Soft White Underbelly interview and portrait of Leslie Vass, a man who at the age of seventeen received a twenty year sentence for a robbery he did not commit. Now, at 62 he still fights to remove that false conviction from his record. Leslie is currently living in a suburb of Atlanta and is still looking for employment.

What a warm and gentle person this guy is. The fact he was incarcerated for a crime he didn't commit and continued to educate himself in law and helped other inmates get their cases overturned and reduced, it speaks volumes of his character. My heart goes out to Leslie, I hope his life is fulfilling from here on out.

For those who don’t know who Len Bias was the second overall pick in the 1986 draft and was arguably on track to be ‘better than Jordan’ but died due to a drug overdose.The fact this man was able to beat him two times in a row at nearly 30 is insane. This man was robbed of his life and full potential for NOTHING I cannot see how he remains so positive and mild mannered. My prayers go out to him.

Len Bias died when I was a kid, but I always remembered his story. About a decade later when I dabbled in recreational drugs, I never wanted to try coke. It scared me to death, because supposedly it was the first time he ever did it. It wasn't the only reason, I had heard about the addiction part as well, but until you're addicted to something, you don't understand what addiction really is. So the fear of death was more concrete for me at the time.

Seems weird that has been no follow up. This Man’s life is stolen from him on a daily basis, it’s not just something that happened in the past and it’s over. Fucking sad that we celebrate this country at all if something like this is happening and only person that ever got this story out to a wider audience is this YT channel. Where’s the Dateline/48 hours/20/20 special covering this? And if it happened to him you know it’s happened to many other people. The use of Confidential Informants in “law enforcement” is very disturbing. I’ve seen cases where they let a CI get away with very bad crimes (up to and including murder) all so that can bust a low level drug dealer. We get a follow up with the “black hat” hacker like he’s some paragon of morality, but this man’s story is dropped?? WTF!

Listening to his story has left me in tears and shaking with impotent rage. His entire life has been taken from him...who here believes that no one, NOT ONE PERSON could get the WRONGFUL CONVICTION removed from his record? His life story is a perfect example of the systemic racism that was designed to do exactly what it did: steal a life that was full of promise and also destroy the lives of his children. I am so tired people...the hardest part of all of this is not that nobody understood his plight,. it is that they understood and did not care.

Dearest Leslie, You are such a strong, good man. Your years of wrongful incarceration could have made you bitter and filled with rage. Instead, they grew you into the good man you are. In prison, you learned patience, forgiveness of a sort, and you learned to accept life on life's terms. You are not a victim. You are someone who overcame a horrific injustice. You are someone that the system could not crush. You are a man with an epic cautionary tale of the system's injustice and how one man was able to withstand the cruelty of those supposed to mete out justice but tragically did not. Your story, sir, could be made into a film for the world to marvel at your strength and how you took the years the locust ate and let them make you into a giant of man not just in size but in character. It's funny, I'm a Caucasian woman and I never really experienced the racism because I was brought up very open minded and to love the person, not the color of skin. I met a black gentleman that I really clicked with and we started dating ( previously only had white/ European boyfriends. The thing that really opened my eyes was how much we got pulled over in his car for absolutely no reason. He would laugh it off, he's like it's because I was DWB. I'm like what do you mean? Driving while black...it's not right, and I hope to God things change. This man should have gotten millions in compensation. For him and his family to come. I agree
@tundrawomansays5067
@tundrawomansays5067 4 года назад
The End Of Me What’s equally sad is compensation for the wrongly convicted is frankly, a pittance and-at least where I am-capped. How do you compensate a person for the life you stole from him? *When you expropriate decades from a person, you have taken that which can never be restored.* I truly wish people would understand there are more wrongly convicted than we want to believe and a paucity of attorneys who can assist them-there’s no $ in working on these cases which often drag on for years if not decades, Yk? And to those few who are truly committed, these cases become all encompassing, you become a member of their family. You have a professional responsibility, a personal commitment and a grinding reality you’re chipping away at day after day while they’re languishing day after day. Your own family inevitably becomes short-changed and not surprisingly, leave. Can’t blame them. It’s a lonely road for all of us on either side of the bars....

I almost stopped watching this story several times because the more he shared the more heartbreaking it became. Wrongful convictions happen too often in the black community. His best years were taken away without any regard. It's sad to say that if you have black sons, brothers, family members you carry this fear daily. I know I do. I'm fearful every day for my son since he was a teen. He's an adult now, but I'm fearful every time he leaves his home or out shopping, driving etc. Black men are always stopped & questioned because they supposedly fit the description of some other black person when they don't at all. Mr Vass I applaud you for educating yourself in law. I'm happy that you've done great things to be a great man. I like that you're so articulate & have the best memory about everything. Maybe you could start a nonprofit organization that many of us would contribute to for you to follow your passion to help others. I hope that one day soon the governor of Maryland or someone will do what's needed to clear your record. I wish you nothing but the best. God bless you sir 💙🙇🏽‍♀️ I want to see an update of Mr Leslie Vass hopefully soon.

That is EXACTLY where the problem "lie's" ...(pun intended) the core of this problem in America is tainted >> The system is not utilized as it was once intented to be! those that have witnessed injustice ,corruption and experienced it can agree.... those that have "herd" about it or seen/read about it on the news can only offer their opionion, which means nothing, in comparison to those that have witnessed or have had their lives changed forever. the true american dream can in the blink of an eye become a nightmare for anyone....including most regretably , the innocent.

This is HORRIFYNG, he was victimized time and time again and then his children suffered by wrongfully being placed in foster care. He is owed so much more than the measly payouts he got when exonerated. His life was ruined yet he kept rising above, with such a humble and kind spirit. This reminds me of a new TV series called For Life - Executive Produced by Fifty Cent and Q Ball Executive Produced by Kevin Durant. Maybe he can reach out to them, a movie needs to be made about him. Mind boggling and crushing to find out the outcome of the informant, the true criminal.

It helps to highlight that this is just par for the course, in the U.S so-called justice system. Absolutely deplorable actions by all these officers of the court. And it seems to have only gotten worse in the years since this gentleman's wrongful conviction and incarceration. I'm encouraged by the recent groundswell of movement for Black Lives Matter, and the growing awareness about these deeply systemic racial disparities and injustices. Keep up the good work in sharing your story, and others, Mr. Vass. Personal accounts of injustice have such power and gravity, especially when told by people who possess such dignity. Speaking from EXPERIENCE and PERSONALLY knowing Leslie , I beg to differ. He in fact 100% committed the crime (attempted murder on his wife) that led to his children being placed into foster care. A cohearsed fraudulent testimony from myself and a sibling of mines, along with the fact that the State of Maryland did not want to mess up again is what allowed this man to walk free. What my father experienced emotionally, mentally, and physically while incarcerated for 10 years, is what my siblings and I endured throughout childhood. My brother D'Amante and I (Andrea) the WORSE. I say this all to say, let's normalize advocating for family members of victims who were wrongfully convicted. Furthermore, STOP believing everything that you read/hear.
