One of the nice subtleties that permeate this series is the pose Gaius strikes when he says "I am the instrument of God." And holding a cigarette, no less. ;)

I just learned last week that Apollo was not a combat pilot when he arrived on the Galactica. Apollo was a test pilot for the military

All this has happened before, all this will happen again. The phrase encompasses the world view of ancient Greco-Roman and oriental mythologies that saw history as being cyclical. The gods created the people, and gave them the Laws and Commandments. But eventually the people offend the gods, who then decide to destroy the world with a great catastrophe. The survivors then migrate to a new land and start history all over again. Leaders play stereotyped roles as in a theatrical play. Roslin is like Moses -who led the people to the promised land, but died before they actually arrived. Several other characters can be interpreted as also playing other stereotyped historical and religious roles.

The Phrase: All this has happened before, all this will happen again. Is NOT limited to the Greco-Romans. It is also reflected in the BIBLE Ecclesiastes 1:9 As to the Greco-Romans, even their Gods are cyclical whereas the Abrahamic Gods are not. Chronos, a Titan, was killed by his children, Zeus and those who fought with him. The created kill their creator is a theme of their mythology that is not reflected in Abrahamic Religions.

If you weren't already watching this show, and described yourself as a "psychology nerd" and wanted to watch sci-fi, I would have said that this is the show you need to see. I'm an engineer, and I do remember a few snide comments from anti-fans from the time about BSG being just an excuse for engineering people to pretend that we knew something about human drama. But I did learn a lot about psychology through watching the show and discussing it on the forum. As Ron Moore said early on, they were not trying to make a space show. They were trying to make a human drama, which just happened to be set in space.
@ChibiHoshiDragon
@ChibiHoshiDragon Год назад
Any TRUE Sci-Fi fan should NEVER be in it for the Space or Explosions. A TRUE Sci-Fi fan knows that Sci-Fi is about the human condition. It IS about the human drama. One of the best quotes from Stargate references the best quote from an excellent Author: _Science fiction is an existential metaphor. It allows us to tell stories about the human condition. Isaac Asimov once said: "Individual science fiction stories may seem as trivial as ever to the blinder critics and philosophers of today, but the core of science fiction, its essence, has become crucial to our salvation, if we are to be saved at all."_

Tyllium is a fictional ore. It was created for the original Battlestar Galactica TV series in the late-70's (where it was pronounced Tie-lee-um) and like many character and technological names was carried over into the re-imagined series (with the pronunciation changed to Till-ee-um for some reason).

Snakes numbering 2+10. 12 is an important number in mythology. Probably originating in the 12 constellations of the Zodiac, and their corresponding 12 months of the year. In our history: the 12 apostles represent the 12 tribes of Israel. There are legends of a “lost 13th tribe” of Israel -arguably the Ethiopian Jews. In BSG: they are 12 colonies of Kobol and Earth is the mythical, lost 13th colony.

Ironically there are really 13 constellations in the zodiac and 13 months in a year. The 13th zodiac is named Ophiuchus.
@ChibiHoshiDragon

The Mormons believe they are the lost 13th tribe, and Larson included many references to his religion in the original show. For example: Kolob, the first creation of God, is the star nearest to the throne of God according to the Mormon founder. Ethiopia’s Beta Israel are considered a lost tribe but NOT considered the 13th. It is considered one of the 12, as today 10 of the tribes are considered lost. There IS an alternate option for the 13th other than Mormons, the Khazars that succeeded the Huns.

One of the earliest civilizations, the Babylonians, used base 12 notation in their mathematics, rather than our base 10. From this we get the concept of a dozen, and numbers that are even multiples of 12, such as 360 degrees in a circle.

About Lee, there is a blink and you would miss it reference at some point during the show that shows that he is actually only a reserve in the military, it might explain his motivation at times as he is not fully in the military like his father or Starbuck is and yet he finds himself as Galactica's lead pilot..

In the podcast, Ron Moore explaines that this stands for ‘Colonial Fleet Reserves’; and that Apollo was a reserve officer because he wasn't sure what he was doing with his life and if he was going to pursue a full career in the Colonial Fleet.”

Tylium is made up for Battlestar Galactica. Pythia, however, comes from real life. Pythia was the title of the priestess of the temple of Apollo at Delphi, also known as the Oracle of Delphi. For centuries she was the most famous and prestigious oracle in the ancient Greek world, making prophecies and interpreting the will of Apollo.

