The tightest race this season is who will win the “Best Pronunciation of Barry Keoghan” Award
@sebastiano728
@sebastiano728 Год назад
Last week I backed Perri in the debate over whether Polley deserves a nomination. However, Jeff wins this week in the Best Picture conversation. All Quiet will certainly get nominated, and Glass Onion is far down the pecking order. I would sooner expect The Woman King or RRR to get it, Jeff's winning $20 next week, no doubt in my mind.
@mabusestestament

Not that I have faith in The Academy to begin with, but whatever little faith I have will be gone if Glass Onion will get a best picture nom. If that gets one you can just give any random movie one. I do hope RRR gets one. And I do think The Woman King has a good chance because diversity eventhough that movie is just wrong; just pick Wakanda Forever instead if you have to, eventhough nominating MCU movies is another low 😊

Jeff's going to be doing some gloating come Tuesday, All Quiet is definitely getting nominated for Best Picture. It also has the chance to be the nomination leader Oscar morning. I'm surprised Perri and Scott didn't even have it on their list. Ever since the Academy has expanded it's membership there's been an international film in best picture. Think Parasite and Drive My Car, both won international feature and were nominated for best picture and Parasite even won. Also The Whale is very likely to get in, it got a PGA nomination which hardly goes for indie films which just shows you how strong that film is. As sad as it it may be both Glass Onion and Women Talking have missed crucial guild nominations and have shown that they are vulnerable, I personally think Triangle of Sadness will get in over those two. This has to be the best discussion since FYC debuted. I think the oscars opening the best picture to 10 spots is a great way of putting something that people are really passionate about. Hence if Perri chose 'Women Talking' out of her lot to get in and Jeff got with 'All Quiet on the Western Front'; Scott shud have got his pick for 'RRR'. That wud leave Glass Onion but it wud be a popular 2nd for Perri and Scott but not the most passionate ones.

Perri I would like to know. First I do agree I would put a woman director up there but Why are you implying you can’t see a future where no women are nominated.. is it going to be like this every year then. A woman must be at least one nominee no matter what?? And how exactly does that create more opportunities? And why isn’t this extending to other categories too. Do you care if all the stunts, makeup, Editing etc nominees are all men or all women.. ? if all director nominees were women would you insist on a male director getting a slot? And you said you love top gun but every category it comes up in, director, screenplay, actor you push back.. so what do you want it to get nominated for then? how come only rich & powerful positions get the demand for gender equality?? While it’s great topics about assault are being adressed I do think it’s fair to say a “men talking” movie of similar quality but about a group of men talking about their trauma from women wouldn’t get the same support from You or anyone in Hollywood? Do you want just any woman to get a director nomination or Sarah Polly specifically? And why? None of these are in bad faith. I’m not looking for a debate or anything like that but I’m genuinely curious.? This seems like a important issue to you so could you answer these questions..?

This was recorded before BAFTA nominations but Williams missed there as well. So this makes the second ceremony where Williams was omitted in which no category confusion occurred. For the Oscars she is going to cannibalize her own vote and receive votes in both Supporting Actress and Actress. If she couldn't get in when there was no possibility of vote splitting I do not see her getting in now.

Women Talking is good but...I'd take Aftersun every day of the week if I had to take a woman directed film of the past year to get a director nom. I also loved Happening, that's definitely far from the conversation but also another very well directed movie by a female filmmaker. I agree with Jeff, as good as the movie is there's just more unique and elaborate films I would place in a top 5 for direction this year. This was a really strong year for direction, it is too bad a woman might not make it in but overall that aspect has gotten big strides in recent years with women winning the award outright, which is great. also...Triangle of Sadness not nominated for Best Picture...what?!

