In general, the most "devout" people in this world are the most evil. They kill innocents, rape children, scam their followers out of money for personal gain, and live in direct opposition to the teachings of their holy books. I'm sure the real Jesus would be glad that the Christians changed his name, and are doing all of this evil in the name of a mythical Jesus, instead of a real Jehoshua ben Joseph.

After serving for 25 years in the army, I can’t tell you how many times I was “forced” to bow my head in prayer in formations and other occasions. (I refused and instead looked around) there is a prevalent air of Christianity in the military and I am thankful for the MRFF. Most of the time people don’t push their religion on you, mostly because it’s against the rules but there are those who don’t give a shit about the rules and see it as their mission to save souls. I love telling them how I’m an atheist. Now that I’m retired, going to the VA is 10 times worse especially since I chose to live in the south.
They made me pick a service to attend. I told them that I would rather just have that free time. They weren't having that so I declared Judaism. Then they had to get a Corporal to drive me off base.

a woman in line at the store was short a dollar, so i spotted it for her, she thanked me and went on and on about how good a christian i was, thats when i told her im jewish and she got real serious and disappointed and said that she forgives me and one day jesus will make me a christian. I guess christian charity is good, and any other charity is not good enough. Anon archist You are 100% correct. I live in the "bible belt" of the Southeast and see that crap all the time. I do think the South has the most hypocrites, since they claim to be the most religious. I dropped organized religion 50 years ago and have not looked back. I am an atheist, and could not be more content with it.

Well, it’s a year later & nothing good has happened in the MAGA USA. Worst country in the world for CoVid19 & sparking national & global protests against police brutality. I think we have a great separation of “the Christian church” & the Christian members of the church from the essence of Christianity found in parts of the New Testament. For Christians, the old testament should be relegated to a history text or ancient literature and completely scrapped as holy scripture. Christians should be ashamed that it’s included as their holy scripture. The same can be said of many books in the New Testament which have very little or nothing to do with the teachings of Christ. 1st & 2nd Timothy and Revelations are books which come to mind. Two written in the best interest of misogyny and the other by someone on LSD &/or psychotic. Most of my atheist friends have ethics & morals superior to my Christian friends & I consider them, the atheists, better Christians than the Christians, if one allows the distillation of the message from the myth & magic of Jesus.
They feel threatened if anyone asserts their own right not to (have to) believe like them. They want a de facto national religion as long as it's theirs.

