The 1970's were Zepplelin's decade. They filled the void when Hendrix, Joplin, and Morrison died, and their run ended with the death of John Bonham in 1980, but their music and sound lives on. They've always been my favorite band, and always will be.
Yes. Hendrix-Joplin-Morrison died, Preasley hit his old age, Beatles disbanded. Zeppelin had tight schedule, spreading rock around europe and world. Someone said that they were maybe band who had longest travel-distance on that time.
Jimmy was about 12 when his family moved into a new house, and in the house was an acoustic guitar and Jimmy picked it up n never put it down.. He would even take it to school with him, only to have them take it away but, he would get it back after school. He took a few lessons n after that he just self taught himself, learning by ear.. He is a brilliant player and man, and even when he was young in the business, he did things to ensure that he would have full control over every aspect of the band, record labels and all.. He thought differently than other musicians, needing everything to go his way.. He started Zeppelin and took them higher than they could have imagined.. Rock on Jimmy Page! You are a legend!! 🎶🤘🎵
Yeah he is smart. I think early on in school he talked about becoming some kind of engineer. There are a couple of Black n white vies on yt from when he was 15-17 or so.
This is why I love it when it rains, also brings me back to old days and good times, amazing how a song can transport you . This never gets old .Led Zeppelin !
I can play most of this song in this EADADE tuning. It amazes me there are some pretty tough parts where Jimmy Page isn't even looking at his guitar. Believe me this song is not like playing 3 bar chords. It's so easy to hit a wrong string in this song and flub it up and lose composure, and I have never heard Mister Page flub up this song in a live recording. Hats off to you sir.
Another thing that makes this version amazing is that there is no echo (delay effect) in this so I believe the sound is taken from the sound board (before the effects were added that the audience did hear.) The delay effect could help cover a small mistake. Listen to the Knebworth version of this song you can hear the echo as with TSRTS. I like listening to this version for the lack of delay.
This is what I dont get about Jimmy. He can play the rain song which has extremely difficult chord shapes and play it perfectly without missing a note live, but then in that same exact concert he'll play an extremely sloppy solo. Listen to Black Dog from this same knebworth concert, probably the worst solo hes ever played live. But then, on that same night, he also goes on to play an amazing Achilles last stand solo. Its strange how much his playing varies song to song on even the same nights during the later days of zep. Having said that, I still love his playing even on his off nights when he was wasted/high. Greatest guitarist ever
Billy4269 yeah I've noticed the same. Maybe it's due to muscle memory and songs like Achilles he'd been playing a lot recently and hadn't touched Black Dog in a while and went in complacent and over confident. Another factor could be throughout the night his booze, coke and/or heroin is kicking in hard at different points. Maybe we should do some detective work and check out the set lists on live shows post '75 (after he started the H) and see if he plays sloppy after Moby Dick or No Quarter (Bonzo and Jones solos) when Jimmys had a "bathroom break". Imagine trying to play while having an orgasm. Well I myself am a recovering H/opoid addict and that's damn near accurate. All speculation but I bet im onto something.
Always enthralled just watching these four men. I could actually hate their music and still watch them for their sheer brilliance. This is where they excel even over the Beatles and Stones.
@@birsay123 when he was 21 years old that might have been true. But he evolved into his own style. I love Marriott . Loved Small Faces and Humble Pie were great at least when Frampton was still in the band. But Plant wasn't imitating anyone by 1973.
This song and this version are a complete masterpiece. The way they do it live each and every time different is what makes them THE GREATEST ROCK BAND of all time. It was not possible to replace Bonzo. Not even his son Jason can do it. I played this song while waiting for my bride to walk down the aisle. The HOH version. People talk about they were through at this point DINOSAURS what a joke. I Believe they were stronger than ever and would have evolved into yet another phase. PEACE LOVE LED ZEPPELIN
I matters not how many times I listen .... I am just fixed and drawn in to this incredible song an all of Zeps music. Jimmy Page is not only brilliant, he is the greatest!!
I've never seen this performance of this song before. Great version, even if it's raw, I love it! '79 was the year I discovered Zeppelin. I was 13. Plant's voice is not quite what it used to be but after his son died 2 years prior there probably was a lot of drinking and heavy smoking so it makes sense his voice can't reach the high notes that year.
Say what you want about LZ live. Jimmy could be very loose. True. Heroin fouled up some of his playing. True. Sometimes his improvisations were off the mark. True. And with all that said, he is still the greatest rock guitar player ever. He went places NO other player even tried, either out of fear or lack of ability. He could do it all and was sometimes the first one to do it. So many subtle tricks he used that unless you are a guitar player, you don't even know he is doing them. I was watching Achillies Last Stand recently and I have seen it a hundred times. But I never noticed him doing thumb pull offs! It was so perfect. So quick. Simply the Best!
