I always advise people about purchasing a boat and the hidden cost (insurance, fuel, storage and maintenance), but you re right, you have to look at how often you are going to be able to use it due to your work, where you live and the weather. I learned my lesson a on twin outboard boat I had where I did not take the weather seriously, thought I was going to be swimming with an SOS. The seas can become terrifying pretty quickly in the tropics.

Yes, I hear you. We live in different Worlds , literally. I am an old man now (75) I lost interest in fast riding boats years ago, but then again I do not have to go far for good fish, as a matter of fact I often sit on my boat in the marina and catch dinner. My boat is 26ft x 10ft , weighs 6 ton and is powered by a 3cyl yanmar. She cruisers at 9 knots. I live at the bottom of Australia in a small fishing town and my boat is permanently moored in the marina. That costs $1300 pa (Seniors discount) I pay $320 pa for liability insurance. She uses about 2 ltrs per hour.(dont know what that is in your language). We have some of the roughest waters in tho World down here but I only fish nice days, and office hours. I fish for Snapper, King George Whiting and Gummy Shark. I also do a lot of Squid fishing for food and bait. Cheers.......

Another perspective -- many years ago I asked an old man what he liked to fish for. His answer was "whatever is biting." You are fixated on offshore saltwater fishing, primarily Bimini. Florida is full of lakes and rivers your boat is not too big for. Buy foul weather gear. Put a Bimini up on your aft deck with side curtains to stay out of the rain. Something wrong with crappie, sunfish, bluegills or catfish? Easing along a river, tied off to a stump, sipping coffee and enjoying the rain. Hookup a TV through a Hotspot or starlink, watch the big game whe keeping an eye on your bobber or line. Get mosquito netting for the back. There's fishing to be done, you just want to chase certain species and fish a different way. You don't need a 100k boat to do any of the above!
@OutOnTheReef
@OutOnTheReef 5 месяцев назад
Very wise words, captain. I'd just been spoiled with deep sea fishing. And I do have a lake nearby but it's full Of hydraula grass So it's very hard to navigate a lot of the lakes here. Florida have that disease and there's plenty of grass to get caught in your propellers. That's why I don't go to the lakes neared by my house. I could burn my engine out but I see your point. Freshwater is another option. Thank you, captain. For the awesome suggestion and for taking your time to explain to me you're awesome. Thank you see you on the next video👍🛥⚓️

You are the voice of reason and sanity once again, Captain. I recently made an offer on a 23' Parker and was told to leave the premises. Two weeks later the salesman called me and asked me to come back to try to make a deal on the same boat. I told him my previous offer was off the table due to the weather and falling prices, and because of the way he treated me previously. I could picture him squirming on the other end of the line. I'm sure I'll hear from him again soon.

Absolutely spot on captain. Definitely an enlightening video for the ones looking to invest in a new boat. I upgraded from a 20 foot cc to a brand new 26 foot center console twin outboards put all the necessary equipment and electronics on it in order to be out farther for better fishing and eventually crossing to Bimini . Fortunately I blessed to be able to pay cash for the new boat as not to pay interest and owe anyone, and it is harder and harder to get out when I’m able to get to go. So I watch my boat sit on the lift looking good but that’s all. I love my boat but it’s an expense to not even be able to use it. I agree with you, the weather is definitely changing. Hopefully the summer will improve things. Safe boating to you captain. Hopefully will hear “Prop clear “ soon!