It's super creepy that this remains an issue in our armed forces. I remember in the aughts the rise of generals who added _Spiritual Fitness_ to the readiness itenerary (yep. It's still there on the USMC website.) There was a strong implication pushed within the system that one cannot be a fit soldier without faith in God, specifically, faith that a narrow evangelistic doctrine is ordained by God, and that the missions on which the USMC are sent are equally deity-endorsed. (Fun fact: President George W. Bush consulted dozens of spiritual advisors regarding whether Operation: Iraqi Freedom was _Jus Bellam_ a just cause to go to war. All of them advised it was not, except the pastor from Bush's own Methodist church. That one endorsement was good enough for President Bush.) This particular point -- that the US military institution _will_ pressure you to convert to a very American-Exceptionalist extreme form of evangelist Christianity, including locking you into an auditorium for hours of sermons at a time -- has been on my list of counter-recruitment points since around 2008 when soldiers were getting general (not honorable) discharges for not being willing to comply with the state's Great-Commission agenda.
The hardest work done in the military is by the Special Ops community. I can tell you from my service in support of those folks that religion, sexuality, let alone Jewish-ness.. are non-factors among the men and women who put their lives in each others' hands. You slap your brethren in the face when you say things like this This kind of hate is virtually ONLY propagated by low-level do-nothing sycophants who have no idea what it even means to put differences aside to accomplish a real mission. Uriel238 - I just learned a good Latin phrase I should've known: Jus Bellam, Just War. I became aware of Mikey Weinstein a couple of years ago listening to NPR, particularly about his dealings with the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, where the Bible Thumpers seem to be especially abundant. Since then I've learned some more about this, but I had no idea how pervasive the Bible Thumping in the Armed Forces has become in the last thirty years, in light of some of the veterans' comments. Ten or twelve years back I read something on military evangelical pastors serving in Afghanistan, many of them advocating for the conversion of Afghan society to Christianity. During one of these "sermons" the pastor was striding up and down the stage ranting like a TV preacher, while mostly bored soldiers listlessly put up with it. Some were disgusted by the whole act... the pastor was wearing a T-shirt with a map of Afghanistan with some type of Christianizing lightning striking the country. The author segued into a comparison to the pastors more common during the First Gulf War under Bush Sr., the Father Mulcahy type portrayed in M* A*S*H*, but who were slowly but surely being replaced by the evangelical maniacs so depressingly familiar to us today. This was accomplished by a rule change during the Reagan administration: previously, pastors and rabbis (mostly) were chosen by the proportion of each type of sect present in the military. There were Methodists, Roman Catholics, Baptists, Reform Jew, some Buddhists and Hindus, Greek Orthodox, what have you. Of course, most were Christians. The Reagan era rule change obliterated the distinction between the sects, and military servants of the divine were now free to be chosen without regard to the preferences of the soldiers. Huge changes over time due to such simple rule changes... the Republicans knew exactly what they were doing.
@@BroadwayJosh Several years ago there was an expose piece published by Truthout.org that explained WHY so many Christian chaplains were being recruited into the military. At that time, kids--acting as drone pilots--were showing reluctance to use their joysticks to drop ordnance on civilians in places like Afghanistan. The U.S. War Machine could not have a pesky thing like moral conscience overriding the quest to kill foreign people deemed "enemy combatants." The solution was to bring in these chaplains (who are to Jesus, what Donald Trump is to leadership) so that they could use "moral authority" to override the consciences of these young, vulnerable (to indoctrination... a problem most troops face due to the protocol of following orders within the military) men. In my view this pressure on soldiers TO kills is 180-degrees opposed to everything that Jesus Christ taught. Long ago the Catholic church found a way around this problem by coining the term, "Holy War." Remember when Bush, Jr. let the term "Crusades" slip after 911? They have definitely revived the concept of Holy War as New Crusades. Even people like Tulsi Gabbard are fine with murdering Muslims as is Modi in India. This cannot end well. It's the traditional obedience-to-authority, patriarchal religions that are holding mankind's spiritual growth hostage. Couple this collective retardation with the great technological advances made to weaponry and it IS a recipe for Armageddon. Apparently, that is what's being courted by these delusional buffoons who have, by stealth, managed to obtain high positions in the U.S. government, big business, and the military. They indeed do hide behind the cross and the flag while understanding NOTHING in the way of the teachings of Jesus. They are ushering in a death sentence for mankind. Their gross ignorance is the greatest threat to humanity. And the belief in End Times is the justification for so much of the damage they are doing.

Part of conservative Christian dogma is that you don't just get to go to Heaven or Hell, but your life is replayed (or I would assume the high/low notes when it comes to God) for all to see. Depending on who's preaching, if your name is found in the Book of Life (once again, an unnecessary step if God is omniscient), and you get to go into Heaven, that step might be skipped, but if you're going to Hell you get to presumably be embarrassed in front of God and whoever else is hanging out near his throne. If it's not skipped for the Heaven-bound, they can at least tell themselves it won't be that embarrassing - maybe a "Goddammit," said while hitting one's thumb with a hammer, etc. but even if there's something superbad like cheating on your wife with a gay man while stealing orphanage funds to go to a Madonna concert, it's only temporary embarrassment as you'll soon be in your mansion in Heaven.
You might as well ask why an omniscient god would create the universe to his exact specifications and then keep hitting the reset button---the Flood, Jesus, End of Days??? Or why it would create its own adversary to work against it's will? Logic isn't the strong point of religion.

I've hypothesized that the threat of hellfire* doesn't come from a need to imagine suffering for the fallen but rather the common desire to be in the Cool Kids club. There's little concern for the one-hundred-billion (and counting!) occupants of the Hell of the Damned (contrast two-billion _at most_ who get into Heaven, assuming the Roman Catholic Church is the _true_ church and is generous.) Everyone wants to feel special when that's hard to do in societies of hundreds of millions (let a lone a global population of billions), hence the greater popularity of those denominations that offer that exclusivity. * The commonly referenced _lake of fire_ is actually the lair of Ammut the Devourer, who ate the souls of the Egyptian unworthy to be recycled into new souls (kinda like the way the _Circle of Life_ recycles the same atoms though multiple life forms). I'm not sure why Christian versions of it remove the monster and turn it into an eternity of torture.
