don’t know her dads name but maybe she called her son (if she has one) her fathers name. Peeta probably wanted to name one after one of his brothers maybe as all of his family died in the destruction of District 12

I think maybe they could have named the girl Blossom because it's a way to honour both Prim and Rue at the same time, or another flower-derived name. Maybe the boy would have been called Jay (in reference to the mockingjay) or Fletcher (in reference to arrows/archery)

I think their kids would be friends with Finnick and Annie's son also it would be cool to see Haymitch as their "grandfather" since the kids never get to meet their real grandfathers

I think the lost of her father was also a impotant fact that impacted on Katniss mind. She had to be like a mom for Prim after his death and had trouble in this situation back then. In combination with the many situations were she almost lost Peeta she must have been very scared that her kinds could get in the same trouble she was after loosing her father. I'm pretty sure the girl would probably be the name of the flower she put around rue, but also symbolising the element of primrose's name as she was named after a flower. The boy most likely would be something to symbolise everyone else instead of favouring someone es death over anyone elses.

I see a lot of people saying that Katniss and Peeta's children would be named after some of the dead characters... um, we're not in Harry Potter... I don't think they would have done something like that
