Better yet, Cloud FINALLY got his home game released on said platform...just in time for Joker to become the new "PlayStation dude in Smash" joke. Nintendo had the balls to do this TWICE. Hell, thrice if you count Snake, but at least this game bothered to have Raiden.
Making a game called "Playstation ALL STARS" and not including Crash Bandicoot, the character that basically sold the original Playstation, is so mind boggling I simply can't even believe this game is real.
True, but let's be fair, the only reason Crash and Spyro didn't fly for Playstation All-Stars was because Activision held the IPs and were being colossal cocks about it.
The devs tried numerous times to get crash and spyro in the game but Activision being the greedy jerks they are asked for too much money for crash alone let alone spyro so yeah
They would have to change a lot with it for people to get interested in it. It'll be hard to make a platformer fighting game that either stands along side or exceeds smash. Art style is reletively easy to change, but gameplay would be the most challenging thing to change. Not against it, but they would need some really creative people to work on the project
@@teneesh3376 maybe they could make a in game reason for the difference in art style at the begging with the option to change it between allstars 1 and a unified art style in the settings.
Also with Raiden, for all he was rocking the Rising look, he an already an established character, already appearing in 2 games, making him worthy to be considered a star. DmC Dante however... I don't get why couldn't get classic Dante as well, especially when you consider that we had two Coles
@@robertachtelik1058 yes I know Heihachi's been there since the beginning but if they had more money and time (i.e. not getting fucked by Sony) I see no problem with both Heihachi and Klonoa being there.
Dude this video could be half the length, you keep going round in the same loop over and over when explaining how they tried to split themselves between casual and hardcore in mechanics and aesthetic. Bullet point your scripts so you can make sure you're not repeating points.
I was thinking the *exact* same thing when he said the word "slapstick" like two dozen times After two minutes, I was like "didn't he just say this? Why is this point so important that it even bears repeating at all? It's literally your opinion about why you would play something that you're hammering again and again." Not a good use of time at all. E: 5 minutes later, same issue - it's just repeating... Again
@@underdog353777 agreed this video sucks and his i dont even think he has good arguments why PSASBR failed, yes the roster sucks and the stage design sucks BUT who the fuck cares about slapstick or art style or the way characters contrast. Also making this game into a traditional fighter is the opposite of what most people wanted, the majority wanted a straight up PLAYSTATION SMASH BROS, one huge reason why this game failed is because it didnt copy smash enough in terms of gameplay and scoring system EDIT: this game mostly sucked because of the gameplay. You can only kill via Supers meaning everything else you do is just a way to fill a super meter. On top of that certain characters had OP as shit supers that could KO 4 ppl while other characters had terrible supers that only KO'd one character. It was terrible game play system, they would have been much better off copying Smash scoring and gameplay than what they ended up doing. Imagine Smash for a second but the only way you can kill is by using the Smash ball, zero other ways to kill, score points, knock opponents off the map.fact in PSALBR the maps didnt have ledges due to the shitty system.
It's not his fault, the RU-vid algorithm encourages content like this. He's got to get his videos above ten minutes. Sure he could make the same video and summarize all the points he made in about 3 minutes, but there goes all his views/ad revenue.
John LaBonte ok but he stretched it out to almost 20 minutes it didn’t need to be that long it could have been about 10 minutes if he really needed that ad revenue
I think this franchise deserves a second chance. Sony has a huge roster to draw from, with so many possibilities for a PlayStation cinematic universe type of story. They just need a competent developer to handle it and make something that feels like more than just a paid beta.
Only if they completely delete that rule where you can only KO someone with your super. That made matches between two people who were anything but unbelievably bad almost impossible to finish.
Agreed. Even more so when he says that Snake of all characters didn't feel as out of place in comparison. I think he's not really grasping what "slapstick" actually entails. I'd say Smash 64 was the only time where one could say everybody and everything had bounce and wacky SFX and an almost comical style that portrayed "slapstick action". Afterward it more depended on the characters' animations. Friendlier characters like Mario still sports expanding fists and feet when attacking while cuddly fighters like Kirby and Pikachu stretch and flatten in cartoonish fashion. Samus never did anything close to this. Not in 64 when she was at her brightest and most disproportionate, and certainly not ever since. All of her actions are to the point and considerably reserved compared to the less serious characters. And yet she's hardly a huge contrast. Not when you also have armored swordsmen and space traveling animals and magic wielders and martial artists. There are plenty of characters with a more serious tone. "Slapstick" doesn't describe the gameplay either. Sure it's far from realistic to see fighters flying and careening everywhere. It's definitely wacky and crazy. But not slapstick as a whole.
that whole rant just made me end the video. i just paused it and scrolled down to read the comments. that rant made everything he says invalid as he clearly doesnt understand anything about fighting games, smash, or the term slapstick.
Fun fact: the character designer of PaRappa the rapper was excited to see PaRappa again in this game, but he didn’t like the fact that he would beat people up rather than...well, rap.
now that I think about it, a rapping style would've definitely done parappa more justice. Its like if wii fit trainer punched and kicked rather than doing flexes and working out
Waluigi In Smash But the designer _was_ happy to see parappa in the game, he just didn't think it was in-character for parappa to be punching and kicking when parappa's home series have always been about cartoonish rhythm games.
