Exquisite blocks, Lisa! I admire your tenacity with the drop spindle, I am trying to use one, and have been a wheel spinner for an obscene number of years (40ish), but the spindle is a whole different philosophy….hope I make it through the learning curve……!! Thanks for sharing your breed studies!
Aw peaches is so sweet! I'm really enjoying your breed tour and I love that you're spinning the samples on a drop spindle. I've spun some nice yarn on drop spindles but I get discouraged because I see everyone whipping through ounces and ounces of fiber on their wheels so fast, but it's inspiring to be reminded that it's not the end of the world to slow down and enjoy a whirl on the spindle here and there.
Hi Nicole, i'm loving the breed study too. I actually prefer spinning on a spindle, its so mindful and peaceful :) I ply on my spinning wheel though. I'm hoping to learn to use the turkish spindle and supported spindle aswell - so much to learn :)
Hello my favorite teacher!!! This video really help me like alls your videos. I’m a new bergère in Quebec, Canada. We have around 25 Shetlands, 1 male Icelandic et around 10 blackface. This is all new for us … I’m happy with my choice of sheer and wool. Tanks you so much !!! Sorry for my English hihi , we are French!!! Love 💗 🐑 It’s very peaceful to listening you.
And yet another super lovely podcast to start my day with. I'll be borrowing that idea of steaming prepared fibre, what a difference it made. Wishing you a lovely Sunday and looking forward to next weeks episode 😊
I absolutely love watching your podcast and always feel inspired by you🫶🏾 Another steaming tip, boil the water before adding the fiber, untwist the fiber, and then put it in for 1 to 3 min. It’s faster and no worries about burning your fiber. I love how the top gets super fluffy 😱 Also no worries about your sweater being done. Remember this is a slow making hobby of ours❤
Thank you, dear friend, for the mention 💞 You can still join me in the sock spin along with handspun you already have 😊 I've referred several people who want to spin for socks on spindles, to your wonderful channel. This was an absolutely fascinating episode, it really was! I was spinning for my socks while I shared a coffee with you this morning ❤
I’ve only been spinning for about 18 months, I’ve been an avid sock knitter for much longer, my biggest dream is to knit a pair of socks from some hand spun, I can’t wait to find out more about your project ❤
Great episode. I love this breed study. I have also found shetland to be quite diverse, especially with a commercial preparation. You don't know what you're going to get. I love seeing Peaches and you playing the piano at the end.
Dear Lisa, thanks again for another video. Interesting, authentic and calming my soul. Peaches is so lovely and your piano playing is so nice. Greetings Gaby from Germany
Enjoyed your podcast this morning! Thank you for sharing all you tips about steaming fiber, shetland info was fascinating, and those fiber locks are so beautiful. Love your sweater...its coming along! Love all those Podcaster you mentioned too! You keep me motivated! Have a Great day crafting!!
Picard!!! Yess it's indeed a must watch especially if you've watched Star Trek earlier on. We used to watch it over dinner when I was a kid. I love the breed studies. I wanted to make a journal of pictures and samples once I got into getting breeds. It's so exciting to watch though!!
Your journal idea is great. Best to get started early on. We are almost at the finally. I used to watch Next Gen reruns all the time. Love that series.
Yes. She has a bit of apricot coloring from her father I think. She’s part poodle. Her fiber doesn’t shed and isn’t very soft (more silky) but maybe I should clip a bit and spin it up into a keepsake. I’ve heard the Samoyed fiber is a lot like angora bunny. Hope you have a good week my friend!
Fascinating to see the transformation of the Shetland top. I’ve heard recommended to soak as well. I will definitely try one method on the next packet! Your blanket is coming along beautifully. 🧶
Wonderful video today. It was so cute when your husband called you. I am in the sockspinalong2023. Hope you can find time to join in. It's fun. I've never made any handspun socks before. I'm using Romney. Thanks Lisa.❄️☃️🐑🐑🐏
Found you recently! Now to go back and catch up on the other breeds! Excited!!love your gentle voice- that sweater is gorgeous and thank you for sharing your cute pup too!
What a wonderful vlog! Thank you so much you have explained something that has been mystifying me, I have a Shetland fleece that I’m processing, it’s got like nepps in it, it looks exactly like one of your samples so I’m guessing it’s ‘rise’ (not sure if that’s how you spell it) I love breed studies, thank you so much again for such a thorough episode, I can’t wait for next week and I’m going to look back at other vlogs. My dream one day is to spin for socks so I am very excited that it’s a thing some people are doing already! I need to fall down this rabbit hole! You have a gorgeous dog, I feel so relaxed listening to you play piano. Thank you for brightening my day no end. Your book looks awesome too!! Best wishes from the north of England. Geraldine ❤
Enjoyable and informative, as always. Whispering Pines is going to be at a fiber fest nearish to me (Tina Turner Knits, Feb 19, Rochester, NY), so I hope to meet her and will mention I heard about her here first. Currently knitting a sweater in Jamieson & Smith jumper weight and loving the Shetland knitting experience. Your convo with hubby sounded exactly like the ones I have with mine!
