Here’s how you include DmC in the new game. Dante sees Nero’s new cut, and he’s like “What happened to all your hair?” and holds a mop up next to his head to compare. And Nero’s like “I got it cut, old man. You should give it a shot.” “What, and get an undercut like yours?” And he looks into the camera. “Not in a million years.”
No, you see... people grossly misunderstand the true genius behind the writing in this game. When they claimed it was Shakespearean, they weren't kidding, and nothing exemplifies this more than the Succubus scene. People misconstrue it as bad writing. That couldn’t be farther from the truth: it is in actuality, a true masterpiece genius of character interaction and a multifaceted, multidimensional masterclass of storytelling in general, a true stroke of true skill brought to us by the most literate, well-spoken and wise men and women that worked on this game that rivals the likes of Edgar Allan Poe and HP Lovecraft in its tragic beauty, and I’ll explain it all to you properly, here. First, we have the Succubus, a being that is commonly depicted in fiction as a being of unparalleled beauty, looking like a monster that was shat out by the One Reborn’s asshole, a boss monster from Bloodborne from the Souls-of series created by From Software. This is intentional, as the distorted figure of the Succubus clearly demonstrates the true evil she holds in her heart as she secretes the slurm that people drink up above, blissful ignorant of the true devilry that goes on underneath, if only they bothered to look. This creates a feeling of self-grandiosity within the Succubus, as she clearly thinks she is superior to everyone else, the true owner of the people up above and entitled to her position, despite the clear controversy her actions bring; but she is blind to this. Instead, she believes this is the natural order of things, the way everything should be, the machine oiled and working as intended. Second, we feature Donte, the protagonist of this iteration of the Devil May Cry; DmC Devil May Cry videogame. He, unlike the people up above, descends towards the depths in order to confront the evil that lurks underneath and calls it out for the true evil that it is. The evil then, incapable of articulating a defense for its actions, instead, justifying it as the natural order of things, lashes out at Donte with words so true to her nature, so true to her incapability of forming a coherent argument, that its tragedy is truly Shakespearean in its design: “Fuck you.” Donte, then, realizes that she is a being stuck in her own dementia and incapable of moving on with new, different ideas. He realizes then, that the Succubus is a being forever stuck in a moment in time she is incapable of seeing past. Knowing this, Donte retorts to the Succubus with her own words - a mirror being cast upon her own visage and philosophy: “Fuck you.” He planned, that maybe, with these words being cast back at her, the Succubus would see her reflection for the twisted monster that it truly is. The true darkness that lurks in her heart and has spread out from her shell and morphed her into a monster. This shows that Donte is, in fact, a good being trying to restore this poor creature’s sanity back to something salvageable. However, Donte’s rescue attempt is foiled by the Succubus’ incapability of seeing her own reflection at all - a gross misunderstanding of her twisted nature and self-entitlement issues. If maybe he had chosen different words, or explained himself in different ways, he could have made her see the darkness within her and helped her climb her way up to the light… but they were incapable of doing so. Both Donte in his attempt at rescuing her, and the Succubus, by retaliating, again, in a tragic manner that makes me weep every time I hear she say the words… “Fuck you.” Truly devastating. Note, that as she says “Fuck you” for the second time, she vomits. This is a natural reaction her body takes upon being confronted by the truth - it being incapable of absorbing it and turning it into something meaningful. Her incapability of learning from her experiences and growing as a person. That is her body rejecting your reality and substituting her very own instead; which is a subtle and yet masterfully done reference to the movie “Dungeonmaster”, which was later referenced in “Myth Busters” as it is more commonly known. Both movie titles can apply here, as Donte is the Myth Buster, destroying creatures of legend and bringing them down for the safety and healing of the world, and the Succubus as the Dungeon Master herself, who is inevitably defeated and brought low to obscurity, forever forgotten to history. This scene and this game’s writing also suck fucking ass through a straw, holy fucking shit this is awful.