There are so many comments harping on that one word that I'm convinced they don't have an argument beyond "he says slapstick a lot and I find it annoying"
@@brainycat5758 this video sucked either way, he harps on the same shit over and over way too long. tbh i dont even think his most his arguments are the reason why this failed. in fact i most ppl believe PSASBR was fundamentally too different from Smash in terms of ONLY SUPERS CAN KILL and the stage designs/combo system. Also the name sucks and the roster sucked.
Joshua Suh Those aren’t really PlayStation mascots, Metal Gear had a few games before PlayStation, Persona is a spin-off of the Shin Magami series which also had games before PlayStation, and even if Cloud came from a PlayStation game, he’s part of the Final Fantasy franchise that also had games before PlayStation.
Joshua Suh But PlayStation never officially considered them mascots, Crash and Spyro were both considered mascots by PlayStation and the community, but PlayStation didn’t own the rights to either so they couldn’t make them official mascots.
How is Samus "Slapstickified"? She still acts just as serious as she does is her main game series. Her animations are perfectly accurate and realistic, not being kooky and crazy like... Well, already kooky and crazy characters.
I'm not a Smash Bros player, so I could be missing more stuff, but at the very least she is slapstickified by her interactions with the items and other characters. Wearing bunny ears, slipping on banana peels, getting swallowed in a single cartoon gulp by a pink ball, etc.
Very weird take on the Smash competitive scene to show nothing that actually represents competitive Melee and absolutely no footage from Ultimate, considering when this video was made. Not that that was the main point of the video, but it's odd nonetheless
What is this? A RU-vid video that isn’t sponsored by Raid: Shadow Legends? Impossible! EDIT: While I’m at it with the commentary on obnoxious RU-vid trends, here’s a PSA for those who leave award speeches for getting 1k likes: while your comment on RU-vid was certainly appreciated, your thanks are not needed because everyone was applauding your comment, not you. My comment is indicative of an attitude toward a RU-vid trend and while the comment resonates with a lot of people, there are plenty of other comments of mine that probably represent myself more and have been forgotten to everyone not working for the FBI. Remember that episode of Spongebob Squarepants when he appears on an ad for half a second and proceeds to act like a celebrity? You’re acting like that.
That, or go the Urban Reign/Def Jam fighting game route where it's a simple brawler type with peripheral weapons, specials, Parappa being the DJ/Announcer, etc. I feel that would give All-Stars much more of an identity and would (imo) be much easier to balance and design in terms of art direction, mechanics, and aesthetics or what are all predominantly 3D titles.
Yup! Maybe even add character specific QTE whenever there's a big clash, like if there are specials/heavy attacks colliding, a fight for an in fight item, or a time up gimmick. We gotta make this happen, lol
The central problem is not being able to do direct damage to your opponent outside of special moves. It just isn't fun when it feels like you aren't accomplishing anything and if you miss your special move you wasted even more time doing nothing.
It's honestly kinda funny, how a fighting game that has actual combos in them rewards scrub tactics and button mashing moreso than a fighting game featuring Mario, Link, Kirby, and Ridley. Seriously man, All-Stars has so many combos for you to learn, yet you can easily win most matches by camping in a corner and lobbing shit from afar to build up meter.
A A I feel like if they wanted to do this special shit, it would be better to have a life meter system, and you can only kill someone with a special after it reaches zero, but the special itself is weak, otherwise...
This is the irony. People complain that it is a complete rip off of Smash, then complain how it is ot smash. I like this system. What's nice, is that regardless of how much you are hit, you are never unable to make a comeback. Hits aren't meaningless however. The more hits you make, the faster your gauge builds. There is not falling off screen to your death either. I find this game much more accessible in these ways.
The Electronic Emotions Program Yeah, but it’s still an awful system. The combos almost seem pointless since all it really does in possibly increase your gauge more, and you can outright miss most non-level 3 specials...
smash bros characters all feel like how they are supposed to feel (if that makes any sense) mario in smash feels like mario in mario games, as does luigi, as does bowser. kirby in smash feels like kirby in kirby games, as does metaknight, as does king DeeDeeDee Pikachu feels like pikachu, etc, etc. they all play like you would expect them to play in their own game. as for psasbr Sweet tooth.... doesn't feel like sweet tooth. last time i checked, sweettooth drove an icecream truck with guns on it and fired homing clown heads; he didn't carry a chainsaw and jump around. sly cooper was a stealthy character that specialized in quiet assassination and sneaking about, not melee combat. infact, sly games often tell you to try to avoid combat, because you aren't a bruiser like murray. etc, etc.
@@gabrieltorres6633 yes i've played sly cooper. i've played all 4, and loved the first 3 (did NOT love 4). sly has plenty of sneaking moves, but in terms of combat, he has Hit, hit upwards (followed by insta kill in stealth), jump then hit, and spin hit (not very useful in the games). it feels like sony looked at smash bros and said "oooooh, so it's a mascot brawler, ok. so who do we have as mascots?" and one of the employees responded "we have that clown guy, and uh.... the sneaky dude." now if they put *T H E M U R R A Y* in psabr, that would make sense. he was the muscle of the group. sly was the sneak, the thief. most of what he did had to do with quietly stealing stuff and not getting hit. in the first game he literally died if someone hit him once.
