Original video description:
Grade 6 ADI Trainer, Claire Wilmot, gives a demonstration of how to give a Part 3 lesson on the Turn in the Road exercise. Ged Wilmot is role playing a DSA examiner. Traditional instruction is used throughout, which is currently the preferred style for the Part 3 examination. Coaching videos will be made available at a later date for ADI's wishing to provide a more natural, client-centred style of learning.

Hi guys, I have just discovered your videos and they are great. I have only just booked my part 1 so am in the very early stages but I will be (without a doubt) using your videos to assist me in my training and my exams. It's also great that I can watch them full screen due to the great quility they are recorded at. Thanks again. Ady.

The part 3 videos on their website is exceptional brilliant. I would suggest going on their website to any PDI, what I do is watch the relevant PSTs before a training session to get the most out of my session. Such a brilliant training tool. Matthew PDI

Beautiful - it's so easy when you have a pre-trained pupil, isn't it! I have yet to find a real pupil whose eyelids would not be drooping long before the end of this briefing. This is a perfect illustration of what ADI training still lacks - we are being taught how to pass a 'Part 3' exam, not how to teach driving. I usually introduce this topic very early, by (either accidentally or on purpose) turning into a cul-de-sac (maybe with a hammer-head) and doing a joint problem-solving exercise.

Precisely so. Despite my initial scepticism about the Part 3 test, I must say that despite the antics of my Part 3 excamiers (3 attempts!), I have actually since encountered in real pupils ALL the behaviours the examiners tried out on me, however unbelievable. Neverheless, I maintain that if I'd been taught 'how to pass Part 3' THEN 'how to teach a real pupil, I'd have been a happier bunny. I today's message is if you want to be an ADI, DON'T, but if you REALLY do, find an excellent trainer.

Thanks so much for your lovely feedback Razia - all our training takes place in Oldham near Manchester. We do have trainees from all over the UK - most stay at the local Travelodge or Premier Inn. Give us a call if you want us to explain your options :-)

Hi, and thanks for your comment! I am hoping your comment regarding ADI Training actually refers to a deficiency in the DSA's requirements, rather than a sweeping statement regarding our training standards! We certainly don't teach people to just pass the test, as our current and past trainees will vouch. However, the DSA are looking for specific requirements in order to pass Part 3, and without a sufficient briefing, the examiner will mark the PDI down and 'play up' badly with any omissions.

Hi, and thanks for your feedback! We have trained many many people whose first language is not English. Although the Part 3 test can only be carried out in the English language, our personal experience has been that most examiners make a little bit of allowance for this on test. For example, they seem to accept that explanations can take a little longer and that pulling up a little more frequently is necessary.

The vehicle used in this particular video is the Vauxhall Zafira 1.9 CDTi (our family car) - in all other videos, we used the Ford Focus 1.6 TDCi :-)

Hi Uli, just seen your comment on our video, so apologies for not replying sooner! Thanks for your kind compliments on our videos, we are delighted you are finding them so useful. How did you get on with your test? I hope you passed!
@GedWilmot
@GedWilmot 13 лет назад
@1812MK Of course, during the Part 3 test, the examiner would direct the PDI to a suitable location, but I think the question about it being suitable is absolutely essential if we are to develop thinking, safe and responsible drivers :-)
@GedWilmot
@GedWilmot 11 лет назад
Hi Razia - I am unsure what is causing your audio problem on the videos. We do have videos for ALL the pre-set tests on our website, yes. I can't post a link here in the comments as RU-vid won't allow it, but it is at the bottom of the video. Once on our site, click 'ADI Part 3 Videos' on the left navigation menu and you will find them all there. Hope that helps!
@GedWilmot
@GedWilmot 13 лет назад
@1812MK The examiner would be impressed if you started with a discussion about the area - how suitable he/she feels it is, what factors would make it less safe. etc. Part of our job is to develop safe drivers who are able to make safe choices and decisions - instructors who insist on choosing areas FOR their pupils are missing a huge opportunity to develop this essential skill. Good luck with your Part 3! :-)

SafedriverN.....When you say 'very early'... how early? Presumably and hopefully you introduce this after the pupil is feeling confident with their... MSM routine, steering, gas control, appropriate use of brake, clutch control, approach to turn left and right and emerging left and right. Successful reverse manoeuvres are more easily accomplished once the pupil has gained plenty of confidence with all aspects of driving forward.

@ismaillea Thanks for your kind comments - did you pass your Part 3 test yet? :-)
@GedWilmot
@GedWilmot 13 лет назад
@1812MK Hmmm I would tend to disagree with you I'm afraid! A good ADI should encourage their learners to think for themselves about where it would be appropriate to carry out any manoeuvre. Learners may even choose an appropriate corner to reverse around or a road to turn around in by themselves. Once chosen, the ADI should explore the advantages/disadvantages of their choice with them. After all, we're supposed to be helping develop life skills here - who makes the decisions after test day?

Hi. Great video. How harsh or lenient would the examiner be on the use of English, for someone whose first language isn't English? Couldn't find anything on the net regarding this, so would really appreciate a reply. Thanks in advance!

@GedWilmot
@GedWilmot 13 лет назад
@portcullis11 Thanks Mike, we have sat in on literally hundreds of Part 3 tests with many different examiners, so we try to portray the role of 'pupil' as real as possible. Examiners do vary, however - some may not be as compliant as Claire and I may portray, so be aware of that and remain in control throughout the test. Good luck with your test, and if you need any advice or guidance, please give us a call or drop me an email :-)

When explanations are given, examiners seem to be more interested in the quality and correctness of the message that is coming across, rather than correct wording. Hope that helps! :-)