So it's less that Sparda's a nobody and more that he's literally a race traitor, so now when demons day "Dante son of Sparda" in DmC it's like going "Dante, son of the demon race traitor." also there's a thing with Nephilim being the only thing that can kill a Demon lord or some shit that explains why Mundas went so hard on killing is brother, Sparda the race traitor, and his Nephilim kids (the only thing he actually needs to worry about) that said, it's still super weird because the actual execution of the demons yell at Dante feels more like it's because of a legendary legacy that doesn't exist anymore.
What baffles me is the supposed downgrade in power Sparda receives here. In the original he not only took on the legions of hell (supposedly) alone, and then fought Mundus at the prime of his power one on one and managed to seal him away. If Mundus' chest wound is any indication Mundus was heavily scarred by their final battle. How is Sparda so pathetic that Mundus easily overpowers him and puts him in a torture dungeon? What makes it even dumber, is they could have handwaved it by having Sparda's Force Edge contain the bulk of his power, and his choice to retire made him vulnerable to Mundus. Though that would require the war that happened 2000 years ago to have still occurred in some fashion, otherwise there would have been no point in sealing away Force Edge.
For all we know, this Sparda could've been a super badass, but Mundus was still the top dog of Hell. So yeah the demons realize Dante is the son of Mundus' blood brother and the reviled Nephilim race they helped slaughter. So his 'betrayal' is not classic like besting all of Hell in the classic games, but more 'this angel sympathiser lay with an Angel and is trying to bring back the Nephilim, he must be destroyed!'

In fairness to the scene, the "you don't look a day over 12,000" is actually kinda funny. The fuck you exchanges is so over the top in how bad it is, that it ironically becomes funny.

I might be dumb, but I honestly thought all the bad dialogue in this game was intentional. It all seemed very self aware. Like it was being a parody of a DMC game. The actual gameplay being as fun as it was probably helped convince me of that. Am I just an idiot?
When writers use the self-applied claim of writing a 'strong female character', that's almost universally a sign of one of 3 things: 1. The character will be flat, boring and have no defining characteristics. 2. They will be superficially 'empowered' only for all conceptions of said 'empowerment' to evaporate upon scrutiny. Eg. Character is set-up to be a badass warrior, but is immediately rendered helpless when faced with difficulty. 3. They're essentially just a guy with tits. On the occasion that someone actually does write a genuinely strong female character, I doubt they'd define them as such, because they'd be more concerned with just writing a GOOD CHARACTER.
Like really stop and put this into perspective for a moment.... So Trish has this huge thing where she was made as a trap, she was created specifically to lure in Dante as a remnant of his past and she betrays him, but after Dante shows his humanity, she wakes up from her intended purpose, breaks free of her creator, and helps Dante of her own accord, even going off and forming her own business in the process. Then Lady shows up at the tower, she's been screwed over by her father, but she refuses to let him win and she climbs up the entire thing on her own as a normal human in a bloody quest for revenge where, despite being wounded and outmatched, she carries on and even takes on Dante, himself, before finally managing to take out her father once and for all. She completes her quest, but she still feels empty inside and tries to re-invent herself while continuing to hunt demons so that nobody will ever go through what she went through ever again. NEITHER of these were considered 'strong female characters', unlike Kat, who just sits in the background playing support to Dino with her only real motive being that Vergil saved her so she wants to ride his dick while jerking off squirrels. It's almost like these people think that just because they give someone a sad backstory about being saved by a man, that SOMEHOW makes their blank love-interest who does nothing of value a 'strong' character. Kat just doesn't hold a candle to Lady or Trish in any way, shape, or form.
Heather from Silent Hill 3 is still the best female character in a video game. She's feminime and just a normal girl that handles her shit pretty good in a messed up situation.