Boating has always been expensive but it all depends on where you live and what you enjoy doing on your boat. Here in Florida, boating season is year round. We LOVE our Cobia 220!! My wife and I can easily launch at any local river for a relaxed cruise and dinner at one of the many marina restaurants. With the bad weather keeping us inshore this time of year, we still get out to the intercoastal waters for a day of fishing and also a make shrimping trips several times a month . This is part of the reason why having the biggest boat is not always the best option. Bigger boats are better suited for open seas but you are actually more limited on where you can use your boat.
@OutOnTheReef
@OutOnTheReef 4 месяца назад
That is very true, captain. That's why I don't get anything bigger than 21 feet. Because I can go in shallow waters. 2 feet of waters and I can move my boat around with no problems. I am the same way as you thinking captain. That's why I love to use my boat. In the Bahamas for the shallow waters where big boats cannot enter, I'm always there. And keeping joined up awesome boat you have captain.👍⚓️

Boating and fishing has always been my passion but as a low earning guy still I never got a loan on a boat, always purchased used, redone and sold to buy bigger, started with a wooden 18' Dori with only sails from my dad and ended with a 30' express taking the family for up to a week at a time. I am not wealthy and refuse to get a loan for leisure so rebuilding was the only way for me to do it. During pandemic a lot of people worked from home, this was a great period for a project boat so sold and purchased another one then for very low price. 25k of boat, 25k of new equipment (top electronics are expensive) and lot's of labor, same boat resales between 75 and 85k, all the cash invested came from previous boat sale. To be noted that boat prices varies with state of economy but not all of them to the same degree, a 3 piece construction with 24/25 deg deadrise at transom (only a handful of builders) is not so much subject to fluctuations, what's rare is expensive. It is said that 28' is the good size (after considering all factors) down here in FL but if on a trailer that starts to be really heavy and cumbersome. a 26' is easy to trailer with a half ton truck and let's you decide where to launch even driving across FL just for that special day the wife and kids want to spend in Marco island. I understand not everyone knows how to rebuild or just renovate a boat but plenty videos nowadays to show how it's done and it's fairly easy to learn, time consuming is the biggest drawback. When starting a project like that in order to spend as much time available as possible I recommend a small hangar or barn or at least somewhere protected from rain and fitted with good lighting to work at night. (dreadful daylight saving time makes that it's dark already when you get home from work) The pleasure, pride and satisfaction of sailing a boat one has redone himself is second to none. As always thanks for your video Capt.

Wow, captain, I thought about remodeling boats, but like you say, you have to spend a lot of time getting to know the products that you're using. It's awesome that you know how to do all that, and you're right. You definitely need a big garage or a barn to do. All these things do the weather. So true weather here in my area of Homestead, FL, has been at its worst lately. And if you're by yourself, it's OK if you can handle a moderate chop, but with a crew/family on board, it changes your mindset. We just need to hang in there until all this bad weather goes away, hopefully soon.

Excellent points. Having very little expendable income I bought a 30 year old 23' Cuddy Cabin on a great trailer that spent its life in the Gulf for $800 and by the time I'm finished renovating it will have spent another $4 or $5K plus was able to buy a used 150 Merc Saltwater EFI for another $5K. I never had a boat before and had zero idea about the cost of new boats and feel lucky that I'm able to do this reno with cash...it's just taking me a couple years. We just want to go in Lake Ponchartrain and Maurepas to catch crabs and do a little fishing so rough ocean weather won't be a problem.

Some add'l thoughts: 1. Buying a relatively new, used boat is more affordable & offers better value than new. Ex: I am buying a 1 1/2 yr old Cutwater, 78 engine hrs with 100 hr service done, for 26% less than the same boat new. 2. An experienced surveyor will fully reveal the condition of a relatively new'ish smaller boat; they just aren't that complicated. 3. If you enjoy using a boat, then you don't have to make long passages to distant islands in bad weather -or- let it sit on its trailer. Our captain could be taking his Crooked Pilothouse to Charlotte Harbor or Caledesi Is. near Clearwater and enjoy it in protected waters. That's the beauty of a trailerable boat. 4. His last point bears repeating: Don't hurt yourself financially just to have a newer or bigger boat. Getting on the water is what matters, as does your continued financial well being.

