A common oil leak on this engine is from the oil pump. The O-ring gets hard and then breaks. This will leak oil at a rate of 1-2 drops per second. Timing belt has to be removed. As well as a timing belt idler pully.

Thanks for the video. My son’s 97 Camry recently started dripping oil and narrowed down to this area. Will be purchasing the seal and o-ring kit.

I have had 2 toyota camry 2 2s and both have leaked oil from the oil pump gasket. It is best to fix it as soon as it starts as it can get very bad and lose alot of oil. My second car has just had this job done and it is a good idea to change the timing belt, water pump, auxilary belts, crank shaft seal at the same time.

You neglected to add information about the bolt length on the oil pump there's two bolts that are of different length and you don't want to mix them up it would be helpful to have a piece of cardboard to place the bolts in a pattern so you'll go back in the correct order I'm told it's possible to damage the oil pump housing if they get mixed up

I just developed a similar oil leak in my Toyota 1998 I know the valve cover leak down the back but I noticed recently it now leaks when the car is running drips from the same area and I could see the oil after cleaning coming down from the top the oil pan I think this is what’s going on

Sadly my car was fine yesterday and just walked out to this problem this morning. Now it looks like I will have to take it to my mechanics house and leave it for the week. So he can get to it when he can. 😢🙏🏻

Hey great video.. but will I have to mess with the timing belt itself, Or just remove the cover and replace the gasket. I have no timing belt experience at all.
@Steve4x4
@Steve4x4 3 года назад
Yes the Timing belt has to come off.

@@Steve4x4 so can i do this myself or will I need special tools and knowledge to put it back together. I've done other car repairs but never a timing belt.. let me know what u think..

@@timfowler7107 there is no way I can answer that. I have to be honest about this. I dont know your skill level. The tools that you own, or what service information you have at hand. Timing belt is the one item that you dont get 2nd chance if you make am mistake. My advice to you is read the service manual and make the assessment. Only you know what your capabilities are. Advice: if you do take on that t-belt, take your time, and use white out to highlight the timing alignment marks.

@@Steve4x4 wow.. thank you sooo much.. what u said helped me more than you'll know... That being said I will at least get an estimate to see what itll cost. If it's to expensive then I'll try to tackle it myself. Dont be surprised if I call on you for help..🤔.lol.. and thank you.. you're the best!!!

@@Steve4x4 The 5sfe is an non interference engine so if you get the timing wrong it's unlikely to cause damage

I wonder if you put RTV in the area that breaks to add extra reinforcement would help with long term durability?
@Steve4x4
@Steve4x4 2 года назад
I dont know.. I mean Toyota paid engineers to come up with that design. RTV would been cheaper to use and assemble but they went with a formed O-ring for a reason.
@ankersman

How did you keep the new o-ring in when putting the oil pump back together? Mine keeps slipping out. The depth of the groove is very shallow.
@Steve4x4
@Steve4x4 3 года назад
there is a product called gasket cinch... made by Edelbrock... it's an adhisive. I use that to contain gaskets. you can ask your local auto parts store for something like that.

@@Steve4x4 Thanks Steve. I was considering using spray on adhesive but probably not good for rubber. Your suggestion much better.

Do you have to reinstall the oil pump in any particular fashion? I noticed a arrow on one of the impeller fingers.
@Steve4x4

As far as I can remember that pump only goes on one way.

Steve P. Do you have a video or any info on removing the camshaft pulley to replace the camshaft seal? I’m trying to find a good way to remove the bolt without the pulley spinning backwards.
@Steve4x4
@Steve4x4 3 года назад
@@brettconv83 if you are referring to the two piece camshaft gear..its been many many years since I did one. If my memory is right, I believe there are threaded holes that u can run a bolt through it to lock the two pieces together. If referring to the camshaft its self. Then the valve cover comes off. There you should see a hex for a wrench. Another way is to use a rag wrapped around the camshaft and use vice grips to hold the camshaft. With the vice grips aganst the head casting.

The arrows have to point at each other, but all the way across the rotor (from the opposite sides.)
@brianturnbull9248
@brianturnbull9248 Год назад
@@Spiritof_76 Haynes manual says that the little triangle etched on the driven rotor faces to the outside of the car when installing. The other rotor, called the drive rotor, is fixed to the shaft, so the etched triangle only goes in one way. As far as them facing each other from opposite sides, I doubt that is necessary because I suspect that position changes as they rotate.

So the RTV gasket on timing cover doesn't keep the oil pump leak from escaping out timing cover? Just wondering. Would it be possible for the oil pump to have the leak but to have the leak to be contained inside the timing cover?
@Steve4x4
@Steve4x4 2 года назад
No, cause the last thing you want on a timing belt is oil. So at the very bottom of the timing cover is a channel to allow oil to escape. Oil degrades the rubber on the timing belt.