Snake is a stealth character. But in Smash he has explosives. Luigi is a scared character, but in Smash you have ti be afraid of grab. I love both games man, and yeah AllStars isnt perfect. But “making the characters the same as their game” doesn’t make too much sense, why would they make sweet tooth in his car the whole time? And why would they make Sly Cooper sneak around? Hes already has a move that gives him invisibility, thats all they can really do. What make him completely out if sight and hide behind a car or something?
@@NVS_Snake snake is indeed stealthy. He is also trained in cqc, guns of all types, and explosives. Ever play mgs4? You can fight people with a tranq gun, a shotgun, an smg, even a rocket launcher. As for Luigi, Luigi is indeed scared, but the entire game is about him pushing forward in spite of his fear in order to save his brother.
Most Nintendo games have surprisingly deep lore. F-Zero comes to mind. Pikmin is pretty fleshed out as well. Really, the only games represented by a character in Smash that do not have pretty deep lore are characters with no plot in their games. Game & Watch, Ice Climbers, Duck Hunt, etc. Even R.O.B. has his own Smash specific lore that's actually pretty tragic if you know it.
"I don't want to buy Smash Bros. based on (Metroid's) inclusion." Now first off, you're definitely a minority in that regard. The brilliant, goofy commercial showing four people in costumes beating each other up while "So Happy Together" plays in the background was an insta-buy for me and thousands of others. MaximillianDood of Doodbronia did numerous videos on the importance of characters in fighting games. My big hype for the inclusion of certain characters isn't solely on Sakurai's brilliant attention to detail, mountains of references and slapping music tracks. It's the fact that the characters included in Smash are now recognized as gaming icons. Millions of people are going to see Ridley or Banjo and go "Oh this character is cool! I wonder what game he/she is from" and then want to get into that franchise. Smash Bros. introduced me to Metroid and Earthbound, which are now some of my favorite games. Fire Emblem was not even relevant in the west until Marth came to Melee, now it's one of Nintendo's biggest IPs. The biggest example is Megaman, who was included in 2014's Smash 4. Before that, Megaman fans were practically beaten to death by Capcom with about a dozen games getting cancelled and Mighty No. 9 being a tire-fire. Now in 2019 Capcom is actually giving Megaman the respect he deserves: he got a new game, countless collections and even crosses over with other franchises now. By god I hope that happens with Banjo-Kazooie, or at least Castlevania. Playstation All-Stars literally lost me by not including Crash. Crash fucking Bandicoot: literally THE most famous Playstation icons and Sony just couldn't bother to talk to Activision to let them borrow him. Meanwhile Sakurai dives into oncoming traffic to get Cloud and Solid Snake. It shows that Sony didn't love their characters as much as Nintendo loves theirs. (Nintendo loves theirs TOO much, but I'll take that over too little.)
Gotta agree. Smash introduced me to a buncha franchises because I thought a character was cool. Plus you gotta look at all the love and representation Smash got. I cant be the only one who would read the trophy descriptions to know about characters origins or go to sound test to listen to the music.
Honestly, while Samus is a very serious character, I would say she still fits in pretty well with the tone of Smash Bros., especially since the series has taken on a slightly more serious (if over the top) tone since Melee and just becoming more edgy with Brawl. Also all the Metroid characters have a good amount of color to them, like the rest of the cast, so I still think they make sense. I kind of raised an eyebrow at that part of the video, but I guess it's to each their own.
Imo as a Metroid and competitive Smash fan, the game does a good job conveying the feeling of even the more serious characters. You don't feel slapstick when you play as Ridley, for example. With the effects on his moves he manages to convey all of the brutality and ruthlessness from his home game. They make a big effort to have the characters represent their home games properly.
"Sony just couldn't bother to talk to Activision to let them borrow him. Meanwhile Sakurai dives into oncoming traffic to get Cloud and Solid Snake." lol as if whether a company agrees to a licensing deal or not depends on the passion of game director. It just shows Super Smash has a much bigger budget than Playstation Allstars. Super Smash is one of Nintendo's mainline entires while PS Allstars was just a small spin-off non-important title while Sony were pouring their money into big titles like Uncharted and The Last of Us.
Actually Sony DID try to get Crash. Activision however didn't want to. If there's someone they didn't ask for a character it would have to be Square Enix.
Kratos and big daddy look so out of place in every cartoony stage like little big planet and the parappa de rapper, and the cartoony characters look out of place in more realistic games
Sony: *looks at Super Smash Bros Ultimate* Yeah, that's one fine looking crossover fighting game! *looks at PlayStation All-Stars* WHY DOESN'T MINE LOOK LIKE THAT?!
@@CollegeBallYouknow Are you talking about comics based on PlayStation games? I vaguely remember an inFAMOUS comic series, but was there more beyond that?
Or they could have made it like Power Stone. It would even make the game more light hearted since they could lower the realistic style to something closer to Disney Infinity.
