If not replacing the pan gasket or rear cover gasket, adding Permatex black (oil rated) silicone gasket maker where the rear cover mates to the oil pan, specifically in the corners helps. Often oil leaks from there simulating a rear main seal leak. "If in doubt emery cloth the burrs out"

Thanks, I'll try to remember that the next time I'm in there.

Thank you for the video. I have a donor engine and transmission with 140,000 miles going into my 07 solara (engine blown at 402,000…with no rear main seal ever). I took a look at the seal on the donor engine and it looks good. I heard what you said about yours leaking after replacement and think maybe I should just leave the original seal alone? Thoughts ? Thanks!

Well, it's not an easy part to get to once everything is in, so I'd probably replace it while you can, just do it right, you know, not like me.

@@antimattergarage8147 when you replaced it initially, did you get the seal from Toyota ?

What were the symptoms? Leaking oil by the tranny? I have this nice steady drip of oil where the transmission is. I'm starting to think my rear main is leaking. It's got 167k miles on it. FIPG is Toyota Seal Packing 103. You can buy it on Amazon for about $20. It's way better than normal Permatex. I tried 4 different times to get the oil pan off my 04 Avalon and then decided to make a mechanic suffer instead. He bent the oil pan getting it off, the previous owner used FIPG on the pan and that thing sealed it up good. It seems much stronger while still being elastic. I took off all the pan bolts and ripped on it but it didn't even budge. I even bought the oil pan removal tool JTC 1315 and still couldn't get enough purchase to get it off. I didn't have any pan leaks but I needed to replace the oil pickup tube because I could tell it had sludge in there. I know it's more expensive than Permatex but damn it works good. I'm a Chevy guy and I am going to use FIPG whenever I don't want anything to leak.

Well I had about 5 leaks on the car and I didn't know exactly where they were coming from, so I guess you could say there was oil coming from between the engine and transmission. I only verified it when I took off the flywheel and could see oil all over the back of it. I got ALL of the leaks fixed and then sprung one on the power steering line under the car. Go figure. I was under the impression that FIPG stands for Form in Place Gasket. I believe permatex makes one by that name as well, but I hear on a different brand. Hope you got all of your repairs done and have a long life with it.
