The fact that coach Kuso started saying "NO" to Tommy Lee, he wanted him to realize that martial arts is not about killing or taking revenge, but it's about having mercy and compassion against one's opponent. This film really portrays what martial arts is about.
He was actually in the running for it for the '95 movie. It was between him and Robin Shou . Supposedly Rhee give a good audition and account of himself but the producers saw something in Shou that stood out more.
Another thing, afterwards, Dae Han makes the touching gesture of offering himself as Tommy's brother...so Phillip Rhee could have broke character and said, " Dude...YOU ARE MY BROTHER "
I was in junior grade when i first saw this great movie. And this inspired me to join TKD later under korean coaches. To Phillip & Simon Rhee kamsamida!
I thoroughly enjoyed the parts where they trained, especially the Korean team, very raw and very focused sessions. I'm no martial artist, I just grew up watching this stuff, very encouraging and self disciplined. just as life. "you can be the best of the best." -James Earl Jones-
Phillip Rhee is underrated MA. When you think about JCVD and Phillip Rhee side by side there is no comparison. Better technique, movement and skill in this fight scene alone surpasses anything done by JCVD despite being choreographed
Yes, in an interview, Phillip stressed that counter-balance the emphasis on kicks, development in hapkido ( throws ) and kickboxing ( for tge development of hands ) were added

To save a life in defeat is to earn victory and honor within. Your brother too was a great fighter. I deeply regret your loss. And i offer myself as your brother.
This is one of the greatest films ever... Such a well acted and performed film. So many great messages in it about Desire, passion, pain mercy forgiveness and friendships..❤
This movie was so damn good as a kid watching this it felt and looked so real to me all the matches did and I was so sad they lost but how it ended was gr8 awesome movie
@@luckycali13 Well, if James Earl Jones just told him he’s not supposed to let anyone tell him he didn’t win that match, and the referee just told him he lost it, what should he do? Fight the referee?
@@hughmanatee7657 he was meaning he couldn't find back and basically allowed him to finish him but he decided not to because he was gonna kill em so he won in that aspect
Agreed. I don't know why Eric Roberts didn't like this movie. He even got top billing above James Earl Jones for this film when Phillip Rhee clearly was the star and focus of it.
That 'NO' still resonates in my brain to this day, clear as a bell. Still remember watching this one and the sequel on VHS. Edit: the only sequel that mattered anyway, part 2.
It's still bring a tear to my eyes even now watching it 30 odd years later, so much raw passion emotion and power in this classic martial arts movie, Tommy Lee proved to really be, the very best of the best.....
When i was younger, i didnt understand why Tommy didnt hit him. Now that im older, i completely understand. Anything he landed would have most likely killed him at that point.
For me it was hard to understand why didnt want to at least win the tournament but now understand that the match between him and Dae Han was more important than simply winning or losing. This movie is everything lol I love this movie
Mercy is for the weak. After all, the original Cobra Kai dojo was filmed at Jun Chong's North Hollywood school. Both the Rhee brothers and Thomas Ian Griffith (Terry Silver) were students of Chong. Plus, this was supposed to be "full-contact" not point sparring. Doesn't make sense for him to give him a love tap.
Now I understand why this film is called the best of the best. Because only the best of the best can sacrifice a win in order to lose and by doing this they actually WIN!