E Peen 1: the game is shit. 2: Nothing will unseat melee’s throne for many years; it’s scene is way too big to fail, and there is still new tech being discovered 20 years after the game was released.
Aiden Taylor You mean exploits? Abusing the physics engine is not glitching, because technically the game is not doing something it isn’t intended to do. The only thing you could call glitched are PS collision issues.
Waddles ワドさん hah no worries mate, it’s a joke. A lot of melee is just exploiting its busted ass system and finding things that really shouldn’t exist, glitches just seemed like a funnier word than exploits haha. But a lot of the stuff were still finding is just how to push that system held together by duct tape and zip ties, I think luigis glass ceiling is an example of this lmao

Ryu: You got yourself a character! All Stars: Damn! Alright I'll take Big Daddy Smash Brothers: I'll take Cloud Stife! All Stars: D'Oh
All Stars: Can I get Dante? Capcom: Sure! Nintendo: You are going to give us Mega Man and if you give us some pathetic excuse of a character like bad box art Mega Man I will snap your tiny little- Capcom: Yes sir! Just spare me alright?!?! All Stars: Can I still that classic, white haired Dante though? I mean... he doesn't have to be perfect...
Real big boy failure on Sony's part there. Up until xiii FF was basically their ip by virtue of not appearing in other consoles outside of the mmo game, not having sora from kh was also a big fuck up. They had such a great lineup but failed to recognize it.
I wanted this game to succeed so much. I followed it every second of the day, and for it to just fall flat and feel so cheap just broke my heart. Especially since I'm such a PlayStation fan.
and it had so many good qualities. Most Characters are absolute bad-asses, Polygon-Man as the Endboss is really cool, the arenas were great too espacially dlc stages. For gods sake it was a brand-new ip. what the hell did they expect? it still needs a sequel!
As someone who’s put like 1000 hours into the game, cheap is a good word to describe it. I was 12 when it came out and I remember being so confused first booting it up, it felt like it lacked a *lot* polish in its every aspect which I just wasn’t used to back then. Even the menus are a bit hideous. My excitement was out of this world and I was let down because I do genuinely love PlayStation as a brand and it’s franchises. That said, I still clearly really enjoy the game with the amount of time I’ve put into it but fuck it’s flaws are so sad and obvious. I’d nut for a sequel.
My only hope of a new crossover game featuring Playstation characters is being remarkably vocal about it towards Sony and even then, the feeling of Sony not even bothering to rule out that possibility keeps biting me in the ass, and I hate it cause I'm not a pessimist, I'm an optimist.
What's unique about the success of the competitive scene of Smash Bros is the technical competitive mechanics of the game are not necessary to get a full base experience. The mechanics that give you more combo potential are only optimizations (such as cancelling landing lag or giving precise positional control), and not hard-coded set combo systems. Without the optimizations, you can still develop a cohesive feel for the game and enjoy it at it's core elements. What is also important is that Smash Bros is mechanically simple with complex options, which gives it a lane as a casual game while still giving it competitive elements to surprise your friends with.
I think one BIG problem is licenses. Nintendo owns, or at least has a majority ownership, 90% of the Smash bros IPs. Sony doesn't have as many IP's it directly owns. Crash and Spyro are activision for example and that means license deals need funding. I'd also say there's a big difference in how Sony and nintendo operate. nintendo is 100% a games company, and they have an old-school-Disney-esk ethos of making charming games that everyone can play leading to that easier meshing of styles. Sony games is a portion of a larger corperation that mostly has other people make games for them and any games they can. And if one studio wanted to leave an IP behind that was fine with them. Their library has changed and evolved over time to fit the market. Both ways are valid and both have seen success and failure, but Sony's approach to IP building is just to let older titles wither on the vine.
Apparently the money asked for crash was way over their budget. Nimte do was able to create two great he's on their based of their first party IPs and then with that reputation start to find guest characters. By current smash companies are way more likely to beg for Nintendo to be in Smash because it solidifies your work in what is slowly becoming the gaming canon christallized. PSAB doesn't have that legacy
@Bret Hart "Why didn't they negotiate and pay?" It was always going to be expensive but the difference is that 3rd parties go to Nintendo to ask for their characters to be put in Smash, not the other way around.
@@BigBrotherGnE yes that's because being in Smash is great advertising and exposure for whatever series the guest character comes from so 3rd parties benefit from their inclusion as much as Nintendo but Nintendo doesn't need them to sell copies of Smash. Sony NEEDS those 3rd party characters in their game while the 3rd parties don't get nearly as much benefit hence they ask for money.
@@404cp - That is a very true statement. Perfectly said, my good man. I think we could allude to the PlayStation Classic as another case on the matter. However...Sony does have first party characters now, but none of them really hold the same sort of iconic impact as Nintendo's roster.
You say that buuuuuuuuuuuut I swear they're more similar to each other than Smash, intentionally or not. Its almost impossible to get kills in PTE aside form using your big special you have to get from filling your blue super meter. Sound familiar?