But that hasn’t stopped the women in the Devil May Cry games from being really cool, well-characterized, and stylish as all hell. Even Kyrie, who doesn’t SHOW UP in a scene that doesn’t involve Nero, is at least an almost cartoonish depiction of a saintly, pure, damsel in distress, so it’s at least a motivated decision. Kat, on the other hand, contributes about as much as Kyrie does, just with more dialogue and a neater gimmick, sticks out like a sore thumb because the promotional material literally pointed her out as a strong woman in the game.
@@theoneandonlymichaelmccormick When you get down to it, there's not a ton of female characters in general and a lot of the female bosses are defined purely by their sexuality in the main games, but even still, I'd argue the characters we do get are about as well realized as Dante himself most of the time. Heck, I'd argue that Lady feels like more of a well-rounded character than Dante in DMC3, being very clearly ticked off and motivated by anger throughout the game while still being competent enough to keep up with the main lead in a proper fight. If that doesn't say something, I don't know what does. Maybe you could call out Trish for being too sexual or something, but I think that there's also a really good argument to be made that, kind-of like Bayonetta, it's good to have solid enough cool, sexy, confident, powerful female characters along with cool, sexy, confident, powerful male leads. I mean, if people are fine with Dante being shirtless with a jacket for all of 3, then having Trish be cool and hot seems pretty fine as well. And then you have DmC that's TERIFIED of that idea and desperate to make sure everyone knows that their female lead DEFINITELY IS NOT THAT. She may be a complete wet fart of a personality, but please don't ascribe any style or coolness at all to her, thank you! She's a "well realized" character who says and does nothing and we'll just tell you how good that is as she just sucks and fails to matter off to the side. Lol.
If we assume that the normal rules apply, God/the powers that be just want humans to inherit the afterlife and aren't too concerned with the demons controlling life in the here and now. Heaven being a home for humans mean that angels have already won the war and the righteous will get their reward in the end. But assuming there is no redemption plan for humans to inherit an afterlife, then they are incredibly lazy to do nothing to overthrow Mundus. What frustrates me though, is we'll never know because the game doesn't care to explain any of this to us.
My guess is that the Angels lost the war and were put to sleep by Mundus and his forces, so when Dante and Vergil cut down Mundus and close off the Hellgate, the spell is broken and they 'wake up' to reignite the war. (that WE HAVE AWOKEN cutscene). WOuld like to see them in a potential DmC2

Dante as a kid could see demons and he told kate he learned to killed him when he got older hence why he was kicked out foster homes because everyone thought he was crazy.
The game plays Dante up as a boring runaway as opposed to some demon killer. We don’t get a sense that Dante spent years killing demons. Judging from the intro, it seems like Dante was just some edgelord party animal who barely fought demons.
The worst things I feel about the bosses in this game is that they barely move at all, they usually just stand around waiting to get hit (Especially for the next boss later). I can only think of two bosses in this game that actually move around more fluidly, and they're the first and the last bosses. Everyone else is just a big brute doing shockwave attacks mostly.
Classic Sparda: Great demon who defeated Mundus, and sealed off the demon world from the human world. Reboot Sparda: Some middle aged man who was banished into bondage torture.
It's not that uncommon to have a succubus be really ugly and inhuman. The explanation or assumption is that they use magic to make themselves look like or make you think they look like Morrigan or something you want.

The entire concept of a Succubus is they're your sexual fantasies come to life, at worst they have no "true form" as they reflect whomever they're currently preying on. Actually, many interpretations I have seen portray a succubus as a hideous creature that changes form to seduce men and steal their life force, sometimes doing this to them while they sleep. It wasn't that strange to me.

Dudes, they explicitly stated in-game that this Sparda was Mundus’s right hand demon; his top-most general. That’s why the demons know him, and why Mundus considered him shacking up with an angel a betrayal.
They literally explained Sparda is Mundus' second in command and his brother. He' still a big deal in this universe. Mundus just owned him really hard in the end.

And it was the catalyst to the entire series of events afterwards. It contextualized the entire series. Here? In Donte's Bizarre Adventure, Sparda is more akin to the Head Supervisor at your office who suddenly quit to go work for a rival company. People act like it's a big deal, but in the grand scheme of things is barely affects anything.

There was an initial engagement, then the Boss would randomly appear in corridors and you had to avoid or fight... and then finally the confrontation where you finally beat it. The boss fight with the supposed Succubus? The characters meet, they start trading insults, they fight and it's over. There is NOTHING in the fight with "Succubus" that makes the death by propeller feel cool.