Loved today’s outro. I really like Einaudi’s work but, much as I love it, his tunes have a bit of an earworm quality for me and they run round my head for days afterwards; so it is just as well that I enjoy them so much! Certain sections of Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man stick with me as well - amongst many others. My beloved bought me the Finnish sock book (completely unprompted, I might add) for Christmas - he did suggest that the first pattern in the book might make a nice present for him, though!!
Hi Lisa, I love spinning on a Turkish spindle and plying on my electric spinner. I love Jen’s super soft Shetland fiber. It is so easy to spin. Can’t wait to see her red ewes deliver this year. She used AI from European Shetlands. Thanks for your podcast. Hi Peaches 🍑
I love your fiber investigations...I learn so much. Can't wait to see what you do with your Icelandic sample. And don't feel bad about not finishing your lopapeysa quite yet. We don't knit and spin because we want instant gratification, right:)
I have some Shetland fleece here from a couple of different sheep. One is from Whispering Pines (super fine, crimpy) and don't remember the source of the other (more the long even length with medium crimp.) One of the nice things about Shetland wool is that it's a 'grabby' wool. Not hard to spin, but the tendency to kind of stick to itself makes it perfect for doing color work. I can't stand knitting with superwash yarns now as they feel way too slick and lifeless to me. After seeing your blocks I ordered the Berlinn pattern. I have been knitting a sample block, and really love the pattern. Thank you for mentioning the Albenacht Knitter on your previous post. I checked him out and subscribed immediately. It's like getting a mini vacation to the Isle of Arran.
Lisa I am just loving your breed study. I also enjoy everything about your podcast. I always look forward to your episodes. I can tell you were a teacher because you explain everything so well.
Thank you for another enjoyable video. I'm currently spinning Sheland at the moment and I think I'll have a go at steaming it too. Thank you for the mini concert. I enjoy your piano playing as much as your spinning. Very gentle and calming.
I love this Winter Breed Study and am enjoying watching the videos, I have been learning to spin, not on a wheel and drop spindle. I am coming along slowly but cannot, for the life of me, get my spindle to spin for more than a couple of seconds, so I am on the Park and Draft method. I should look back at all your videos and see if you have offered any tips!
I appreciate the footage of using a Turkish spindle. I have been considering purchasing one or two. I do have a bit of commercial top Shetland, I will try steaming also!
So I am spinning for socks on a Turkish spindle and for some reason I chain plied what I had spun on another spindle. I think I will be much happier just spinning 3 balls and then plying.
how fun you are moving right along on your bred blanket. I had heard the tip of steaming fleece before but never tried it but I could see the difference it made in the roving. I will try this in the future.
So excited to have discovered your channel and to find you're friends with dearest Cary. Im running away now to find your study on my most loved Icelandics. It is truly humbling to sit in the presence of so much knowledge and experience that you share so freely. Thank you ❤
If you enjoy Stitches in Starlight, I recommend iknitunot, she's mostly a crocheter but recently knitted her first sweater. Very calm videos, and often there's appearances from Riley the cat. Thanks for such a deep look at Shetland! It's such a lovely wool
Your podcast is wonderful! I too love the sheepy smell and feel so much in common with you! Your spinning is just soo soothing and joyful to watch! Thank you 💜
Hi Lisa, I discovered a new podcast that you may be interested in……My Wonderful Kitting Life. The second episode is about weaving in Quebec. Hope that all is well with you.
Shetland is definedly one of my favorite breeds too! Really enjoy your videos, they are so informative and peaceful. Aran weight is still most commonly used sock yarn hear in Finland and Niina's books are so beautiful.
I think it’s one of the pretties knitting books I’ve seen. I like to make socks out if thicker yarn and wear them over thin cotton socks in the colder months.
Oh my goodness, I was sitting here thinking "that's a beautiful piano piece" and was not prepared to find out that you were the one playing! I wanted to play the piano so much when I was young, but I found practicing a musical instrument an intensely lonely experience and just couldn't stick with it. Anyway, this was another enjoyable episode (I was amused that you didn't bother to edit out the phone call), and I'm having fun getting caught up.
Thank you so much. I played when I was young and now have began playing again in my retirement. It’s is a very enriching experience to play. I figure it’s good for my aging brain as well! Take care and have a wonderful day. 💕
I love the breed study and pull out my fleece and fiber sourcebook that you recommended. I am learning soo much and wow the joy of your drop spindle spinning! Again thank you!
Thank you for your chanel I love to watch, the color morrit means mórautt (mó-rautt) wich is mó=the color of moor and rautt is the color red. I really should try to spin that shetland wool I bought and combd 5 years ago.