Well, her backstory is pretty intense: she's an orphan, ridley frickin ATE her parents, and she was raised by bird people yadda yadda, so it can be a little jarring to see her use a baseball bat to smack the shit out of donkey kong. (personally, i never minded since i first saw her in smash 64 when i was a kid and hadn't played any of her games)
Her father blew up himself trying to destroy ridley and save samus, while har mother got killed and ridley Ate her corpse in order to regenerate Also her chozo father, gray voice, got killed by ridley too, when the space dragon used his laser to destroy him (and a Mountain)
@@AstralTaurus what you don't realize is that smash does a phenomenal job at staying faithful to the character's personalities THROUGH MOVESETS. This is a fighting game. you don't have to like them, but stop coming to a fighting game looking for serious story and character complexity. that's not why you fuckin play smash. P.S. if playing with items on is so jarring, why don't you try turning it off? it is an entirely different experience across all smash games that way.
@@femtohimself71 I like occasionally using Samus but your "argument" is invalid. People aren't gonna turn off items or skip the game entirely just because playing as Samus in that context doesn't appeal to them. Nor are they gonna change their opinion because you got mad & cussed at them. And no one said they came to Smash for serious story or character complexity. If I say I don't like watching a character who relies on dialogue in a medium that has none, that doesn't mean I came to the medium for dialogue. It just means I won't be enjoying that particular character as much. I don't like that Corrin, Chrom, Wii Fit Trainer, Zero Suit Samus, Duck Hunt Dog, Greninja, & Dark Pit are in Smash but it'd be pretty ridiculous to quit the game over it.
To be honest, this was a really great game when actually played how it works. This should not have been a 4 player brawl, but a 1v1 game. The way the characters are made, work extremely well for a 1v1 style game. The stages were built for party game, but the move sets worked on stages that were made for 1v1 combat. If people had health bars and were in a 1v1 arena, this game would shine much more. It has wall combos, standard combos that lead into bursts, and special moves. An extremely deep fighting system. This is definently a 1v1 fighter more.

toujo4 true. I don't agree with what he said by the game being more favored in design with the mind of the casual. Devs can design a game however they want in a fighting game, all it comes down to in games like all stars is, is my favorite character in it though? That's it. This game was meant to be smash bros like but competitive and have cool combos and stuff but it was not done with the budget obviously to make it as big as a game as smash or game like marvel V's Capcom it looked like. I liked the game, all stars.
He defended smash by praising it and constantly saying how psasbr failed to be like it, and congratulated smash by showing its very dedicated community and the legacy it leaves And yet you complain for the 2 or 3 things he didnt personally like Nintendrone detected, insert slapstick
As a counterpoint to Samus, she still works in Smash because she's essentially that crossover's Straight Man/Only Sane Man trope. All these wacky, zany characters slapping each other around would make Samus eye roll half the time with the amount of tragic crap she's been through and fought her way out of. She works because she's the ONLY no nonsense serious character in the entire roster, even Ridley pushes it closer to the cast because he was a cocky prick in his trailer while we see Samus in said trailer going "oh not this guy again..." Even the characters in Smash that have tragedies in their stories (literally all of the sword wielders, and I don't just mean Fire Emblem) have moments of light hearted antics. When you have PSASBR (good Lord why) have Big Daddy, Sweet Tooth, that Killzone guy and friggin DmC Dante as some of your highlights, you've flatly missed the point of the more serious characters in a wacky Smash game. And even better for the unifying art style point: As Max will tell you, Smash's rendition of other fighting game characters. Ryu, Ken and Terry look like they firmly belong in the same universe as the purple pterodactyl, yellow electric rat and more than half a dozen anime swordsmen. That sentence should not be a thing, but it is.
Smash makes every character presented feel like they belong there, even if they're not a Nintendo character. Sonic's reveal was kinda eh, but it made him blend in nicely. Snake's was the start of the "you've been invited to smash" trend, which makes sense taken the characters they choose for DLC: A cinematic and heroic trailer for the Hero, a good reference to Persona 5 and side content inside Smash to welcome Joker even more, Banjo and Kazooie feel like they are finally home after 11 years, and Terry's trailer is a really nice throwback to the Neo Geo cutscenes
UltimaKeyMaster plus Samus already had cameos in Super Mario RPG and Kirby’s Dream Land 3. Her being in Smash Bros isn’t that big of a stretch. Especially when you remember the lore of the series is someone playing with their toys
As an addition to this argument, I really don't feel like Samus' appearance in smash feels like it strays too far from her flipping several meters through the air using screw attack in her home games
I think it speaks to the failure of this game's roster that Smash includes arguably more iconic PlayStation characters in Snake and Cloud than it does. Hell, even Joker is more immediately relevant to the PlayStation brand than most of the characters in All-Stars (though of course his game released later).
MO: this was one of the funnest titles I’ve played on PS3 back in the day. Me and my sisters would sit on the same screen and play online against others all day for atleast 2 years. Of course, it wasn’t perfect, but if you took it for what it was, it was a damn good time
I loved the game, i think that it was fun despite flaws. Definitely needed a sequel. And a bit more personality. So many choices were put there purely because of companies cash grabbing (Dante being the dmc4 one was a result of this, Activision wanted a million dollars just to include him)
the funny thing is, it's just a game formula, using it with different mechanics is not plagiarism, mortal kombat is not a plagiarism of streetfighter, nor is marvel vs capcom, darkstalkers, snk, samurai showdown, etc...