In this episode Dino gets into an obscenity fight with a slug and wins some Hulk hands for his troubles! What is life!? That said I feel like this game was only one or two steps away from having a Furi type aesthetic and might have been better off for it. I might be wrong though. Like the demons could representations of chaos within the "system" of the world and angels the moderators so Dante, who is both, is an abnormality that exists to keep balance, thus he dives into limbo where both sides exist to restore balance or some such bull. This way the angels and demons are both featured and can be even more alien in nature, as can the aesthetic. It would also make Vergil being anonymous make more sense. Throw in some nice synth jams and better dialogue and you've got...something. I know it doesn't sound much different than what we have here but I could see it working.
What is even more baffling is how the dev's decided that _that_ thing would be a succubus. This game is essentially what a twelve year old boy _thinks_ is cool.
Netflix adaptation is an accurate representation. Another comparison, this reboot is basically for Devil May Cry, what the Super Mario Brothers movie is for the Mario franchise.

Also, during his car ride with Kat, you explicitly see pictures of baby Dino holding decapitated demon heads as he talks about how he discovered that many of the people around him were demons in disguise, who he would then kill. Dude's been fighting demons his entire conscious life, and he hasn't been shy about talking about it.

I’d say them knowing of Sparda makes sense, but not as the legendary demon, but as the traitorous brother of Mundus who committed the crime of associating himself with an angel. So it still makes sense, but in a different way.
In DMC1, 3SE, and 4SE, I swear by the gauntlets because they are fantastic, giving access to easy to use high damage attacks such as Starfall/Killer Bee and even more damaging and risky attacks such as Real Impact, Dragon Breaker, and charging up your moves. Eryx however just feels weak and I only use it to break Eryx-specific barriers. Arbiter is slower but does more than enough damage to make up for it before factoring in Demon Evade.
Great job Dante and Vergil, you stopped the Virility production, now what are you going to do about the millions of cans already made across the world? Are you going to do anything about it? No? Ok then...

So the whole opening encounter with the succubus was a huge point of ridicule among my friends in high school when the demo came out. It's so "How do you do, fellow kids?" that we couldn't take it seriously story-wise. I mean, it played fine and all which is why I really got it, but the dialogue has a faux teenage edge that ruins it.
I know the guys already said it, but this really is the most 2012 game ever made. You can update the game mechanics for 2015, but you can't hide the year it was actually made.

Vergil doesn't engage in these missions because Mundus doesn't know he exists. So, Dante is essentially a pawn; Vergil gets to enact his schemes without putting himself in any immediate danger.
That entire Dante and Succubus conversation is clunky and is so desperately trying to make Dante look witty and “cool.” The swearing is lame and forced along with the fact that the scene doesn’t have much of a flow to it. Taneem says this was the first project he ever wrote and directed and it shows.
I have so many critiques of that scene in particular, because it starts off with what COULD be a set-up (the secret ingredient line, follow it up with, like, a health inspector line or something like that), and then IMMEDIATELY throws it away for a non-sequitur which devolves into "FUCK YOU".
To be fair, Dante isn't an edgy prick throughout the entire game. Especially after meeting Phineas, Dante starts learning that there will be consequences for his actions and things might not turn out the way he thought they would. It's sort of like in Fight Club how Edward Norton's character found a new lease on life after starting the fight club with Tyler only to realize that lifestyle is completely toxic and literally based on mental illness. I've heard Fight Club is one of The Inspirations for this game, which makes sense. Dante isn't Tyler. He's The Narrator. And now that I'm on the subject, did anyone else find it strange that Edward Norton's character was never named in Fight Club?
I honestly don't mind DINO when he talks to the girl. He manages to be a little bit charming, even if it doesn't really last. Almost as if he could have stood to tone it down a bit more, or always be over the top, and that jerking from one to the other wasn't a great idea.
When I hear people say that Bob Bardas' mission/boss fight is the best in the game I like to remind them that the whole fight is you hitting a button and then you just kill him with 2 Arbiter combos
I'm in this weird stage with this game, in which I remember the next two weapons, but I cannot for the life of me tell you if I ever cared for them. All I remember is that by the time you get the Coyote, almost everything interesting the game can throw at you has already passed. I can't quite recall another game that I just kept giving chances to, for no merit of its own.
I remember this boss being disgusting, but I completely forgot about the...uh...how to phrase this...the "hood" folding back to reveal the....let's just say "fleshy bump". Man, they really felt that this game needed an identity that screamed FOR ADULTS
Well, they are calling him Son of Sparda exactly because of what he did, he fell in love with an angel and betrayed his demon brothers and now he fell from grace. "The son of Sparda" heavily implies "son of the traitor", they are shaming Dante in this game and i think that's one cool difference between this and the og games: instead of living up to the legend, he is trying to build up his own, that's neat
Dante was never trying to live up to his fathers legend in the og series, he doesnt even use the sword of sparda except when he confronts Mundus, you mixed that up with Vergils motivation
7:21 Yeah, the one demon that was the right hand man to the boss of all of these demons and one demon that is notable for betraying them and their leader by falling in love with an Angel, yeah that guy is in no way inseparable and kind of famous to Demons. The fact Mundus, THEIR BOSS, hated sparda more than anyone and vigorously reminds everyone and has put a huge hit on Dantes head now for years, means it makes sense for Demons to not be aware of all this.... yeah...
DmC Sparda: the right hand man to Mundus that stuck his dick in Angel puss and got his balls tortured for all eternity for it, he didn't even seem to fight back all that much considering that he was the one to escape with the kids while Eve was the one to stall Mundus and the demons before Sparda was also captured. DMC Sparda: Single Handedly defeated all of hell, kicked the shit out of Mundus, sealed the gates to earth and was so powerful that every weapon he was ever involved with had amazing power that could grant its user greater abilities than that of most high ranking Demons. When you actually compare the two they don't measure up at all, so it really doesn't make much sense to have the demons really care who the fuck Dantes father was. If anything they should really just care about Eve considering that she is the Angel that screwed them over in the first place.