Good break down of the real cost of owning a boat, many people simply look at the cost of a boat in determining whether or not they can afford it without consideration of associated cost, many of which will continue through the life of the boat. Your breakdown of cost should be an eye opener to many and yet there are even more cost than those covered by you, repairs, maintenance etc… I too get frustrated when conditions dictate staying inshore. I have a Pilot House similar to yours but a bit larger (25 ft.) and it frustrates me to no end having the boat sit due to weather conditions but much like you safety comes first. I managed to relieve much of my frustration by purchasing a smaller boat (18 ft.) to use inshore, it has somewhat helped but I still prefer blue water. I am fortunate enough that I owe no money on either boat… and still there are expenses. Great video Capt…. Hold tight the weather will break.

Hello, captain. And that is an awesome option to have a smaller paid vote, so you can enjoy inshore fishing. And yes, great coin. A lot of people don't see a long time pain about then you see what they can afford, which is a big mistake. Because at the end of the payment, you will have a huge expense that you didn't know. I guess it's just people are trying to be positive and ignorant so they can get what they want. But we should do that to our families budget That is if we don't have it, and thanks for your positive words. Captainand soon I will be out there again when it comes down. Capt ! I didn't make it one minute into this before I had to say something..... You have a trolling motor. That boat isn't prefer for inshore but it is PLENTY good to spot lock off a nice grass line, dock, rocks and start slinging lures..... Okay... I'm going back to finish watching the rest of the clip.

You're awesome, buddy. Thank you for your great suggestion. And I do have a Lake close to my house, but it's full growing weeds. And it overheats my engine. The Lake that lived nearby has a disease. And it's just almost impossible to navigate. That's why I don't go to fresh waters because I can burn my outboard with a weed. But thank you for the great suggestion. Captain and for watching see you on the next video Prop Clear

While I think your point of anchoring up on weed lines, docks, etc...are valid alternatives for most of us I don’t think the same holds true for the Capt. Anyone who has watched his videos know he’s not all about fishing, sure he does it and I’m sure he enjoys it but his focus goes far beyond fishing. He simply loves the sea and all things that go with it, exploring the islands, diving the reefs, sharing his adventure with others they may never have the opportunity to do themselves. He shares the knowledge he has gained with others so they can become better seamen and that’s a great thing, so I don’t expect that he will go out in search of weed lines, docks and the like inshore. I suspect he will simply wait out the weather while planning out his next adventure… and I like many others will be on stand by waiting for his next adventure.

Diatribe ?… Are you serious?… I was simply giving my opinion as you gave yours, I certainly didn’t intend to cause you butt heart… But being that the pain is already there let me expand a little on my opinion. For future reference if you care to be taken serious in giving your opinion you should never start a post by saying, and I quote “I didn't make it one minute into this before I had to say something..... “ Such a statement would indicate to anyone with a modicum of intelligence you are a keyboard sniper jumping on any chance to discredit a video or the opinions of others. The Captains video was very informative to many who watch his channel, and most who watch and comment on his videos and watch more than just the first minute as you so proudly stated you did. Most would watch the entire video and absorb the information the Capt. was trying to share which he did a damn good job of doing, if you had watched the video you would have known the video was not about fishing but addressing more the associated cost of owning a boat. For the record, the captains reply to you was a well measured reply from a well measured man… I however am not so well measured and I hope your butt is puckering as you read this… Now that’s a diatribe@@francus7227

I agree with you captain. The weather "thing" may smooth out but mid tier boat builders are going to take a bath in the next year or 2 since boats are and have always been luxuries. Consolidation will be a big factor in the next cycle after builders shed their floor plans. We are entering a new phase/consumer market where upscale luxuries will be unattainable for much of the real middle class. Just look at Big 3 truck dealers. No matter what you here about pricing those F350/F450/F550 Platinum trucks are all spoken for by business owners and real upper middle class consumers. The middle class is being priced out of housing, cars and now boats and will continue to be for years imo. Brunswick and other builders will more than likely adjust and develop mid 80's to late 80's Bayliner boats for the masses who still want to get out on the water. Going to be rough sledding for alot of mid tier boat builders/dealers in the next year or 2.