I really feel like you repeated yourself a lot in this video The "competitive vs casual" discussion dragged on a lot more than it needed to, in my opinion
I zoned out around the ten minute mark when I realized he was just repeating himself. The I saw that there was going to be eight more minutes of it, so I scrolled down to the comments to see if anyone else noticed.
This is why it's important to edit your script a bunch. I felt the same way, I thought I was having a stroke when he kept going on about the casual competitive thing.
Needs a sequel where they decide on whether they want a cartoony game or a more serious fighter. Then make immersive gameplay. THEN focus on the roster.
I had more fun with it than any Smash Brothers game. First people bitched about it because it was too much like Super Smash Brothers, but when it came out and played NOTHING like Super Smash, people bitched that it wasn't Super Smash Brothers enough lol.
@@JohnnySkrimblo eeeh i dont know about the story being unique but using the polygon man as the main villain was fucking genius, the rivalries where also really fun
the whole presentation of the game has always seemed off for me, where as in super smash bros all the characters look like they belong and unified under one art style. it meets a point where worlds like fire emblem and metal gear solid can collide where as here it feels like they just grabbed some characters and plopped them down regardless of there appeal, I love like sly cooper but some of these characters are straight unappealing. I'd say big daddy is the most interesting of choices. also didn't know Heihachi was here.
The Super attack thing in this really rubs me the wrong way. It's like they knew their game was a shameless Smash Bros clone so they had to throw in SOMETHING to make it different even though that something makes the game much worse. Games that are "inspired by" older classic games pull this crap all the time.
Even then, it's so blatantly saying "people like Final Smashes, let's force you to use them to win." It turns the single aspect of trying to seem different into an outright lie of its intent.
@@MattTheHuman9 some characters like heihachi have level 3 threes that just instakill you no matter what, because they're cut scenes, which is fun i guess.
@@incelliousthewizard7883 I hate cutscene Final Smashes, especially in Smash Ultimate where there are so many of them, they all feel the same... I can't imagine them being any fun at all in this.
Let's talk about Sir Daniel Fortesque. They did my man so fucking dirty in this game. First of all, half his moveset is as slow as a turtle on molasses, so characters can just move out of the way or dodge him real easily. Secondly, his super moves are total shite. A perfect example is his first super, where he shoots a lightning bolt diagonally in the air at short range. HOW SITUATIONAL IS THAT?! His second super is a goblet homing attack that can be dodged pretty easily if you know what your doing, so again, pretty useless against hardcore players. Which means his only useful super is his full charge super, which even then people can get out of by just running away from you. Whoever balanced this game should be drawn and quartered.
I can appreciate the critique of the game suffering from not knowing whether to choose between a serious or casual fighting game aesthetic in terms of design, but, ironically, that's a big part of where a lot of my enjoyment from this game came from. I have always wanted to like traditional fighting games, but found the barrier for entry exceedingly frustrating, because it requires memorization of long, often not very intuitive combos in order to play well. And while I had fun playing Smash Bros, my absolute least favorite part of them was actually a feature you mentioned you felt leant to a more fun party game experience: random deaths due to ring outs. Smash's chaotic action makes it really easy to lose track of your character and fall off the edge of the stage, which is really annoying when you're at a party with a lot of other people very skilled at the game - the number of times I've been to a party where I only got to play Smash for about three seconds before being forced to watch the two remaining expert players get to duke it out for about fifteen more minutes nearly put me off liking that series. So to have a game that had just enough complexity to demand attention without button mashing that didn't just toss out random deaths, but also was flexible enough that you could pick up a character and get the gist of them after hitting some buttons hit my sweet spot.
I really struggled with the roster. Sweet Tooth, Isaac Clarke (Dead Space), edgy Dante, Big Daddy, Kratos, Radec and Zeus just seem like such an odd fit for a fun and lighthearted party fighter. I mean, Kratos was marketed as All-Stars 'Mario' character and designed for beginners to be easy to pick up and play. Having these violent characters from gruesome games mixing alongside the G and PG-rated characters just seemed so tonally weird. Corpse stomping, limb cutting Isaac Clark just seems absurdly out of place. There are so many third-party characters that have a long history with Playstation and they chose to modern, multi-platform games (some of which hadn't even been released and some, like Bioshock, which not only released later on PS3 but also ran terribly). Less of a celebration and more of an advertisement. In terms of the actual fighting, however, I really liked it and spent a long time playing online.
The "defeat only by Super" mechanic was done way better in the Saint Seiya fighting games for the PS2. There you only get 1 round, and if you are defeated, you can stand again doing some button mashing, but it gets increasingly difficult to the point you will no longer get up, but if you defeat your opponent with a Super, they don't even access the recovery screen. This is a really cool mechanic, because this super moves can be reversed if you know the quick time event to do a counter mid animation, keeping it with the lore of "no move works twice on a saint" as performing a super and not defeating an opponent means you revealed/reminded them your timing, so next time you perform it can be countered with ease, encouraging the strategic use of the Supers. By no means it's a good competitive fighting game, but the concept of Super-only-defeat is done masterfully.