That's the point we are making, in this universe he is a nobody who is only important because he stuck his dick in an Angel and got her pregnant. Eve herself by comparison is far more important considering that she was the one that gave birth to the Nephilim and went to fend off Mundus and his demons over Sparda allowing her children to escape while Sparda just got captured some how with out so much of a fuss. That's the problem we are pointing out here, it doesn't make much sense for literally every demon to be shouting "SEED OF SPARDA!? OH DAMN THAT semi-horny demon that got laid that one time, FOR ALL ETERNITY! HE FUCKED US ALL OUT OF literally nothing considering that even after he had kids we've still been ruling the world care freely while he has been getting tortured in hell.... AND THAT WHORE EVE!" Like, original Sparda had a very good reason to be hated by all of demons in the past because he literally killed thousands of them and trapped them in hell, this Sparda didn't do much of anything to piss off anyone besides Mundus personally so really the only one who should be cursing his name should be his own brother Mundus.
Yeah, Ninja Theory sounded really dumb when trying to one-up the original Devil May Cry series by comparing and talking down on it. They tried to make there's sound good when they massively failed in character and story development. Gameplay seems fun though, I'll give them that.
I don't get the point of demon swearing. swearing is supposed to be saying something blasphemous and demons nature itself is blasphemous so it's kind of like putting frosting on icing it's redundant. It's almost try hard in a way.
I get what you're saying. i like more classiness in my demon's interpretation too. Besides with the demon AND the main character swearing a lot at each other like in here, it usually just become a pissing contest with nothing snarky/smart in their exchange
Swearing feels like only lowly demons would resort to it, they are trivial sins that don't really mean much of anything and are completely harmless in of themselves just like a small weak demon would be. It would be something that a low demon would use to make it seem more intimidating or dangerous than it actually is. Now a really scary demon that actually has power? That should ether be classy or completely animalistic depending on what kind of sinning they personally represent. Personally I like a Devil dressed up in a suit and tie that seems chill while every single word he says can be twisted with out you even knowing it, stringing you along for some bigger more disastrous purpose you won't even see possibly in your life time. But I also like the idea of the more primal demon, where it is literally just driven by it's sins as one would be to its own instincts, the damage it could cause being purely physical while never caring about the little details like emotional suffering or long term destruction, because it can simply end everything in a bloody rampage of war and death. Demons, Devils, and even sins are really nice concepts to use for designing stories or characters, but DmC decide "Nah, fuck the meaning behind everything we use like Nephilim or Succubus, lets just make everything use naughty words to sound cool!"