You can't make magic if you don't take chances. Unfortunately that means not all the chances you take will make magic. But I'd have it no other way. Nice post.
His rawness is one of the best things about it. And, he was fearless about his rawness. He chose not to hide behind multiple studio takes or the safe prescribed solo. He went for it all the time and you got it all. And by listening, even the "mistakes" are beautiful in that you can hear where he was going........................or at least some of us can.
@@buschovski1 I'm with you! I've played for about 40 and still find this guy amazing. Glad I am not alone as far as playing for a long time and still being impressed.
This song makes me cry,.it's so elegant, such a great passion, lies within, Almost as if too good to be true. Oh my darling,..are you true,....,. I THINK I JUST STUMBLED ON A NEW PASSION........HONEY, YOU GIVE SUCH INSPIRATION,
Compositionally and creatively Jimmy Page was rock's greatest purveyor, maybe that's not the right word, but his music was colorful, dynamic and descriptive. You can put the Beatles and Floyd in there if you like that's about where it stands. Bands that can make incredible albums and blow your socks off in concert are fairly rare.
The day when I learned to play this with the proper tuning , and in the key of A like they played it here ,was a big day for me ! To hear this beautiful piece coming out of my amp ,with the effects Jimmy used ,was pure joy ! Thanks Jimmy !
2 areas where Page really separates himself from the pack as a guitarist is Songwriting and versatility. Sure he played sloppy live here and there. Never was as fast or clean as certain others... But I'd like to see Hendrix, Clapton, Beck, SRV, Duane, Eddie, Vai, Blackmore, Richards, Perry, Slash, Angus, Wylde, Rhoades, Iommi, May, Gilmour, Wood on and on and on.... I'd like to see any of them A. compose such a ballad, and... B. Play it so beautifully..... Some might do one or the other but none do both. There's only one Jimmy FN Page!!
Amen!! I agree 1000%. Only someone with Jimmy's fire and passion could write a song like this. I love all the axemen you've named, but in my opinion, none of them are the equal of James Patrick Page.
Thanks to George Harrison who told them that the only problem with them is they haven't written a ballad. Now here we are listening to this 'large scale' ballad. Blows us away.
agree with u..and also he experimented with alot of genres excluding jazz....shows you he wasn't a one dimensional thinker and wanted to expand his horizons...and boy did he expand !! 😃
im learning guitar late in life , and I'm working on this particular song right now . I love how revisiting all these old songs makes me feel so much more now that I'm playing guitar. man do I ever appreciate these songwriters now and really none will compare to Jimmy Page. he's got to be the master at making people feel
This is so great and probably my favorite zep song. However I just dont think I have ever seen the facial expressions on Jimmy's face like this ever. I mean every guitar player has their expressions along with Jimmy but on this occasion he almost seems to be in extreme pain. Maybe he is fighting the addiction of those days and trying his damnedest to play this great song the best he possibly could.
Basically we have the sum if the parts are and were much greater than each individual. Granted they are extremely talented musicians and have passed the test of time and time again as we went from 8 tracks to albums to cassettes and to cds and now the magic of digital media at our fingertips what a great time to be alive!!! Ed
Drugs are having an affect on jimmy's execution and performance in this song, but no one should question the amazing song writing ability it takes to write a master piece like this.
My dad figured out how to play this song in standard tuning, back when all he had was records. No pausing, no rewinding or pitch correct slowing it down... I've always thought he was a legend for doing that. I learned to play it in the actually tuning that Jimmy uses and man it's a fun song to play.
That’s impressive. I actually figured out black mountainside in standard, of course it didn’t sound right. Then I realized it was open tuning, so I relearned it in open D. Hah! Then I realized that it wasn’t open tuning it was dadgad. My version was close enough so I didn’t learn it yet again. Things are so easy to figure out with RU-vid now. And no fumbling with almost but not quite tunings. Thinking about figuring this one out but dang not sure I’m up for all that tuning every time I want to play it.
@@tubytootoo so also here’s another trick for ya… studio page plays it starting with the drop D on the low E… Now LIVE he plays it in a different key. The low E stays and E. So, you gotta crank your uuuh B way up to a D, and then your G to an A, but then boom, you’re in the tuning that he uses live (at least when he played it back to back with Song Remains, I can’t verify if he used that tuning as well in later tours. My guess is that he played it like that because it was quicker to get back into standard tuning for stairway. I’m not sure though that’s just my theory
