I’d probably go with the LC500, it’s not ALWAYS about who’s faster guys. Winning or losing a race doesn’t necessarily mean anything. The real winners are Toyota/Lexus, they make beautiful cars.
Agreed 100%. Car manufacturers these days worry too damn much about 0-60 times and track performance, and so on. Not everyone buys a car and take it to the track. Just throw me in a RWD car with a big N.A V8 like these lexuses and I'll be a happy camper
You should put the IS500 as a permanent car in these races. Gives us fans a perspective of how fast or slow any other car is that you have on this channel, win or lose.
The IS 500 is the more practical car with 4 doors and a bigger trunk, but the LC is something special. I would daily drive the IS and set the LC aside for weekend cruises.
Have driven tons of all three(RC-F/GS-F/RC500) and they are all spectacular. The LC is hands down the best sounding of the three, but that CVT 10 speed transmission is terrible. The Prius also was sport a CVT 10 speed, so I don't know if it's the same one or not, but just might be. It also happens to weigh almost 2.25 tons. I don't know why Lexus did not make the IS500 an F car instead of F Sport, which seems to leave it lacking something. All in all though, I don't think you can go wrong with any of them.
That was expected. The 400 lbs more weight on the LC with same power makes the biggest difference. From 50 km/h roll, the gear ratio best for the 8 speed is the 1st gear since 1st gear goes to 85 km/h. Not auto mode (which will select 2nd).
Wow! Both of those cars sounds pissed off. What an engine! The LC benefits from its 10 speed transmission greatly. The IS benefits from being 300lbs lighter. I’d take both in a heartbeat
@@TeeWadeG that's just not how physics works. Weight is inertia, inhibits acceleration whether you're starting from nothing or starting from 50. The hellcat can't launch because it has way too much power and way too little tire (and poor launch control capabilities); all those problems are mostly mitigated from a roll.
SAM! Awesome video yet again...bringing out the IS 500 (beautiful car) I loved this one the LC is a elegant yet beautiful beast also but seeing these matched up was still very exciting to watch. Thank you and everyone once again soo much for this one.
Awesome video! I drive a ‘14 is350 Fsport and was awaiting them to put that beastly v8 back in the IS. Something I do want you to know, as there has been some misinformed information floating around, you can do burnouts in this car! Also if you want FULL control of the transmission you need to completely turn off traction control and put it into manual shifting mode. This entails putting the car in park, holding the traction control button for 5 seconds, then your good to slap that sucker into manual mode and it will rev match when you downshift. It’ll be especially satisfying with that v8!
YES YES!!! That's what I'm talking about and thank you for finally drag racing that piece of beautiful machinery. Congratulations I think you're the first one on RU-vid to drag race the Lexus IS500. 👏🏿👍🏿 I can't wait to receive mine. My man you put a smile on face thank you.
Love the rumble of those V8's! If sound was everything, the IS500 would rule the super midsize sedan segment. Unfortunately, the M3 would destroy it in all performance tests. Same with the ATS-V. I give Lexus props for sticking to its guns and staying naturally aspirated.
@@jackd232 is it? The size of the cars in this segment has grown. To me, they look like midsized sedans. Compare a Gen 1 or 2 IS to current Gen. Or an E46 sedan to a G20 BMW 3 series. They dwarf the older models.
Thanks for posting I do plan on buying another car at the end of the year or sometime next year I've been torn between the IS 500, Audi RS3 and the 2023 BMW M2 but after watching this it will be the Lexus Thanks Again!!!
Cool vid. I’ve driven and tracked and modded these cars more than anyone. The huge difference is the LC has a bespoke Aisn 10 speed that transforms that same V-8. The IS 500 has the same 8 speed from the RC F which is solid but it as good. This enables the heavier LC, even with some carbon fiber construction, to be quick or quicker in most cases and on the track. So happy the IS 500 is here, such a great car!
The AWR10L65 first appeared in the LS500. The LC500 10 speed is a slightly modified version of the LS500 10 speed. The hardware for the IS500 8 speed is the same as the RCF (minus the transmission coolers), but having driven the IS500, software tuning definitely feels different in SPORT+/MANUAL modes. In RCF, it feels much more violent with whiplash effect while the IS500 8 AT is focused on being smooth and comfortable rather than being as frantically quick as possible.
@@2ZZGE100 yeah i was told differently but tend to agree with you. The unit in the LC and LS couldn’t be any different in execution. Trying to figure out changing some RC F gear ratios to IS 500.
@@MikeForsythe The gear ratios are the same in RCF and IS500 from what I can see in the documents. It is something they did on the software tune level. The IS500 shifts are softer/smoother in SPORT+/MANUAL than they are in the RCF. My guess is, it is probably because they wanted to make it more comfortable to shift at full throttle on the streets (like the rest of the IS500).
i think the difference here is in the weight distribution, aerodinamics and the transmission of the cars. The Is500 maybe lighter but it is surely less weight balanced than the lc500 for having the best traction plus the aerodinamics of the lc500 make it just look like a spaceship compared to the Is500. to finish the transmission in the lc500 is newer than the 8speed in the is and surely has less friction and is faster to shift. what sums the drag race for me is that the IS500 is more of brutal beast and the lc more of sophisticated one imo
Actually the 8AT transmission speed according to Lexus in brochures at full throttle is 100 ms vs 120 ms for the 10AT. It is a modified version of the 10 speed out of the LS500.
