@@christopherone1 I do think Richie leaving had something to do with Jon maybe NOT acknowledging just how very very important his role was in the bands's success even though he was first hired for song writing first and singing and being a musician second. his role turned into so very💕 much more. I read where Richie said being in the group was like being in the Mafia. whatever that means. Jon did say him leaving messed him up for bout three whole years. he said on the stage when they were receiving the hall of fame award that Richie was his right arm. sometimes it is just too much on the ego for the front man and namesake of the band to admit that one person in the band is just as important as he is especially in the eyes of most of their fans.
@@parisjok5311 It's a BAND. EVERYONE IN IT is important. If Richie had problems, maybe he should have brought them up instead of walking out on the day of a show with no notice. I don't care how big his contribution was, or what his problem was, that was a shitty thing to do to the FANS, many of whom probably paid a week's pay for their ticket. But I guess his ego is all that matters, right?
My first time listening to Dead Or Alive (the album version), i hated it, then i saw this performance, happy to listen to Livin on a Prayer... made me fall in love with Dead or Alive ! I feel you brother
I remember when they did this performance. Haters called them Simon and Garfunkel. But then, everything changed. MTV came up with Unplugged series. Bands stripping down their sound. So this started a new form of expression. This a moment in history.
I live in Milan and i saw them in 1988 Live Concert.I listen your music since i was 13 and i still love them. One of the best rock band in history.Mtv unplugged was basically born from their idea
and lets not forget 💕the very good looks, the dreamy blue eyes, and that glorious head of long hair and devilish pretty smile and oh he can sing and the out of this world songwriting abilities!💘
Look at the perfect control of bends and vibrato on that solo 5:10 and his style is so identifiable, succesful or not BJ would be a whole different sound without him, and at a cost.
I was NOT a Bon Jovi fan,but I saw this performance and it impressed the hell out of me.If you can sound this good live, just two guys and their guitars, you have the REAL stuff.I respect that tremendously.
I will never understand why these kinds of singers and songwriters who have been extremely successful are still made fun of by the top critics in their field. even after selling over 120 million albums and the song Always reaching over ONE BILLION hits on spotify and so many other awards they are made fun of by some. I can understand 100% why these front men and name sake of these bands have to have huge egos cause so many are telling u that u ain"t shit no matter what. The famous extremely talented Bee Gees went through the exact same thing!! Even after the huge success of the Fever album they were made fun of. At one time no radio station would play any of their songs so they started writing and making number one hits for other famous singers. that is a brutal business and is only for the very few that can stomach it which is not many.
Acoustic music was unheard of when Jon & Richie did this and it was a mindblower. It did truly kick off the whole Unplugged movement, and as a aficionado of acoustic guitar, I loved it.
I’ve watched this so many times. What’s fantastic is the joy Jon seems to exude as he watches Richie punch out the lyrics in dead or alive. It’s nice to see the chemistry they have in the moment. Must be a great memory for them both.
I clearly remember seeing this live in 1989 and thinking "I want to do that same thing!" A short time later my dad bought me an electric guitar and I haven't put it down since!🤘
This has go to be the best acoustic performance ever........... The guitar part richie plays at the 1;28 mark is awesome No lip syncing here people. This is how its suppose to be done LIVE........ Play live or go home................
The whole "unplugged" idea seemed so pretentious to me, but the day i saw this performance on VH1, it changed my whole outlook on music. Not even exaggerating here, this made me drop my Sax from my lap and immediately started learning guitar. 15 years later, it's still one of my favorite performances ever. On a sidenote, the band may be called "Bon Jovi", but Richie is the real beast here! An absolute monster on the strings and such raw powerful vocals. Mad respect for this man.
I remember watching this when it first came out. I think I must have been about 31 years old. I do believe this is when I fell in love with Bon Jovi and especially Richie Sambora! What an awesome voice and awesome guitar playing by both of them.
I'm not the biggest BJ fan, by any means.... but holy shit!!! What a talented duo!!! They don't even need the rest of the band :) Such a powerful performance!!!
TO ALL BON JOVI FANS: Vote for Bon Jovi's 1989 performance of “Livin’ on a Prayer” / ”Wanted Dead or Alive” as the MTV Video Music Award's most Iconic performance of all time! You can vote as many times as you like so be sure to vote now and often!
