9 yrs since the last timing was done but only 20k of so. Requested a quote from a shop to do that with oil pump o ring and gasket and they said $1700. Another shop refused to do oil pump stuff and said if it not leaking to not touch it. Lol. $1200 or so from them. But why would I want to pay you again to go in once it breaks free. Stupid shops. The timing part scares me a little. I've done all sorts of work on cars just never timing. It looks really easy from the videos so I may get OEM stuff and do it myself. My biggest concern was lining things up right and getting the old seals out of the crank and cam. Thanks for a great video. My 2000 still going strong with 236k.

I like how it's made for the person who kinda already know what they're doing but just needs to make sure they see where all the bolts are and what to expect as they pull off components. The pump shouldn't NEED the additional sealant, but having just gone through this, will do the same (but less than what you showed). I've found that the replacement gaskets are often smaller than the original ones and leak even when new. Further, the gaskets can dry out in the original packaging (the one I just purchased in 2024 had a date on the package from 2008!). So...additional gasket maker for me in addition to the ring rubber gasket. Last, recommend verifying that the oil leak at the pump is solved PRIOR to putting the timing belt covers (2), P/S belt, A/C belt, and crankshaft pulley on (need to install the timing belt, of course). Otherwise you will be doing all of this again if the pump still leaks after your repair. Torque for the 10mm bolts on the pump is low (76 in-lbs).
@reneneron2971
@reneneron2971 27 дней назад
And, yes, you can run the 5SFE engine without the crankshaft pulley on for testing purposes...it is not a harmonic balancer.

How did you remove harmonic balancer and how did you put it back?
@madmikesgarage4861
@madmikesgarage4861 2 года назад
I used a battery powered impact gun to remove the bolt. I had to use a balancer puller to get it off the the crank. You can put the balancer back on by hand and then just torque the bolt. You may get lucky and be able to take the balancer off by hand once you get the boat out but mine was froze a little bit.

Is the deep groove all around the oil pump shaft normal? I see the replacement oil pump shaft doesn't have this deep groove.
@madmikesgarage4861
@madmikesgarage4861 Год назад
If the deep groove is where the outer seal rides, it may have caused it. I wouldn't think it should be there.

I don't know if this comment will help anyone, but occasionally you'll find that the nut that holds the oil pump gear is hard to take off, even with an impact. I'd suggest that before you remove the timing belt you get in there with an impact and get it loose. Then tighten by hand until you can get the oil pump out.

Gates is doing something yukky that people who care need to know about. If you buy the Gates H2o pump kit that comes with the tensioner and idler pulleys, they used to only come with Japanese Koyo bearings (the best) which is what Toyota OEM is, but now they sneak in a Chinese bearing, like they did with the kit shown in this video. Koyo bearings have the reddish orange seals while the Chinese bearings usually have a turquoise seal. The Chinese bearings are crap and are guaranteed to fail first. My advise, buy the parts individually or get em from Toyota so you don't end up doing the belt prematurely

@@madmikesgarage4861 I plan on having this car for many more years, through a few more timing belt changes. If I keep using Aisin replacement parts, I won't have to worry much about the oil and water pump failing, but I do worry about their seals as the one you fixed is widely known to fail. I want to reduce that risk by using good RTV. Your seal's outcome will help determine if I use it or not, even against others who know more telling me not to use it. @@guitartec I dont use rtv with o-ring seals. They arent designed for it and it wont help. It will become (rtv) a problem, if you use too much and any of it breaks off into the oil pump. I have used a tiny bit in the past, but it was merely to hold the oring in place during install, not meant to assist in sealing. I suppose a very think layer of rtv could help, if sealing surfaces are heavily pitted. The is rarely the case, tho.
