The fact that there were so many disagreements on this episode goes to show how much parity there is amongst the films this year. There are locks, but those last few spots could go in a number of directions! Excited to see the Best Directors revisited because that's another wacky category.

Seeing you three together is my favorite part of every awards season, and I look forward to it every year. Thank you guys for making these videos. Babylon is currently at 69% on Rotten Tomatoes, almost the exact same score as The Whale's 68%. I agree that there isn't a 1-to-1 comparison between critics and Academy voters, but it shows that Babylon is divisive. For now, I think both Glass Onion and The Woman King are in, with Babylon out. It makes my day when I see a new video from you all. Looking forward to more!
@sebastiano728
@sebastiano728 Год назад
Really don't see Glass Onion with a chance, unfortunately. Maybe in screenplay. I think Babylon is a safe bet. 18:59 I feel the same way, Avatar: WoW's technological contribution plays a big role in its significance, same as Top Gun: Maverick. The Academy has recognized James Cameron's effort to constantly innovate the technology of cinema time and time again. His films have a total of 19 Oscar wins, mostly in technical crafts. Average film fans are unaware that this is the main reason a film like Citizen Kane is considered one of the most pivotal films in film history, for its technical transcendence and contribution to the art.

With all due respect, Jeff seems very out of touch with this film year. Empire of Light?! "Not a strong year for film?!" Something no one's expecting like RRR? Put your ear to the ground sir. RRR has been the talk of this race for the past two weeks if not before that. Colman is EOL's only hope for an above the line nomination and even that seems to be fading. Finally, this is the strongest film year in quite some time. I am not trying to be insensitive I just feel a lot of his takes are just not what's in the ether right now...

Granted, EEAaO has some really silly things going on in it... but by then end ALL those silly things somehow contribute to the emotional core of the film... I think eve the older Academy members will see that... I think the boring choice would be the Fablemans (great film, just a boring, simple choice for best picture) I think Banshees is probably the RIGHT choice (Its gonna get 4 acting noms and I think Colin, Condin will win in their catagories) However, Everything, Everywhere all at Once would be the daring pick. It would be a huge step forward in accepting a certain kind of film making as REAL art and worth a damn

My top ten (so far, I have not seen Decision to Leave, Till, Blonde, or most that have not released yet) 10. Women Talking (really well made, only weakness is I’m not sure what the cinematography added; I think I would like it more as an audio drama) 9. Nope (completely solid and fun, with some amazing shots and moments) 8. The Menu (I do worry about how many people agree with what the chef did, imo his acts of violence that he claims have meaning when they clearly don’t is part of the theme, but still a very fun script meticulously put together). 7. All Quiet on the Western Front (amazing war movie which really shows the humanity lost and partially lost due to war) 6. The Woman King (held back by a pg13 rating and some questionable historic accuracy, it was still a moving and powerful blockbuster with fun action; I just wish they hadn’t sanitized it so much so it could be genuinely great) 5. The Fabelmans (the scenes in the movie are half the story; what makes this movie meaningful is knowing that it was made by that kid, so it’s very existence is the ending of the story) 4. Tar (incredible character study of power and its impact on everyone around it; truly great) 3. The Northman (Eggers makes the movies that past societies would make if they had access to modern filmmaking; this glimpse into another time’s understanding of classic revenge is brilliant) 2. RRR (This is what cinema should be: fun and heartfelt, epic and intimate: genuinely a testament to what cinema can do) 1. Pearl (the most meaningful commentary on modern society, all the more meaningful because it shows that none of it is new; Mia Goth is a master of her craft and that her performance is being overlooked is criminal; other than Blanchett, nobody played such a complex character even close to as well this year) Most aren’t in the race, but that would be my top ten, with Pearl as my winner for how meaningful it is today.

Does RRR have a chance of making the cut? Loved Jack Sneider take on it. First time, someone is saying upfroot, what crap that movie was. All those critics who loved it, prasied it, blogged about it... I feel like they just did to get views and re-share of the same by mass Indian Population. Being Indian, watched that movie, I know what crap that was. Recently it won many awards and accolades, which raises real doubts on those jury members/critics/etc. There are lots of great Indian movies(not specific Bollywood movies) which don't even get that recognition and hype that RRR is getting, which are sometimes for sure worthy of that Trophy.

It will be a proud moment for India. #Even if that movie Wins, is it the right movie to Win or even to get Nominated in First Place? -> Not At All. Hope you will understand, if you know or have seen good cinema. ✌🏼

People dislike the truth-tellers, and Jeff stubbornly sticks to the truth, to the practical reality of this business while others' vision is blurred by emotion and idealism. I have to admire Jeff (though Glass Onion and Knives Out rock).

I understand you guys are picking who you think WILL get nominated/win and I’m sure your predictions will be quite accurate. But I’ve seen a number of the potential nominated movies this year and it leaves me confused why the two movies I personally loved most this year, The Batman and Nope, aren’t getting more buzz for awards.
@dusterrant9332
@dusterrant9332 Год назад
Even if you love Nope, you have to recognize that's an extremely divisive film. It's also in a genre the Oscars generally hate, horror, and it's narrative is it's closer on par with Us than Get Out when it comes to Peele's work.

In no particular order, there are 5 films that seem pretty much a lock for a nom: Everything Everywhere, Banshees, Top Gun, Tar, Fablemans,. At this moment I'd guess these are likely for 4 of the remaining 5 spots: Avatar, Elvis, Babylon, Women Talking.. Last spot is really up in the air- Aftersun, Triangle of Sadness, Pinocchio, Glass Onion, RRR, Woman King or ? Probably depends on how they are marketed between now and voting time. I don't hear anyone having any interest in She Said. And yeah, I don't care about seeing it - I followed the story in real time and don't need to re-visit that so soon. Babylon is divisive in early reviews, but with 10 slots to fill, this big budget film with great craft elements will still likely get a nom. Personally rooting for EEAO - really groundbreaking film work.

Not a big fan of EEAAO, but thumbs up because 1. I can see a widespread excitement for it, and do appreciate its originality. 2. Great analysis (imo) on your top ten list. Btw, I personally think Tàr is incredibly well constructed and acted, so I’ll be pulling for it. Cheers.

Avatar actually helps Top Gun win Best Picture because it shows the big difference between two cinematic popular movies . Top Gun has 96% critics choice while Avatar 80% and maybe dropping even more. Top Gun has both - story and cinematic theater experience and most beloved. I am Team Top Gun Maverick and hoping it WINs both PGA and Oscars!

I have to agree with Jeff on "Pinocchio" , while the world building and animation is wonderful I feel like I've seen better stop motion over all. The creativity of the designs is what really sells it. The reason I find it easy to turn off is I find Pinocchio the character to be incredibly grating in this version and some of the music in it (one song in particular) is also just off putting. I kept thinking about it for a couple days after the viewing and decided I ultimately liked it but the reason I wasn't sure was those elements I mentioned. I could see it getting nominated but I just don't think it's anywhere near a masterpiece.