I can’t believe I’m saying this but I Sorta agree with Perri on director in a sense. Let me explain- If a literal MRA group can pick Sarah Polley as a top 5 director (IDK why) Perri maybe u can enlighten me on that. Then I don’t see why the alleged progressive Hollywood can’t. Because and I’m taking a big leap on this… I think Perri truly does want to treat female directors like every other director just that she thinks they aren’t numerous enough. And My biggest leap of faith.. if the situations were reversed and even tho 4 male directors made great films yet none were nominated and it was all female nominees I think Perri would say the same things she is about women directors. And if that’s true That is something I respect immensely. Yes this is me saying this.. Tho to me women talking seems like a “man bad women good” screed (haven’t seen it tho) I do think a woman should be up there.

This conversation was so fun. I really appreciate your passion and your real debate, having honest conversations about your feelings on these movies and what the nominations might be. Perri, I agree w/ you on the women-directed movies - and because those movies were good and should have been recognized, no matter the gender of the person making the movie. Part of the reason these movies are not in the conversation is because of the topic of the movies. Still, I hope for some surprises.
@thrawncaedusl717

I’m curious, who would be your top 5 directors? Mine are Eggers (who should be in the conversation, definitely over Prince-Bythewood, who made a movie in the same genre which most agree was worse), Aronofsky (who made the same kind of movie as Polley, and, this one is more open to debate, I think made it in a much more cinematically interesting way), Fields, Park Chan-wook, and Ti West (brilliant horror movie that should also get much more awards love).
@senseofpeace2
@senseofpeace2 Год назад
@@thrawncaedusl717 Hello. First, I love all the movies you chose. I agree w/ you on Aronofsky & think his directing was amazing in The Whale. I also think the Whale will get more nominations that ppl think. Pls note how it is loved by audiences, though not the critics. While I loved the Northman, I thought Woman King was more difficult to direct and film, so I would go with Prince-Bythewood. Pearl is my movie & I want more recognition for it. Still, I don't think Ti West is top 5. I go with McDonagh, Aronofsky, Field, Prince-Bythewood, and the Daniels (for their wild ride, which I did not enjoy at all, but had some sense among the chaos). I do love your taste in movies.
@thrawncaedusl717
@thrawncaedusl717 Год назад
@@senseofpeace2 I really like your taste in movies too! I also was not personally a fan of EEAAO, but can accept giving it director (I would never give it screenplay; I can’t get over how it uses euphemisms to downplay the daughter being suicidal, then focuses on giving the borderline emotionally abusive mother catharsis. I actually hate that movie, though Hsu gave probably my favorite performance of the year). Actually, where I’d probably disagree with you most is on McDonaugh, as I thought the premise of Banshees was fantastic, but did not love how the story was told. I wanted The Woman King to be one of my top (and I do have it in my top ten, just not my top 5), but that is a movie that needs to be rated R. You need to really see the blood and brutality of both slavery and war to understand what was actually at stake here (I thought how they handled sexual assault was fine and would not want that to get any more graphic). It felt like it played too safe (which given the box office was probably the right choice, but was disappointing from an artistic standpoint), which is why I think The Northman is better. There are absolutely arguments for women directors this year (I haven’t even seen Aftersun yet, which I am very hopeful ends up in my top 5), but at the same time, this feels like a year where a completely fair list can legitimately exist with no women on it.
@fromomelastocarcosa3575
@fromomelastocarcosa3575 Год назад
On merit for me it would be Park for Decision, Eggers for Northman, Daniels, Charlotte Welles, and Berger. More pragmatically, Eggers has no chance and I dont think Park has either. Field and one of thr big budgeters (TG-M or Avatar) would make for the best shortlist I think. Banshees and Aftersun are my films of the year, but in a stacked contest I dont think direction is what makes Banshees. For me Welles should be the clear winner but it doesnt have the visibility: of the artsier movies The Whale has some pull with the general audiences (I find it imdulgent and saccharine tbh, but I can pretend there isnt a lot of craft there)

