In this video, I show you how to calculate discounts, tax, tips, and double discounts. In addition, I also work out problems in which you must determine the original price of an item, given the sales price of that item as well as a discount rate.
Since you are not permitted to use a calculator on the ASVAB, you must be comfortable working with decimals as well as performing long division by hand to perform the calculations on the test well as in the video. If those are topics with which you struggle, you may want to watch the following videos first:

I’m studying for the ASVAB and I hit a discount issue that I am a little puzzled on where to start. What was the original price of the refrigerator, if the final price is 70.40.”

@xgatestohellx3024
@xgatestohellx3024 2 года назад
Original price can be easier determined: If Peter bought that after 20% discount it means he bought watch for 80% of original price(100%-20%=80%). So we can determine mean of 1% original price(84:80, if its hard for you, check Grammar hero guides about dividing).We got 1,05=1%, so 20%=21, Add this value(21) to price after discount and you will get original price Here solve in math language: 100%-20%=80% - selling price of original 84:80=1,05 - 1% of original price 20 • 1,05=21 - 20% of original price 84+21=105 - $ original

Just curious for a question like the last one, either the SP = OA - OA(DR) OR Percent change = New price - old price/ old price x 100 works.. Is there a reason to use one over the other or is it just a matter of preference?
@GrammarHero
@GrammarHero 2 года назад
For calculating discounts, tax, and tips, it's easier to go with the first method. If a question explicitly asks about percent change, you should go with the percent change formula.

@Kenny-bp8ux
@Kenny-bp8ux 3 года назад
On the .8 divided by 840; I thought that in the long division that we go for the first number then if it can't divide it that's when we combine the first and the second number. What makes this one different from other long division? Like why do we have to divide 8 by 84 instead of 8 by 8 then 8 by 40? Thanks
@GrammarHero
@GrammarHero 3 года назад
You can do it either way. If you do it the way I did in the video, there are fewer steps.
@Kenny-bp8ux
@Kenny-bp8ux 3 года назад
@@GrammarHero when I did it, I got 15 instead of 105. 8 goes into 8 is 1 time, 8 minus 8 is zero. Bring down 40, 8 goes into 40 is 5 times then 5 multiply by 8 is 40. 40 minus 40 is zero.

@@Kenny-bp8ux You can only bring down one term at a time, so you made a small mistake with your arithmetic. @@Lokirlehrawhaw you are taking .2 away from 1 ( 1-.2) and you'll get .8. Check your work by adding .8 and .2 ( .8+.2 ) and you will get 1. I used to have problems with fractions and decimals so I would use pizza to help me out. Ex: I have one whole pizza and its cut into 10 slices. Each slice can be thought of as 1/10th of the pizza. If you eat 2 slices, how many are left? 8 are left. You can stop there but to explain it a little more, you have 8/10ths left. If you convert that fraction to 80/100 (cause 100 kind of represents 1) you then know the percentage which is 80%. To make it a decimal you move the dot two places to the left and you get .8. But I think you get it. I hope this helped but if not, I'm sorry if I confused you more.

Hey i don’t really understand the original price any can give me tips??
@scrubbles1383
@scrubbles1383 3 года назад
So the formula for the original price is: Sales Price = Original Amount - Original Amount (Discounted) For question 2 you are given the $450 for the Sales Price. 450 = Original Amount - Original Amount (Discount Rate) Next you were given the discount which in this case was 10%. 450 = Original Amount - Original Amount (.10 [convert percent to decimal by moving it two places to the left]) Now we will substitute "Original Amount" with a variable to account for the unknown. 450 = X - X (.10) Next you clean it up. 450 = X - .1X. In front of a variable is always a "1" so it will become. 450 = 1x - .1x. You subtract like terms and get .9. 450 = .9x Then you divided both sides by .9 450/.9 = .9/.9x 500 = x

You can use the percent change formula. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3ym96HabK6U.html Either way, finding the original price isn't suppose to be super easy; it does require some critical thinking.