At full-throttle according to Lexus (in the RCF brochure), the 8AT shifts at 100 ms vs 120 ms for the 10AT. However, possibly the software tuning on the IS500 is different for the same 8AT.
I see you rocking the oak and row swag Sam 👀 nice video, liking the changes to the quality/transitions. Kinda curious how my car would do against yours...could be very close
Sam was gracious enough to wear the hat I presented to him that day at the track. Always thankful for the opportunity and his generosity to wear it during the filming. Plus he looks great with it on!
4:37 Curious the added weight of the LC plants it down so the tires maintain grip while the lighter IS breaks loose. Personally I like the heft of the LC. It feels substantial and the rear wheel steer gives it nimbleness. It only becomes apparent under hard breaking and turn in but 99% of the ppl don't come close to that. Hell I drive this thing like a maniac racing anything and I've felt it just a few times under those harsh conditions. Im sure you'd really feel it at the track.
I still like my LC best. I mean I picked it over the M5, M5 Comp, E63, and 911. Dont care its not as fast I have motorcycles for that. Its fast enough and feels the most amazing behind the wheel.
@@JremV Yes, we all know the M340i would take all of them, same for the C43, but a head to head against the rest of the Asian offerings is something I've wanted to watch for a long long time.
The LC is a beautiful car no doubt, though for practicality and passengers (and keeping the V8 alive for a few more generations), the IS500 is a car I REALLY want to add to my garage! Definitely the engine they should have put in the Tundra, and I'd even like to see a hybrid of that and electrifying the front end just because.
Good looking hat my guy! Love seeing this V8 on V8 battle. Shout out Shimmy with his epic LC500. ...........HOLD THE PHONE. I did a run in Shims LC and its in the video?! Hahah!! Epic.
@@MrM4rvelous Shimmy had to take a call and he asked me to hop in and give er - hilarious that it got into the video. I didn't even have a chance to strap on the seatbelt. Solid 12.5 seconds gotta be honest
Love seeing the IS 500...being a owner of a 2022 IS 350..this makes me want to trade it in when the 500 becomes more available and markup comes down..awesome race!
@@StackXBT because he will have to pay an arm and a leg for the IS500. I got lucky, but in Canada prices will triple. And honestly this car isn’t worth more than MSRP
Great video. Both cars are awesome. Drag racing is such an American thing and it's largely a limited and somewhat useless metric, but these were both quite equal in that regard. A draw. But one of these cars is handsome and looks great while the other is DROP DEAD gorgeous and sexy as HELLLL! So, I know which ones I will definitely select. Thanks for the great video, guys!!
I drove a IS 500 in weather just over freezing, had trouble getting any good traction... Drove a LC500 recently, it was a coupe and at 6'5" tall I was hitting my head on the side molding of the roof over the window, it annoyed me... Sounded great, but was not really much faster than my RX500h... compared to my 2018 SL63 there was zero comparison for speed, different car really..... The LC in sport plus was about the same as my SL63 in comfort.. SL63 in sport plus was much stiffer. Anyway it was interesting to drive one as I always wanted to, steering felt tight... nice ride really.
The LC500 is a great car and will purchase it over the IS anyday but the lack of power is the reason the LC isn't selling. For the amount of money and weight of the LC it needs to atleast have 550+hp
Dude I think in drag 1 you thought you were in a drifting competition. I am just so sad they don't make the ISF any more. Have driven both cars and they are absolute awesome. LC not an everyday car as its too hard to open wide door in shopping centre. LC is eye catching in the Street when you drive.
I have an IS500 and LC500. The races went exactly as I expected. The IS is much lighter but the LC sounds like a beast. Sam, what was wrong with your IS500? Automotive Press' IS500 had an exhaust issue. Is that a Canadian thing?
No...the exhaust issue happened in the States too. I think the first reports of them where in the West Coast. It seemed to pop up within 100 miles or so of ownership, but a gasket replacement fixed it up. I'm sure the constant plant closings were the culprit, but no one (online) has been able to pin point which build dates were affected. I'm at 3300 miles on my IS 500 and didn't have any issues, thank goodness.
@@DLPTonyATL ok, I have 2k on mine now and no issues yet. I just heard an exhaust from RR Racing. It sounds great but I need to see if it has a drone at cruising speeds. And I'm looking for tires options, I need to see if Michelins are the only answer.
The LC500 is truly stunning. We know in 10 years, the LC500 sold today will still be ticking over when the same BMW/MB/Audi's sold today will be getting scrapped. It's very expensive as a car, and I get the appeal, but I wouldn't buy one brand new. In 2/3 years, for around $65k, I think its a better bargain. The IS500, I would pay around $55k for, so again, not a new one in the current car market where dealer markups are insane, but a used IS-500 from say 2019/2020 in one year from now, will be a very attractive option. Even some 2016/17 GS-F, which uses the same proven engine, is absolutely epic. Just good luck finding one.
It might just be my OCD but i can't get over the part where you change drivers.... The human element can e a major factor.... Especially where the winner can mean milliseconds if difference....
As an IS200t driver. I want nothing more than to upgrade to the IS500. 🤣. But literally EITHER one of those would make me happy any day🤣. Straight up fantastic cars.
I just bought one for my wife and was playing with it. You have to hold the traction control for 4 seconds. You’ll be able to unleash its full potential
