I share my experiences as a Diabetic who does endurance sports.
I share the my learning; the good, the bad, and the ugly from training for and completing endurance events as a Type 1 diabetic.
If you are a diabetic and a nervous or even scared to start going long distances, then fear not, I am walking proof that with a little planning and a sensible approach to increasing your training you can most certainly do whatever endurance race you have in mind. If its long distance triathlon, endurance running, centuro cycling events. YOU CAN DO IT!!
Having currently completed several 70.3 Ironman races, almost done a 140.6 Ironman (it was cancelled due to the Corona outbreak), several long cycling races, and long running races I have learned a great deal about how to train and race as a diabetic which I will share with you all here.
I am now half way through my season and have had to switch back to training for a 70.3 and set myself up for the Bolton full distance Ironman in July 2021.
Your channel is everything Iv been looking for! As a fellow T1D it’s frustrating finding endurance based athletes who are diabetic. I know you don’t make videos as much but thank you for all of this amazing info. Training for my first marathon in April!
Silly question, but this item only installs xdrip on my Garmin, but how do I connect this to my libre on my phone as this shows no details on how to do this if required.
Hello guys, Miao miao 3 has just arrived..! I would like to purchase a smartwatch as well, in order to get my blood sugar measurements much easier all the time.. Is there something i should be aware of? Are there any compatibility issues with any brand or i could go and purchase any smartwatch i like??
All nice but honestly the problem is not uploading the App on Garmin but the sensor you have applied on Freestyle Libre to get the reading on your watch. Could you please tell me how to get it. Many thanks! :D
Any idea if you can get the Libre Freestyle 2 data to display on a garmin data field? I just got the Ultrahuman tracker which uses the Libre Freestyle 2 connected to their App. But can figure out if if he displayed on garmin field
How to get your glucose reading ONLY ON A GARMIN watch. This would have been a better description. Nowadays most people wear other popular watches and for some reason programmers don't come up with an app for other watches.
Only for the initial purchase, about $100, then it's free to use, no subscription. Although this week I have started using the libre 2 and got that using the xdrip app without the need for the miaomiao, it's tricky to set up but once it's working it seems to be the same outcome...
I am considering purchasing a Garmin Instinct 2 which has a monochrome screen (no color) will that impact my ability to manage my blood sugar using the app?
I have a Fenix 5S plus garmin, use an Apple phone and I cannot see my BG readings after following this video. I'm getting a error -400 on my watch.....any help please?
My blucon has a provision of initial set up of readings on phone and then I can switch connectivity to watch and get readings, trends. I can see real time effect of food/exercise/and medicines on my sugars
Hi, not from this application unfortunately, there might be other watch apps out there that I haven't found yet that do it. If anyone finds one I would love to hear about it
Hi and thank you for this elaborated video! Is it possible to receive blood sugar reading on the Garmin watch without having a phone in-between the Libre2+MM ? Hard to imagine swimming with a watch & a phone... What does my Garmin watch need? Only bluetooth? Or does it need NFC as well? thank you, Pieter
Unfortunately you have to have the phone in the middle so you can't get glucose monitoring whilst swimming. even if you used some of the watches which do not need a phone, Bluetooth doesn't work underwater anyway so any CGM or FGM combo will never work whilst swimming.
Thanks for sharing all the great tips and experiences. As a T1D I'm using refined sugar in my energy drink during endurance sport (road cycling 3 - 10 hours) to keep my blood sugar levels stable. I find this easier to microdose with regularly and also easier on the stomach. As long as my bloodsugar is under control could refined sugar still has a negative long side effect on my diabetes? A lot of endurance athletes talk about hi carb lo fat plant based and tend to consume a lot of refined sugars.
