Here’s my thought process on Palpatine’s return and death that lets me enjoy the movie and sleep at night: The Sith Eternal retrieves his body and used their awful dark Sith magic and science to keep him alive (the giant chunk of the Death Star that Palpatine was housed in survived the explosion, why not his corpse as well). Sith followers are supposed to be spread across the galaxy (since that’s what I can assume from the Bestoon Jedi killer and General Pryde). The ability of moving your evil spirit from one body to another is pretty dark and evil, so I assume it truly involves the Sith Eternal’s assistance (the chanting and whatnot) for it to succeed. When the temple is destroyed from the attack on Palpatine, all of the Eternal are wiped out by destruction and do not exist to complete the ritual. I also take the idea that Rey is not striking Palpatine down in anger or revenge, and is only defending herself (with two sweet lightsabers) and so it was a deflection of super force lightning (like a super kaioken?) that wiped out Palpatine. Finally! If I’m wrong about all of this, I still believe that even if it was possible for Palpatine to pass into Rey after his death, then he couldn’t do it because the battle and power from the fight actually killed Rey, allowing for no vessel for Palpatine to pass into, and then just finally faded away. A lot of mental gymnastics, but I still like the movie. Was a lot of fun a second time once I knew all of the story beats and scene changes that were going to happen.