I’d love to meet you at the Wisconsin sheep and wool festival one of these years. You (and Jillian Eve) have encouraged me to learn to spin and now I know what meditation feels like lol. I’d love to shake your hand ❤
Thank you for another cozy morning from California Bay Area. You are an amazing Teacher. I cozy up with my coffee my yarn and listen to you teach us about all the wool. Ugh so good!! Taking your husbands call was great. It felt so real. As if we were all sitting around the table chatting away. I laughed in the best way🥰. See you next week!
So pleased to see you share again. You inspire me in all things sheep.🐑🐏🧶 I am working my way through a Gotland lamb fleece, Hand carding, spinning, then knitting. It has a vast array of greys through it, and is so soft. I have always wanted to try a Shetland fleece, but we don't have that breed in New Zealand. I really enjoyed listening to you play the piano. Very soothing and gentle😊💖
:) Peaches is so cute! My Dog Skyla is the same way and she needs many walks throughout the day, and she is also protective of my 2 youngest cats Bella and Nightmare who are going to be 1 years old in April of this year. I have Shetland in my Stash that I want to spin right now but currently working on some Canadian Wool.
This time I just held the 2 balls in my hand. You can also put them in 2 little flower pots with the hole at the bottom upside down near the wheel. If I create a 2 ply ball I do the same. Just spin from the ball. Hope this helps!
I love the idea of your breed study blanket. I have something like 30 samples of different breeds and when I finally get around to spinning it I might borrow your idea of a blanket. I wish there was a way to mark them but having the experience of spinning then knitting each one will be very informative and interesting.
I picked up some simple cloth ribbon to write the names of the breeds. I’m cutting them to size and sewing them on the back. I got that idea from a viewer.
Hello, Nice to meet you soon! Dear Lisa Baker! I thought that your spindles and spinnings were most beautiful in the video. And your many thread works are always most beautiful and better! And You shown me best variety best videos. Thus I always thank you for your videos and spindles! You are a best spindler and spinner! To Dear Lisa!🌼!🧡!❤!
Hi Lisa! And hi, Lisa’s hubby & Peaches 😃 Thanks for showing that sock book, I had seen it online & was wondering what it was like. I see quite a few socks in there that are tempting. The Aran weight one is a must try!
Hi Susan! Cary said it would be ok to knit from already spun yarn. So I am going to have a look at my hands spun stash. How’s your sock spinning going?
After watching your videos I been looking up the bread of the sheep. For 💡 a good idea to make a juernal of your samples with a card. I found a belt or scarf hanger with 5 rings. I have been putting my samples on there. They are in little plastic bags, showing the fiber a single and 2ply around the card name of fiber sheep bread. 🐑... I have someone friend of the family to show me how to knit.
Did you say the second square that you knit is made with Bond? Did you do a breed study with this breed? I’ve been interested in learning more about it and didn’t see a video in the list that had that name in the title. Thank you so much for your informative episodes!
My Bond sample is not part of this breed study. But I do intend to do an episode on Bond and Corriedale since they have similar origins and are closely related. Thank you!
Oh yes, the old "not going to buy any more fleeces until I've knit some sweaters" routine…I know that one! (I have to admit, some of your recent and not-so-recent videos showing such beautiful fleeces have reignited my passion for raw wool and contributed to my acquisition of more fleeces than is perhaps wise.) I'm really looking forward to your continued breed studies!
What another wonderful episode. Of course I love all the spinning and fiber talk but the birds and your piano playing is equally as lovely. Knitting a sweater takes the time it takes. No worries about not having it completed. I knit on a sweater and enjoyed a cup of tea while watching. What a lovely hour for me.
I’m a shetland breeder and am always impressed with how well you know these little sheep! The fact that you mentioned foula sheep being different shows me you’ve done your homework. Love to see you work with wool from these lovely little sheep!
Lisa, thank you so much for your time and inspiration in creating these videos! I absolutely love learning along with you about the Breed Study!! Thanks for inviting us to join you on your Fiber Adventure! Karla 🌺
If you're looking for more podcasts, Pardon My Stash is a fun knitting cast with four ladies that laugh through most of the show. It's very much like having coffee with friends and I find it really lifts the spirits.
Your sweater is so pretty. You’ll get there. Your breed study has been very interesting. And I’m always so inspired watching you spin. I have a wheel, but am inspired by you to try out a supported spindle. I’m watching several of the podcasts you mentioned. I would love to do a retreat at Andrew’s center on Arran. 💕
Awwww I was taken aback and brought to tears. Thank you, Lisa. Thanks, too, for your thorough survey and honest representation of the complexities of Shetland! Lovely piano playing … think of me playing “Sheep May Safely Graze” on my flute for David’s mother’s memorial service this coming Saturday ❤️🎶 I’ll get those CD’s mailed soon.
I’ll be thinking of you on Saturday and every day. 🙏. You can’t go wrong with Bach. 🎵 I am so sorry for your loss. I’m sure David is singing to his mom in heaven. I can’t express how grateful I am that you allowed me to use his music. I often listen as I knit, spin and paint. Take care.