Also, if you are interested in Bill Adama's father, Joseph, watch Caprica once you are done with BSG and the 2 movies. He is a main character on that show. It unfortunately got cancelled after just 1 season. Starts slow and not as action packed. More soap opera-ish but still good.

The show Caprica, which is a prequel to Battlestar Galactica shows Adama as a boy with his father. It also explains the advanced AI and development of the cylons. If you compare their religion to the Roman gods, then the cylons were the Roman slaves. Unfortunately it was cancelled after the first season before the timeline connected to BG.

Tillium is a made up ore. (In the original series, the fuel was Tylium "tie lee um.") This is based loosely on an episode from the classic series. This is a more straight forward military operation: no inconvenient resort & casino full of humans totally unaware of the fall of the Colonies, no carnivorous aliens; & no self-serving politician set on undermining Adama!

Regarding religion, in most cases you are asking the right questions (as usual), and we are not answering them to avoid spoilers (as usual). The one thing you mentioned which seemed weird is that Gaius might think that he is the leader that Pythia is talking about. Although 6 is leading Gaius to see himself as an instrument of God, nothing in their discussion referenced the specific "dying leader" prophecy that Roslin and Elosha (the priest) discussed. There was a lot of discussion in the online forums of the time about if God or gods were real in the BSG universe, and a lot of people got very emotionally involved, as if there were some correlation between the existence of the divine in the show and the existence of the divine in the real world. The bottom line is that people in the show have the same sorts of beliefs, doubts, and discussions that we have in real life.

I like your corner cut PIP. The prop makers were told to “cut corners” they took it literally as a joke. Although it cost more money it gave the show a unique look. I laughed at your mentioning about smoking in a confined space. I’m gen X. I remember when smoking was indoors everywhere. To get to the nonsmoking sections in restaurants and lounges you had to walk through the smoking section. Fun times, who needs breathing. One of the reasons I love this show is the debates: religious, political, military, even relationship. One of the best thing about sci fi is you can controversial topics without winning fingers.

According to the official BSG chronology, this is 12 days after Helo and Caprica-Sharon have sex. For a human woman, that would be unusually early (but not impossible) for morning sickness. Of course, Sharon is a Cylon. Can Cylon women even get pregnant? If so, how would the course of their pregnancy differ from human pregnancies? These are some of the questions that we were asking as this first aired.
@jeremykraenzlein5975

Tillium, as others have noted here, is a made-up substance for the show. Presumably it is something that we simply haven't discovered yet, and that is why we can not build spaceships with FTL drives. There are a few rules of BSG physics which they announced in the run-up to the miniseries. First, unlike the Star Trek universe of producer Ron Moore's most recent previous show (Star Trek: Deep Space 9), time travel is absolutely impossible in the BSG universe. Also, the Colonials have just two technologies which the show will never explain, they just have them because they are needed to make the story work: FTL drives and artificial gravity. Other than those and routine space travel, any technology that we don't have, the Colonials don't have.

About the question if something supernatural exists in this story's universe. Prophetic dreams like the one Roslyn had really scream "supernatural." It didn't seem like something that could be a coincidence (like for example thinking about someone and a minute later that person visits/calls)

The Pythian Prophecies are to mirror the Oracle of Delphi. Pythia was the High Priestess of the Temple of Apollo in our mythology They say the Priestesses of the Oracle of Delphi would see the future due to ethylene gas, and though not proven, Native Americans ARE known to use Peyote in their spiritual rituals, so hallucinations as messages of religious origin IS precedented The Greek-Roman religions were very cyclical. Chronos was defeated/usurped by his son Zeus. The Created replace their Creator is a big theme for the old religions. In fact, many religions have a cyclical birth, destruction, rebirth cycle. The return of their God/Gods after some apocalyptic event. And many religions have their version of: All of this has happened before, and all of this will happen again. The bible has: Ecclesiastes 1:9 Even science has some cyclical options, like the Big Bounce theory, which is basically the Big Bang created the universe and it will continue to expand until a certain point then contract again to the point of a Big Crunch, which will destroy everything and lead to another Big Bang to create a new universe and repeat. Morning sickness is known to start at 6 weeks, though some have reported it as early as 4 weeks pregnant. That is 2 weeks after conception for the unlucky few. That is around the same time you will get a positive urine test.
