Why the Contax TVS is great

00:00 Introduction
00:19 Background
Released in 1994, the Contax TVS is kinda like the T2 but with zoom, but also not really.
Equipped with a full titanium body, along with many other features, this definitely isn’t the average run-of-the-mill camera.
So let’s get to it.
00:35 Chapter 1 - Turning the camera on.
By far one of the most unique ways to turn on a point & shoot. To be honest, I think it’s cool.
But, I also think it’s pretty fragile.
Some users online have complained about a wire that breaks after rigorous use.
- But I’ve owned this camera for almost 2 years and it seems to be working fine… for now.
01:01 Chapter 2 - Lens
Equipped with a Zeiss Vario Sonnar lens, the optics are undoubtedly sharp.
It’s 28mm-56mm, f/3.5 at its widest aperture.
I’ve only used it at its maximum zoom, probably once or twice.
01:16 Chapter 3 - Focusing
This camera has both Autofocus and Manual focus (kind of).
It has the conventional half-press to lock focus.
Manual focusing is really cool. You basically rotate the dial until it shows a solid circle. And that’s it. boom.
01:34 Chapter 4 - Exposure
Aperture priority or program. That’s what it does.
Aperture priority gives you good control for taking photos.
Setting the aperture is easy, too.
Even though the shutter speed is automatic, it ranges from bulb to 1/700s, depending on the mode that you’ve set.
01:57 Chapter 5 - Additional Features
It has: A timer, an exposure compensation dial.Panoramic mode. (Mask), the ability to retain flash off on startup.
02:12 Chapter 6 - Shooting the Contax TVS during the Day
03:22 Final Chapter - Shooting the Contax TVS at Night
What I think about the Contax TVS:
Cons:
1. Startup is slow.
Turning on the camera take a bit of time, considering how it's a twist of the lens, then the lens cap. Also, the lens cap is an extra fiddly piece that you'd have to keep in a pocket or something.
2. Weight.
As compared to a MJU i/ii, this camera is heavy.
3. Not as "sharp" as a T2.
Not that I've compared them myself, but just from what I've read online. Also, usually primes are optically sharper.
Pros:
1. Many useful features (AF/MF, Aperture Priority, Timer, Exp Comp)
Even if you don't care about the above functions. One important thing that the TVS does, is to leave the flash OFF on startup. Meaning, the camera doesn't automatically bust a flash if you're shooting street or when you want to be discrete. There's also an additional function which can reel your roll back and leave the leader sticking out... for emergencies I guess?
2. Solid Body
I mentioned the weight, but this camera is really built like a tank. I like it. It makes me feel good using it, knowing that it's not a heap of plastic. Really up to personal preference.
3. Photos come out decent :)
That said about lens and optics and stuff, I'm still impressed with how the photos turn out. Sure it might not compare to the T/2/3, but I love it nonetheless.
Er anyways yeah, I've had it for about 2 years, I'm probably keeping it forever.

if you half press the shutter and zoom in/out the same time, the display will show you the current focal length Also you can set what Mode to start with when you turn on the camera, it's in the custom function Also a nice feature witihin the custom function is that you can set it to leave the film end outside when rewinding, the t2 doesn't have this feature.

How do you set it to leave the film leader out of the canister when rewinding? I can't seem to find that function in the manual,

Just bought myself a TVS ii recently and I’m loving it so far. I think I prefer twisting the lens to turn on and zoom on mine rather than the lever on this model. Gorgeous cameras though

Overall, the TVS II is a better camera than the TVS. Apart from the mentioned points, its lens is a bit sharper, and it covers a more useful zoom range. Note that the lens is not particularly sharp, say compared to a T2, and the T2 is not the end-all folks make it out to be. The zoom is better than what you get on a $200 Pentax or Canon P-n-S with a zoom lens, but that's not saying much. Pasting the "Sonnar" name on the lens is treated by many video makers as proof positive that the lens is "uber", but in fact that is just marketing nonsense, as Zeiss has nothing to do with either the camera or the lens. If I actually used my T2 that much, I'd probably trade it of the TVS II, which offers more for a lot less money. There is the TVS III, which has a significantly better zoom lens, but with its trap-door front opening and some other non-ergonomic controls and readouts, its just not worth the extra trouble or price.

Just bought this as it's about the same price as an Olympus Mju II, but with a better lens and a bunch more features. Would you consider this camera to be big and heavy?
@thehealthpotions
@thehealthpotions 3 года назад
Hi! It is bigger and definitely heavier. But it also depends on what you compare it to. Olympus MJU II? This is way bigger. An ol' slr from the like the SRTs? Then the TVS would do okay.
@popcorny11
@popcorny11 3 года назад
Actually hilarious. Aside from that, do you think the TVS has to be loaded with 800 film and above to be more versatile due to the f3.5 speed or is that concern mostly unfounded? What was the general “feel” of usability throughout all the different times shooting it? Thanks!
@thehealthpotions

I've shot a little over 500 photos on the contax, all of which were on iso 400 film and below. I'd say unless you're going for specifically handheld night photography without flash, then the contax tvs might not be for you. But if not, then its flash is strong enough in most situations, handheld shots in low light aren't the worse. It's built really nicely, couple it with a nice strap, it does more than what an average p&s can do. Cheers!
@popcorny11
@popcorny11 3 года назад
@@thehealthpotions ok thanks! Am considering a backup premium (w some controls) film p&s for light travel when I don’t wish to carry “photography” gear. I often photograph night scenes because of the lighting/colours but sometimes p&s, even the good ones, tend to produce average results. I’m hoping that this would be good enough without breaking the bank.

Which do you prefer TVS or G1??
@thehealthpotions
@thehealthpotions 3 года назад
Hi! That's a really good question, but both cameras are quite different. I've owned a G1 that was spoilt, so my comments are based on just holding the camera. The G1 looks good. Like really good. But people online complained about its AF. The camera is also bigger than the TVS, and it's definitely not P&S. The TVS is very handy, more compact than the G1. But it is heavy as well for a p&s. Makes you think whether it's worth it to might as well bring the G1 out. Okay tldr; I prefer the TVS. Since for my main cameras, I prefer fully mechanical cameras for full control & reliability, I would pick the TVS to complement my main setup. The TVS is smaller, has a flash, has the ability to "manual" focus. BUT, if you only want 1 camera as your setup. You don't mind an external flash, you want the flexibility of lenses, you want fast shutter speeds and a simpler shooting experience, the G1 is a good selection.
@bernstyles
@bernstyles 2 года назад
Can anyone let me know if a G1 is better than a TVS or TVS 2?
@thehealthpotions
@thehealthpotions 2 года назад
I wouldn't put them in the same category for comparison. It really depends on what you want/need. What's most important to you for taking photos? Size? Weight? Accessibility? G1: Not really a point&shoot Pros: AF, Well built, multiple amazing lenses, more "manual" controls Cons: Bulkier, AF is worse than G2 TVS1&2: Pros: smaller than G1, less bulky, electronic manual focus still available Cons: Zoom lens fragility (at least for tvs 1), glass probably not as sharp as prime G lenses.
