By Elder Dale G. Renlund
Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles
October 2023 Sunday Morning General Conference
“I had mistakenly presumed that the water of baptism washed away sins. Not so. In the years since my baptism, I have learned that sins are cleansed by the power of Jesus Christ through His atoning sacrifice as we make and keep the baptismal covenant.”

39 years ago, my bishop, Bishop Anderson, told me my sins were washed away "symbolically". He said I actually become clean when I was confirmed a member of the Church and given the gift of the Holy Ghost, is when I am cleansed. He shared with me in the scriptures where it is called the baptism of fire. He said this continues to happen when I take the sacrament. Because of his counsel, I have taken the sacrament very seriously, and only miss it when I absolutely have no other choice, which has only been a few times in my life. I don't see how this is new.

It is like when you are thirst you will drink water from the bottle, Let's say bottle is the baptism Then water is the Atonement of Christ. Which of these quench your thirst? Obviously the water but the bottle helps you to drink the water . Baptism is a requirement to have the access from the Atonement it is hoping to cleanse following Christ example. Baptism connect us to the Savior's power to cleanse , Christ has power to cleanse not the water itself.

New doctrine? What do you mean by that? How did you arrive at that conclusion?

Faith, Repentance, Baptism and the Gift of the Holy Ghost... in that specific order. One who has repented is ready for baptism, meaning already clean and ready to become a new creature in Christ unto a remission of former sins. We repent prior to baptism, hence the interview. We repent before partaking the sacrament. Baptism and Sacrament do not wash away anything. They are statements before our KING that we are willing, determined to put off the natural man and love and follow Him. In response to our commitment by these sacred acts, He promises us help by the Holy member of the Godhead designated to help us in this life, the Holy Spirit. Elder Renlund taught pure doctrine for those who wish to understand Christ's doctrine. Those who wish to stir trouble will never understand or want to understand.

We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost.”

Definitions of remission of sin. the act of absolving or remitting; formal redemption as pronounced by a priest in the sacrament of penance. synonyms: absolution, remission, remittal. types: indulgence. the remission by the pope of the temporal punishment in purgatory that is still due for sins even after absolution.

I no longer believe 8 year olds are the age of accountability. Can an 8 year old child understand the gravity of becoming a member of the LDS religion? Make a choice or obligation to serve as a missionary at 8years old when age 18 ?

The article of Faiths states batism washes away sins. It's very clear. It's been taught for almost 200 years until 2023. Slowly changing the doctrine.

But LDS doctrine has been that baptism remits sin. The 4th article of faith and the children’s song ‘When I am Baptized’ are just two of many examples.

No, you're grasping at straws. Water doesn't cleanse, Christ's atonement does. Baptism is an outward act of faith to make a covenant with God to always remember Christ and take His name upon us and fulfill the comandment. Its unwise to assume you have greater knowledge or a better understanding than an Apostle of God.

@@JasonPaull-ss6hp The point isn’t that the water itself cleanses. That’s a straw man. The question is whether someone is cleansed of all sin by the ordinance of baptism. It is irrefutable that that has been taught. Elder Renlund’s talk will either be edited, as has happened with previous conference addresses, or the church will adjust the doctrine and begin to remove all of the many talks etc. which promulgate it.

What he said is more in-line with: baptismal water is not what makes us clean. It is the Savior Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ uses the covenant made through the ordinance of baptism to cleanse our sins, not the physical water we enter. The reason he distinguished a difference in the power of the water and the power of Jesus Christ… is that one continues to cleanse while the other is a one-time event. To build on his story shared: he explains that he misunderstood that right after his baptism was the cleanest he would ever be. “Not so”… he later learned, because it was not the dip into the baptismal font that cleansed him, but rather the power of Jesus Christ, which is received through the covenantal ordinance of the sacrament as well. He in no wise detracted from the importance of baptism (or the washing away of sins), but rather refocused what baptism was actually doing. Baptism is not done for us to wash away our own sins.. baptism is done as a witness and a covenant that we are choosing and willing to follow Jesus Christ. As a result, Jesus Christ cleanses us.. not the water. To add: baptismal purity is true. However, the thought: “right after baptism is the purest or cleanest we will EVER be again” is not true. The sacrament renews that purity every single week, should our hearts covenant once again to follow the Savior Jesus Christ.

To God all things are spiritual. All the ordinances are reflective of spiritual things, but aren't themselves the thing that does anything. The real power has always been through Jesus Christ's atonement. Otherwise why would we need to repent and confess our sins before we are baptized? I understand it can be confusing when he says we wasn't washed clean by the water. However, that phrasing has always ever been metaphorical. It's not a literal thing. Like the temple ordinances it is largely symbolic. It would likewise be wrong to believe that going through the temple guarantees you exaltation. They specifically say that obedience to the laws and covenants made are what do that.

You don't understand the Gospel bro. Christ Blood can cleanse us, baptism is an act of faith looking forward that the atonement of Christ will manifest to us, water's of baptism alone does not cleanse us but it is a requirement

Baptism IS for the remission if sins. But its not the water that cleanses. The holy spirit sanctifies (baptism by fire) made possible by the the atonement of Jesus. All the quotes you dug up are saying the same thing. This doctrine is not in any way new. Thats how it has always been. Maybe this a new concept to you. Or maybe you are just twisting truths to try and create contradiction. Thats the same tactic the Adversary uses. Not a good look bruh.

My guy, you can't cut and paste.. we believe all the words of the prophets.. however, if you're gunna cut and paste it should be for purpose of teaching a true principle unto the building of faith and strengthening your brother.. but if you cut and paste to prove a fault unto the tearing down of your brothers faith then you are a liar who took a word out of context. Did Christ suffer for our sins in the garden only? Or only on the cross? Or was it when he was beaten with stripes? If i quoted Isaiah that "by his stripes we are healed", and quoted another saying, he sweat great drops of blood so great was his agony for the sins of the whole world, is there a lie to be found? So it is with baptism unto the forgiveness of sins.. All of the above. What is baptism without Christ sacrafice? What is baptism without faith? What is baptism without laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost? What is baptism without the sacrament? What is baptism without enduring to the end? Take all the truth and build upon it.

When you seek answers from the Book of Mormon instead of the Bible, God can't help you because you have turned your back on Him. Therefore this leaves the door open for Satan(II Corinthians 11:14-15) to step into your life with a false christ or prophet showing you signs and wonders to lead you away from the real Jesus of the Bible who is God the Son 2nd person of the Trinity. God Himself warns us about this in: MATTHEW 24:23-24 "Then if anyone says to you, Look, here is the Christ! or There! do not believe it. For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect..." Mormons teach and believe that their jesus is the brother of Satan, which contradicts what God says in His Bible that Jesus is God the Son 2nd person of the Trinity. So Mormons, which Jesus do you believe in? A. Your jesus of the Book of Mormon, who is the brother of Satan. OR B. The Jesus of the Bible, who is God the Son 2nd person of the Trinity.
