Kink isn't new. In fact - as the academic Esmé Louise James has found - what we now call 'kinky sex' has been a part of human life as far back as history books can take us. There is historical evidence of Kinky Desire from the ancient Romans and Greeks, to our favourite modern philosophers and writers - so why is kink still shrouded in shame? And can social platforms like TikTok help?
Esmé Louise James is best known for her irreverent lecture series on TikTok, Kinky History, which boasts a following of over 2 million people from around the world. She has produced a range of poetry, short-stories, and non-fiction articles and in 2020, she was listed in the Top 30 Emerging Writers by SBS Australia. A PhD candidate at the University of Melbourne, her thesis investigates the emerging genre of the pornographic novel in the eighteenth-century. The amount of negativity on this video is unreal. The content of the video is in the title. If you don't want to hear it don't watch? If you find her annoying don't watch? She's educating people about our history. Just because you find it offensive doesn't mean it's not the truth or educational. Stop being so negative and simply move on.

I did not expect to be very impressed by this TED talk, but you proved me wrong. I could listen to a full series about this topic. I like the history part more than the part about tiktok to be honest, but I would love to hear more about how and why these things are hidden away and shushed, especially in a historic perspective. I love history. Also, you're an amazing speaker, Esme, I was immediately hooked.

Seeing these desires as unnatural, as shameful and deviant, I think that's the wrong way to look at them. What people do with other concenting adults, is nobodies business. It's a part of being human, and should be sought to be understood. Kink has been a part of the human story for a long time, I don't think keepjng it shrouded in secrecy or demonising people for their kinks is the answer.

I adore Esme and love her joyful energy. I very much enjoy her unique way of talking and teaching us about all the kinks and fetishes (the taboos she's trying to break) from history and of the historical figures as I follow her instagram page. Also, I am currently reading her book, Kinky History.It's a wonderful read. I don't know whether she has made the audible version of the book or not, I would love to listen to her reading the book.

You have to be 13 to be a tiktok user and there are age restrictions on content. If kids are lying about their age or parents are letting them use their accounts that is on them. The internet itself is full of information at the fingertips. RU-vid has content about historical things of this nature. Those with children need to monitor what they are doing on the internet and teach them internet safety. If kids are being properly monitored this is a non issue.