Captain, you said it right, and that's exactly what I also. I'm seeing that soon. They're gonna get a huge hit. So they must prepare and lower their prices if they can to keep them consumer's happy. And yes, the middle class is lacking on affording. The things that we always have been available to purchase. And thanks for your awesome Comment captain. It makes a lot of sense and very wise words. Thank you and see you hopefully in the next video captain. And hanging there we will survive this, prop clear cap.

Hi Capt.... I'm sorry to hear the weather down your way has been bad. We've had occasional bad weather, but nothing unusual for winter. Even so, there has not been an entire week that folks around here have not gone out fishing. Since your favorite fishing grounds are the Bahama's which require you crossing the Gulf Stream, twice each trip, weather plays a much more important rule for you. Your fishing-grounds are more adventurous and more reliant on calm weather. In the past you have made some great videos of places you fished in Florida. Weather would be less of an issue in those places. I understand you prefer the Bahama's, but Florida-Fishing is better than No-Fishing"! ☺..... On the weather; When I was working, one of my responsibilities was tracking and recording weather-data. I did so for 31 years. On top of that, the company I worked has tracked, and has the weather data dating back to 1905. The data shows weather changes and weather fluctuations are typical, and often run in 10-12 year cycles. Throughout the 1960's and 1970's some of the national 'weather people' were warning that the world is headed to an Ice Age, and we were all going to freeze to death by the 1990's. (this is well documented in countless written reports, video news reports, and on the cover-pages of national magazines, including National Geographic). Since the new Ice-Age didn't happened as predicted, it was changed to Global Warming, then to 'Climate Change' (duh, the climate 'changes' every day, week, month, year, decade, century!)... I suppose they figure people would be more afraid of burning to death, than freezing to death. How about the glaciers that are melting? How many glaciers are there? According to their reports, there are over 200,000 glaziers on earth. (30,000 significant/large ones). How many are receding/melting? About the same number that are growing.

Well said Andrew , There are prominent scientists studying this and thru exhausted research and great skepticism because that’s what they do they want to make sure that what they find is the most accurate telling information they can verify. They have concluded that it’s not Global warming and elevated Co2 it’s the Sun and planets . The Sun ! It warms and cools ever so slightly over the years they also say the planets seem to have a part in it but are much more difficult to define and research but do play a part in it , at the end they laugh at this global climate theory and say we are all being sold a bit of goods to fit their agenda . I always say "Cowboy Up". I just had to pull my boat out of the water for a tune up and to clean the bottom off, as the davit motor switches are glitching. I was getting out fishing almost one day a week working full time, but the ocean was not calm off Big Pine Key each time, up to 5-7 ft seas out to 250 ft deep with 15 MPH+ winds. I try not to cry and use the down time to work on setting up my fishing rigs and upgrade the boat. I don't have boat payments, but it is still quite costly to maintain a boat while not being able to use it.

I feel for you mate but the weather has been total crap here too, (UK), unless you are using the boat commercially and are making a living from your boat, ie fishing or sight seeing, then you must look at the boat as a luxury item and realise that you can only go out when the weather allows, my boat was built in 1973, she is a really heavy layup and built like a tank, she is 27ft long and 11ft in the beam, semi displacement hull coming in at around 5 tonnes, a great sea boat. New isnt always better, and you dont have to pay the earth for a boat if you know what you are looking at. I understand where you are coming from with getting a boat on finance but that should only come into the equation once you have gained all your experience and you can weigh up all the pros and cons. Once again Captain, you nailed it, a great video, keep it up mate.

