For masculine women (women that tend to be more masculine than most men) its a turn off. I been in the US military since 2010, one observation is that female NCO are usually more assertive and masculine than most young male NCO. Many of these women are lesbians but not all. But these women are very confident outwardly (maybe they are compensating for not being male?). But most women outside the military are fake masculine. They were told to be confident, fierce, strong, dominant... any adjective that fits what they would call "toxic masculinity." Maybe boys were humbled when they did they tough guy act and so when they join the military in an environment that calls for them to act "manly" they self doubt or get self conscious for faking it. While girls never got shut down for acting bossy or assertive, so their transition to the military leadership role is more natural. Only one time in my life did I actually get the girl for being a "nice guy". Not despite being a nice guy, but because of it.
