Now this is some useful data for comparing apples! There's theory, and then there's practice, and all the math in the world doesn't mean much until it physically does what you expect it to do. I ordered an ARC 18" Proof barrel after our conversation the other day, and am getting pretty excited about deer season with it this year. Thanks for sharing all your legwork and helping to better inform our math... It's pretty sweet when it all lines up just like it does on paper.

I'm gonna be using 14.5" 6ARC this year for Deer and Hogs. It's super rare I'm gonna take shot longer than 150 yards. Most are gonna be 50 - 100 yards . I'm getting 2500 FPS with 14.5" 6ARC using 103g ELDX . I'm at 1080 Ft pounds of energy at 200 yards and 935 ft pounds at 300 yards . 900 ft pounds of energy is my lowest energy I abide by when hunting Whitetail or Hogs .

A fair comparison would be using a 123 gr. Grendel bullet. Hands down the best of the bunch.
@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009
@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009 2 года назад
123 grain bullet bullet for the Grendel, has quite a bit slower velocity than the 107gn. shown. This was a comparison between the three cartridges using 100-107 grain class bullets to compared velocity, energy and drop at distance.

@@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009 I would try to compare Ballistic Coeffecient over weight. There are many great bullets around 100 grains in .243 as well ; )
@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009
@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009 2 года назад
@@j.t.patton7820 Agreed. But for long range shooting or competition only. A hunter focuses on terminal performance on game such as the necessary minimum 1,000flbs for deer size game. As shown in the charts in this video. 300-450 yards is maximum distance for these cartridges before that energy threshold is deficient. Hunting bullets generally have lower BC's than bullets designed for match shooting. Thanks for your comments.
@j.t.patton7820
@j.t.patton7820 2 года назад
@@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009 You will find the 123 gr. bullet to be the 'sweet spot' for Grendel in every aspect. Similar to a 150 gr. in .308...great up close, but 175 gr. carries energy much better and is the sweet spot in that case. I'd much rather be heavy-for-case while choosing Hunting bullets ; )

The only problem with 243 is you have to stick it in a large frame AR10, you can't do it on a AR15. A heavyweight rifle that costs substantially more isn't as pleasant to walk up and down the mountain with.

Thanks for making the video, I finished building a 6mm ARC with a 18" Ballistic Advantage 18" upper before they stopped making them. I haven't had a chance to really dial it in because of all the fire restrictions up here in Montana have the public ranges closed in my area. Looking forward to shooting it soon. I bought that same upper back in November '21 and have about 1k rounds down it so far. Very impressive results so far. Averaging 1/2moa with Hornady Match factory ammo, and averages 2500fps with a SD of ~6 or 7 on average. Shot several gas gun matches with it and it holds 1/2moa out to 1000yds if I do my part. Handloads have gotten to ~2715fps with 108g ELDM or 107g SMK and 1/3moa. Dave's videos here have been invaluable.

for me a 250 yard zero will usually get +3 inches high at 150 yards around -4 inches low at 300. at 400 it really starts dropping fast. (from 370yrds a -12" drop) (to 420yrds -20" drop) 8 inches of drop within those 50 yards. a 16 inch hold over will cover those 50 yards. but on most rifles goin 2800-3000fps 0-300yrds is a point blank shot on the cross hair. 300-370yrds needs an 8" holdover (to cover the -4" to -12" drop). 370-420yrds needs a 16" holdover (to cover the -12" to -20" drop) after that even if you have more bullet energy to go further you should not take those shots. after that it turns into glorified target shooting and is disrespectful to the animal. every experienced hunter who also shoots long range targets, knows those 2 disciplines are to be respectfully separated.

It's that the heavies you can stick in a 6ARC? the Grendel was designed with a 123gr bullet, so pick them both a heavy for caliber projectile.

Your scope on your AR-15 6.5 Grendel is higher than 1.5” you have listed on your ballistics charts. Not a big deal unless your comparing ballistic drop between an AR-15 in 6.5 Grendel and a bolt action 243 Winchester. My 30 mm tube scopes are right at 2.75” over the bore on my AR-15’s and 1” scope tubes are about 2.5” above the bore. The height over bore might or might not skew your results really depends on the particular rifles your comparing.

1.5 inches is the default on the Hornady Ballistics calculator worksheet and I never checked to see if that input value can be changed. You are right though and thanks for your comment.

Something to consider, what are your velocities at each yardage? If your velocity isn’t high enough to expand the bullet properly then who cares about the point blank range.