Nero doesn't really swear anymore unless agitated because remember that he raises orphans so he learned to keep calm and you can see he no longer swears unless in battlefield and has to show how much he dislikes someone or they're the worst like Vergil. If it was DMC4 Nero then yes he would say that but he has mellowed out and is more welcoming unless they treat him bad but he'll still not swear as again, he has learned there's no point in swearing 24/7 or have anger but even when he got mad, he doesn't threaten people but swear when asking questions in anxiety like learning his father is a violent and cruel individual even though in that situation with DmC Dante, he wouldn't swear.
Where is literally any Resident Evil character? Leon, Chris, or Jill could have been great. Heck when they announced RE SPIRITS in Smash Bros., that got my hopes high that they could be the new guest fighters. They've had quite their comedic moments and I don't think they'd be out of place.
I was glad too see Gravity Kat finally get some recognition from Sony that she deserved. But it was sad, at the same time cause it was like they dropped her on a sinking ship. And here I was watching from a distance with my binoculars.
Love the hell out of Gravity Rush I got to play on my friend’s vita. While watching this video, seeing her on thete ALMOSTS makes me wish I had a chance to play it.
I mean, they could go based off Smash. It’s like if something that is even similar to Smash is suddenly just a Smash rip off. Like it kind of sucks for anyone who wants a game similarly made, but PlayStation Allstars was KIND OF good tho.
kinda makes me think... aren't all traditional fighters not just a street fighter copy then? By that logic at the very least. What I am saying is, basing a game on smash bros isn't a bad thing if you do it right
While on the topic, there's a rumor that Capcom is developing Playstation All Stars 2 for the upcoming PS5. And strangely, Ed Boon tweeted about this rumor. If this is true, are we going to see Scorpion and Ryu duking out after all these years?
Damn... it's that's true, then it'd be one hell of a crossover! Welp, here's hoping that if that's the case, here's hoping Capcom's gotten it's act together in regards to fighting games.
That "rumor" was some random post on /v/ which has literally hundreds of fake leaks every single week, I have no idea why that one took off when it had nothing sourcing it.
I had a friend that owned it, and we actually put in quite a few hours into it. Had pretty good times. But the game is undeniably flawed. It's like every positive thing comes with a bigger negative to reach a net loss. I actually thought the stage designs and graphics were interesting (mostly) and worked well, and the stage worlds crashing together was interesting and unique. ...But then the default stage motions and hazards were easy to lose characters in and distracting. Admittedly a smaller problem since many things could be turned off, but still. The character designs were pretty good and the motions were well executed for representing the characters' personalities. ...But they all clash against eachother and generally don't fit the areas they're in. Cohesive design would have done wonders. The core mechanic- the Special kills- feel amazing to land. They also feel TERRIBLE to miss. They also mean that whoever masters the one-to-two special kills will fundamentally have an advantage against anyone who opts for 3rd tier specials by preference (or lack of skill at landing lower specials). I frequently built large leads in matches against my friends simply due to the fact that I was better at (mostly 2nd tier) lower specials than my friends, so they "learned" to opt for the overpowered 3rd tiers... which meant they didn't pull off as many moves, and thus kept losing anyways. Like a handicap rubber-banding mechanic for weaker players that also doesn't actually help. I admit I'm not sure how I would fix the situation with the game's core setup, outside of an overhaul. The gameplay was actually decently fun, and pulling off combos was rewarding if silly. Except for the fact that movement never felt quite... "natural". Like jumping never quite felt right, or maybe too floaty for the realistic characters. The menus look bad. Like stock placeholder buttons and mono-color backgrounds that were meant to be replaced at some stage of development. There is no positive point for them. A big comment, I know, but I have surprisingly strong feelings about a game I'm almost equivalently neutral towards. Part of me hopes it gets a second chance some day. The rest of me hopes it stays silent forever.
My cousin and I played the crap out of this game as well. He mained Kratos while I mained Spike early on and secondaried Kat on her release. It was indeed super fun, but some characters' combo didn't make landing their lower lever super kills as conveniently as others. Also, I hadn't played a lot of these games when this came out (mostly due to being poor), but I got really interested in some of these characters backstory's and ended up buy a few of their games when I could, namely Gravity Rush.
@@Rojin321 It IS really fun. I actually really like it. It's a shame people like this youtuber and many others don't really see the good side about this.
@@dostwood5103 It's not about not seeing the good side. It's about not enjoying the good side enough to be willing to put up with the baffling flaws. Different preferences lead to different priorities. I disliked that super moves enough that there was no reason to play this when I could play any other fighting game & the game is similar enough to Smash that I had no reason to play it over Smash when Smash blows it out of the water in nearly every possible way.
Crash Bandicoot and Spyro were requested to be in the game by the developers, but Activision wanted too much money for the license. Same goes with Lara Croft and Square Enix.
Plus even if they did get to use Spyro and Crash, they'll most likely gonna be in their Skylanders and Titans iterations which It'll be an outright riot to behold
This just reminded me of MediEvil, and i have just downloaded the original and am doing a playthrough now! This demo was my childhood, i never had the full game.