I wasn't a Bon Jovi fan then and I'm not a Bon Jovi fan now. But this was a genuine moment. Iconic and extremely influential. Everyone in and out of the business took notice.
My son and i were invited to do a talent show one time at a fair…We racked our brains and couldn’t decide on a song till I stumbled on the gem…We played it exactly how they did it(need I remind you my son was 13) and long story short we won first place 🥇
MTV almost didn't do this performance because they thought it would be a lull in the MTV Music Awards but after they did this that's what led to the MTV Unplugged series
I was 9 years old in Israel.... MTV was new to us, an entire new world was discovered and bon jovi was my favorite, i had a crush on Richie...nostaligic! Dead or alive and I'll be there for you were my favorite till today
Man... I miss seeing this duo in action... It's sad they're not together anymore and it's also sad that Jon doesn't have this vocal range anymore and that he's facing so many difficulties in his live performance...
Guys just don't look like this anymore. And that's too bad cause these two were and will forever be one of a kind and gorgeous!!! Dang! Takes my breath away still.
What about RDJ and Chris Hemsworth in late 00s early 2010s in The MCU Also in film at the same time as Richie and Jon Brad Pitt and George Clooney. Richie, George and RDJ. The roughly handsome brunettes that so many girls consider more manly. the more out going ones feeling more at ease on interviews. The funny guys Then Brad, Jon and Chris Hemsworth. The beautiful ones, the ken doll type of beauty. Also while they can be funny they are slightly more serious and maybe a little more reserved. So yeah three great and sexy blonde brunette duos in entertainment Jon Bin Jovi / Richie Sambora Brad Pitt/George Clooney RdJ/ Chris Hemsworth. Ok on the marvel Brothers im cheating a bitt. RDJ's true hot soul brother was Chris Evans. But I found Hemsworth hotter and still RDJ and Chris Hemsworth did get along pretty well. But honestly the dynamic duo's in the MCU were either Evans/Hemsworth or RDJ/Evans.
I guarantee you that thousands of kids if not more picked up a guitar after this. You cant learn to sing like this, but playing the guitar was possible for most of them.
Chris J u can train your voice to sing. Sing at the top of your lungs. It takes years to develop. U won't match JBJs voice. But your voice will improve.
Man you are absolutely right! I watched this live on TV as a 12 year old kid and I knew what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I wasn't even worried about the singing. I just wanted to play guitar like Richie. Also saw GnR do an electric version of Patience on the American Music Awards right around the same time as this performance and Slash's solo on a '59 Les Paul sealed the deal. I was a lost cause after that!
El primer Unplugged de la MTV, es algo mítico, cuando Richie se baja el sombrero, las guitarras, las voces , todo. Creo que ahí dejaron la huella de lo que siempre fueron y serán, unos Grandes. Gracias Richie, Jon, gracias Bon Jovi
Bon Jovi was my first ever rock n' roll concert when I was 13 years old, and I was hypnotized by Jon and Ritchie was obviously the second in the row, hahahaha!!! This concert bonded me with one of my besties in life and made that night unforgettable, it was magical! By the end of it I remember my friend and I got one of the cups Jon drank in the concert, we kept it as a souvenir of that night for such a long time, what a crazy thing to do, but we were crazy chicks back then and life was pure ecstasy!!!!
I saw Bon Jovi live in 1989 on the New Jersey tour, one of the best concerts I've ever seen, they were and still are awesome but back there no one compared at all.
I remember watching this performance when it originally aired. It was this performance that soon after gave MTV the idea to create their hit show "Unplugged"
Cmon guys vote for this to win most iconic VMA performance! we're winning this!! one week to go!! Bon jovi defo deserve to win this, this performance was truly iconic and ground breaking. Just two talented musicians/singers with no flashy lights or props, just Jon and Richie on two chairs playing and singin their hearts out. true talent. thats all. Vote!!!
Legend! My teenage crush for sure! I saw him live at the ' Slippery When Wet' tour when I was 16. Sadly, so very long ago. Now I get AARP magazine and he's on the cover this month. Damn, we old.
this right here is the real thing, and they deserve to win more than anyone, because you can see that they are singing from their hearts and it shows you that you dont need anything else but a guitar and two amazing singers as jon and richie on stage to have a mind blowing performance.im 14 years old and i absolutely love their music and i think that this really is an iconic performance because I,including millions of kids that are my age are now watching and loving this,so pleas vote for them