If there is only one category, I do think giving a moderate advantage to ambitious films makes sense (degree of difficulty is considered in many judging based sports like gymnastics), but separating the two out might make sense? It was a old Hollywood style leading man performance he gave. Moments that equally recall a young Denzel Washington or even a young Sidney Poitier at times. Even a little of the nuance and method attention of a young Marlon Brando in his performance too. Just downright sad nobody is considering him at all not even as a possible contender. A lot of the problem too I believe is Devotion was extremely highly overshadowed by Top Gun Maverick obviously. That’s why i still believe they should have released Devotion in 2023 instead of the same year as Top Gun. That way by the time it came out late 2023, Jonathan would be a huge movie star coming off of Ant Man, Creed 3 and Magazine Dreams earlier in the year, and he easily would have had much more momentum and support

In my opinion, supporting actress is the hardest to predict for noms. So many wild cards. My predictions are: Angela Bassett, Hong Chau, Kerry Condon, Jamie Lee Curtis and Dolly de Leon. I don’t think Stephanie Hsu will make it in unfortunately. I have a very weird feeling that a dark horse to get in is Nina Hoss. I just have a weird feeling on that.

So you don’t want sentimentality to come in to play for Austin Butler with the unexpected passing of Lisa Marie Presley and yet want to give Brendan Fraser the Oscar for sentimental reasons. Lisa Marie did say that Austin’s portrayal of her father was one of accuracy and respect. Her approval of Butler’s portrayal as well as Pricilla’s could push him to the finish line. And btw, the elder members of the academy could give most of the awards to ELVIS. The only way that BF wins best actors is if that THE WHALE wins best makeup but with ELVIS in the category also might be challenging. If ELVIS wins best makeup then Austin will for sure win best actor

Trust me bro. RRR is getting a lot of buzz in USA. This Jeff guy is stupid and try to force his opinion on others. Critics choice win will help it a lot. It has a real chance at best picture nomination. Indian Film Federation really blew up a chance by not selecting RRR as entry for Oscar's best international feature film. That could have a sure shot win.

Well its raining predictions. But since you guys started the trend I am going to share my thoughts. Well for Best Picture - I have not seen one of the favorites The Fabelmans yet so I do not know. But from the rest I have seen, I think my choice would be between Triangle of Sadness and Banshees of Irishin. I have heard every single critic just talk about Everything Everywhere but in my opinion that is not up to the standards of the two. It does begin very interestingly but after a good start it just extends its crazy situations without any connecting thread. The final act is really stretched. Its ok for a movie to have a crazy situation or idea but there has to be one common thread to connect them. I do not think Everything Everywhere has that connecting thread. Its about a story of a woman and her relationship with her husband and daughter. But that base and about how she could lose them due to what is happening in other "worlds" is kind of lost as the narrative progresses. I have seen only half of Tar, and I think it kind of aims to repeat what last years Best International Picture Drive My Car did. There you had a theatre director and how he is recovering from the loss of his wife and how going to Hiroshima to direct a play changes his situation. Here you have music composer dealing with several personal issues as she prepares for a grand symphony But Tar is really dialogue heavy, and as general viewer I found myself really straining to follow the narrative because its so dialogue heavy. I understand some movies have a serious subject but at the end of the day movie watching is an experience not a test where you are really forced to watch with great concentration. Now I could only watch half of Tar but its not unique or precise as the Best Picture winner should be. Elvis, again I could watch half. Though more of lack of time. I think Elvis gets its world building right. The lead actor Austin Butler certainly does a great impression of him. And Tom Hanks as the manager is an interesting angle. But as one viewer reviewed the movie becomes more about Tom Hanks than Elvis himself. And certainly there is a strong "woke" angle which is definitely forced into the movie. Not a movie with any clear idea. I honestly hope a movie like X or even The Forgiven makes it nomination list. They may not be serious contenders at winning but they are definitely better made and have more depth than an Elvis or Everything Everywhere in my opinion.