Thanks for commenting, now I'm not a doctor so anything I say to your question is based purely on my personal experience. Using refined sugars doesn't concern me at all, ultimately it is just an energy source and when you are using that energy up it isn't a problem. I asked my Endo a similar question and she wasn't concerned either, interestingly, I went to the dentist to get a painful tooth looked at and he asked about my diet, when I explained he expressed an anecdotal increase in endurance sportsmen arriving at his door which he thought might be due to all the refined sugar which sits on your teeth for 8, 10, 18 hours at a time regularly which intuitively makes sense to me.... He is the only person who has raised a concern to me so far about my diet.
@@endurodiabetic9414 thanks for the fast reply! Yes my thought as well, as long as I'm using all the energy I consume and the blood sugar has a stable level, everything should be fine. I'm just trying to find a confirmation that all the sugars and the glucose metabolism doesn't stress or harm my body but so far the main concern I've heard is about the teeth... I'm trying to wash it down with a second bottle of only water and xylitol chewing gums.
Do you take your basal first thing in the morning or how long before an endurance training do you cut down? I take mine 5pm, so might work to cut down the eve before longer ride?
Apologies I missed this, I take only 1 basal last thing before bed, I have just been on a trial and error journey to find what works best for me, I used to do 2 basal per day but I found it was just too much variation when dosing up and down
@@endurodiabetic9414 Have you ever tried taking your phone in a waterproof tow buoy for open water swims? I presume as long as there's a bluetooth signal should be ok.
Really good to see the glucose graph with your notes about where you took the insulin and why, combining with the sports you did. Another important layer is the food you ate, how much control do you have over you blood glucose by controlling your food and reduce the insulin? but maybe reducing insulin is not a target for you? sorry for this questions, as I am not taking insulin so I do not know but I am curious.
I have played around with a LCHF diet for a few months and basically got down to using 60% of my "normal" insulin volumes. But then I started to notice that I would ride high blood sugars at night because the Basel levels were so low. But if I increase the Basel I have to eat carbs. I personally don't feel the need to keep going low carb, especially when doing long distance events and training, carbs aren't the devil they are painted to be at the minute. I find the best way to control my blood sugar is a moderate approach to everything, don't go extreme with any diet.
@@endurodiabetic9414 thanks for that detail. I hope to be able to learn more about how my body react in terms of glucose / sports / energy / carvings / bloating as you did mention when you wanted to run fast but you could not because you did eat to much carbs on a small period while running. Could you please elaborate a bit more about being fat burning? You did mention about it a bit on the video. Even if you do not do low carb, do you want to be in fat burn mode for your sports you do? I think you mention in a video that zone 2 sports are good for diabetics, to avoid rising the glucose as other hard zones.
Do i have to have my phone on me as well as my watch? or can i get all of the apps in place and in order then go run away form from home with nothing but my watch and still be getting accurate readings?
Hi. This was knowledgable. I've been trying to find for a vid similar to yours that teaches the ideas in this RU-vid video. 👩⚕️ 👍Your explanation is similar to the channel of Dr. Ethan. Dr Ethan's videos are helpful and I actually learned a lot for exams! He is the most knowledgable med student on RU-vid and he talks about vaccines. I recommend you watch his channel out and give the Dr a like! 👉 #DoctorEthan
After twelve years of barefoot running my cartilage is now in smithereens; the worst mistake I ever made. I can hardly walk now never mind run; there was no build up, no pain, no indication; after a good run I found the next day I couldn't straighten my right leg and that was it, when knees go that's it. When I told the sports surgeons about barefoot running they just shook their heads and said your not the first and you won't be the last if this fad doesn't stop.
I'ts a real shame to hear that, I hope you find a solution to sort your knee out. It's a very divisive subject with very strong opinions, evidence, and studies both for and against it. Unfortunately there are many cases of people facing the same issues as you when they've run in supportive trainers for years as well, that's one of the reasons I wanted to give it a go, to "see for myself" because there are lots of opinions both ways... and my thought is that if I document it people can at least see what to expect when they start out if they have made that choice.