1. Boats are expensive. Use it or not. If money is a factor do not buy one. 2. Boats require constant maintenance. As my grandmother and Rozanne Rozanna Danna used to say “theres aways something”. So boat mechanics charge about $125/ hr. 3. As a boat “captain” you are responsible for the lives of all aboard. It only takes one mis-step by them and their life could be lost. In other words boating is dangerous. You can minimize danger but you cannot foresee unpredictable occurrences. 4. Boats can be much fun but also will require much time and effort to keep clean and ready for next trip. 5. The most dangerous place when boating is at the boat ramp. Try to always have someone with you that has boating experience that can back a trailer and hook the boat up. 6. If windy conditions are predicted (over mph) then stay home. As wind gets stronger it is harder to manuever and control the boat. Also know wind can increase beyond forecast without notice. If storms predicted stay home. Lightning strikes kill and sink boats. As my mother used to say “Boats are for rich people”. Only partly right. There is a lot to owning one. Try surfing instead.

I meant to put the number “10” for wind mph. Actually if it gets to 15 knots the waves build up fast. That is my stay home limit. NOAA uses knots. Knots times 1.2 equals mph. The bigger the boat the rougher your boat can handle comfortably. My “big boat” is 19’. My little boat is 16’. I have never been out of sight of land on big boat. Dont plan to.

I just purchased a Ranger tug last week at 7% int. and was pleased interest wasn't higher but here is real problem. Taxes on top of taxes on top of taxes. These boats are priced so high due to all the overhead the manufacturers have. I know because i have owned 3 businesses. Thats another story within itself but i digress. Interest rates are unsustainable due to gvt out of control! Ill go back to my first point for sake of loooong comment. We are taxed on income then taxed when we buy aboat with money already taxed and then taxed for registering boat with your county or city for boat you have already paide taxes on then you buy tag for same already taxed 3 times boat for trailer. When you sell boat/ trailer you have to pay taxes again. We are taxed to death because our govt is spending us into oblivion!!!

Cap, I’m not sure why youre getting some negative feedback just from talking about how much it costs to keep a financed boat. Or suggesting you’re doing something “on the side” therefore causing you a loss. Youre saying exactly what most of us are already thinking. For example, we financed our motor for our boat. Regardless of the weather, that monthly payment has to be made. If I’m understanding you right, it’s not so much about the cost as much as it is about paying for something youre NOT using. Which is exactly how we feel about our boat. The weather has been so sketchy, that the weather windows are only 1-3 days at a time and fall in the middle of the week. Doesn’t help that the weather man has been consistently inaccurate lately too! Prop clear cap!🤙

Very true , captain , and I know you had other expenses like doing your remodels of the boat that piles up from your cash And yes, not being able to use something that you paying for it really aggravates you, but hopefully soon this will be gone behind us and we will have good weather this summer. Looking forward to seeing your awesome videos coming up this summer, captain. Navigate safe and prop, clear, captain.

Cap, a boat is a hole in the water you throw money into. I think I could only justify a boat if I had a just a massive amount of money stored away; otherwise would never do it.

You're not losing money because the weather is bad unless you're a commercial fisherman or you have another job you're not telling us about and they (whoever 'they' is) pay you per trip . You have to make the payments anyway regardless. For you, your boat looks like it's more of a luxury/hobby thing unless you're doing something you're not telling us. Not being mean. It's just the way I'm perceiving this channel. You go to the Bahamas and fish a little bit then come back again.

This is exactly what it is. I had to finance the last part of my boat on a personal loan at 5%, so I pay $410 every month for a lnother year or 2, to have the option to take my boat out. On top of that insurance, fuel, food, maintenance, registration, fishing permits. Not sure if someone told this guy but boats are horrible financial investment .

Depreciation of the boat. In the UK over the last couple of years boats have appreciated in value. Since the interest rate rise, people have been trying to offload and boat values have gone down.

There’s a difference between paying anyway and not being able to use or paying and using it when you don’t mind paying for your own hobbies, I can feel his pain, my boat is in the workshop since November and still paying insurance, registration and the rest for not being able to use.