@@reddragoner1932 technically smash does have rivals, just not on the same scale of bringing iconic characters together. See: Rivals of Aether and Slap City
Honestly yeah, and even if he was using it correctly, it's still used way too much for one 20 minute video. Not a deal breaker but slightly distracting
Smash is easy to learn, but hard as fuck to master. It’s a game that your girlfriend who doesn’t really play video games can learn to play rather quickly, but also a game that takes extraordinary skill to get to the truly competitive level, which is something I think makes it a phenomenal game.
@@atomicpunk2360 It really shines in Melee of all games, since Melee’s skill ceiling is absolutely massive due to extremely complex techniques like Multishining and Y-knock back cancelling, the latter of which was only used successfully in Abate’s decisive win over S2J. This isn’t to mention all the complex neutral interactions that are expected of every character. That being said, Ultimate still packs a massive punch in Trad-Fighter style techniques like the Shotos and their Command inputs, Steve and his block mechanics, and (my personal favorite) the Ice Climbers Desync combo. As in grab down throw, buffer jump and down b, input short jab into up tilt footstool twice to Nana Squall Hammer to Popo Fsmash.
Honestly, if this game ever gets a sequel, or if they ever try this type of game again, it should be a marvel vs capcom type game. Like a 3 v 3 tag system. Or honestly just make it a 1 v 1. Competing with smash like that was a death sentence for the game
1. You have the option that would either be solo, tag or 3v3. 2. Each stage is based on each character. 3. Most importantly the character's main themes. 4. Or whatever depends what it needs to be as a sequel...
Yes. Rivals of Aether proves that the concept is not what’s at fault, since Rivals has a thriving competitive scene, looks beautiful, and feels extremely smooth.
Bifflobous Yes, but he also spends half of the video bitching about how it should’ve been a traditional fighter, since platform fighters are for babies.
Bobby Kotick. Also, the game wasn't very good, competitively speaking because of the Super-move only KO's, so most people compared it to Smash and trashed on it.
I found that so many people hated this game for being too much like Smash Bros and then hated it more upon release for not being enough like Smash Bros.
The worst thing than a ripoff is a bad ripoff. If you make a good enough copy but give it your own twist then people will eventually warm up to your game. This worked great for SNK. Otherwise you get this.
@Elvick it's a bad concept because Sony doesn't have the clout to pull it off, Nintendo has more than 30 years of experience making software and all the history (and more importantly IP's) that comes with it. Sony didn't even go full into producing games until late in the PS3 life, which means that the biggest Sony icons aren't _Sony_ icons at all, they are icons that happened to be on PS. How many not gritty man with stubble characters do you think Sony has popped out since the first all star game? Knack and Astrobot. I don't know about you but I don't want another game split between old ass characters from when cartoon mascots where in vouge and gritty old ass men with beards and guns. Like it or not, that IS the Sony family. Your comment itself perfectly outlies why it's a poor concept. None of the characters you say are must haves are owned by them at all, and some of them owned by some of the stingiest companies out there like craptivision and Squeenix. The only other video game company with a catalog of characters as diverse and far reaching as Nintendo is Crapcom (Sega a close third), three guesses as to which two companies are known for massive video game crossovers.
If they make a sequel of this game, then I want to see these characters: 1. Crash Bandicoot 2. Spyro The Dragon 3. Lara Croft 4. Ty The Tasmanian Tiger 5. Nathan Hale 6. Alex Mercer 7. Frank West 8. Sora 9. Pyramid Head 10. 2B
I highly doubt Sora in either Smash or another All stars. Sora is owned by Disney, not SE. To be blunt, if either Sony or Nintendo can get him for a crossover game without forking over too much money would be a miracle imo.
@Joshua Suh Get back to me when it actually happens lol. Square enix is hard, but asking Disney is Maddening imo Still would be neat if it happens, but I don't have my hopes up
Quiel Evolution Gameplays if laziness is really the only explanation you can think of, you must be 13 and have not worked in any kind of business ever. even incompetence is more likely than laziness
If I had a cent for every time I heard "slap stick"... I'd be a wealthy boy If I had a cent for each time he explained wtf that means, I'd be dead in the streets
If they wanted it to be like a traditional fighting game with the combos, they shoulda had kills just be done via life bar like a traditional fighting game. It worked for Jump Super Stars and Jump Ultimate Stars, which is a Smash clone I prefer over Smash itself. Kat deserved to be in a better fighting game.
Heck, look at other platform fighters like Towerfall or Paperbound. They have a health like system yet don't have any of the issues Allstars has. A health meter could have made this game very interesting.
@SuperSmashFan3303 I like that instead of picking a character, you pick 20 "komas" that you can arrange in anyway you want so long as you have at least one playable character in it. You could have a tag team of four mediocre characters, you could have one powerful character with a shit ton of assists, you could have a balanced team, you could sacrifise assists for the sake of passive effects, etc etc. Plus JUS had custom maps before Smash did.
For when you get to the part where he talks about the clash between competetive and casual gameplay, 14:55 He just says the same thing on loop for 5 minutes.
