Candela Obscura is an ongoing monthly horror drama that follows an esoteric order of investigators as they use centuries of knowledge to fight back against a mysterious source of corruption and bleed. Leveraging gaming as a story mechanic, the series features the Candela Obscura tabletop roleplaying game from Darrington Press, which is built on the Illuminated Worlds system.
Candela Obscura: The Circle of The Crimson Mirror will be three episodes long starring Aimee Carrero, Imari Williams, Alexander Ward, and Taliesin Jaffe alongside our Gamemaster, Liam O'Brien.

I usually reach for stories with that kind of grounded undercurrent seen in the prior CO chapters, but sometimes you can let the genre conventions fully dictate the world. imo that’s what I think will let this chapter stand out.

I think I'm going to pinch this for if I ever DM for 5e. Screw meeting in a tavern, try surviving on a boat during a storm with a bunch of random people you barely know. Escorting a champion of the gods and there being a conspiracy due to the low level of the characters sounds like an interesting hook. Who wanted the body out of the way?

This new circle is my favourite so far but I will have to say the most outstanding moment over all is finally, after YEARS and so many different campaigns, finally getting to conclusively see Liam and Tal's characters romance each other properly. Alex's reaction was also priceless!

Even though this was a horror game, the way Liam paints the beautiful scenery and moments in between made this feel like a fairytale, making the horror scenes even more stark. Loved this episode!!

Oh hey guys, just so you know - The livestream does not appear under 'Videos' on your channel, it instead appears under 'Live' It's gonna be hard for folks to find these episodes if they're not aware of this change. I already don't see Flando in the comments. This will happen with the main campaign episodes too. Would recommend reuploading the VOD on Monday like y'all usually do to avoid confusion. Edit: Apparently, changing the settings from "live" to "premiere" will do the trick? Please do so, that'd be great.

So far the best Candela Obscura campaign. Liam went back to Gothic horror and Lovecraftian. Simple eerie places, with simple eerie people with a complete lack of knowledge of what is going on apart from knowing that SOMETHING is going on and nobody is saying a word about it. To me, a creepy island is more terrifying than a monster crawling out of a portal.

I'll be honest, this is the first Candela episode I've watched where it really hits the Vibe™ that I've been longing for. The first chapter was good, I haven't really gotten into the other two, but Liam as GM is perfect for this kind of atmosphere. Amazing cast and characters, amazing vibes, the twist had me reeling, can't wait for what comes next.

@@lemonoclefox I struggled to get past Spenser's opening couple hours, everything was just too hectic for me, but once everyone settled in and got going it was incredible. He was probably my favorite GM for Candela so far, and episode 3 of his run was bone-chilling. No spoilers other than Brennan Lee Mulligan acting out one of the most horrific scenes I've ever seen in a ttrpg.

I saw Aimee comment in some clip, that playing with very experienced players was making her nervous. But she is so good. I know she experienced some of the best gm's in the business, but still, such a great job for her level of experience. She will be one of the best in no time. Also this cast is amazing. I love Alex from everything, and he is so good at helping people. Taliesin has always been the supportive player and has the depth and patience to be great in highlight and in the background. Great to see Imari play, I clearly need to find everything else he has done.

How I ABSOLUTELY love this new series… Liam is so good at GMing, especially for this kind of horror setting! His voice can be so soothing or so horrifying depending on the situation, adding so much flavor for the game Also what an absolute joy to see Talisan as a player in these horror world. The way Leo sometimes speak really gives me the Molly vibe(I miss him😢) “a professional man of leisure” it is!

@@symphonixbladesI think it’s all about the tone GM’s are most comfortable playing in. Aabria and Mercer are both great, but their strengths were less suited. Mercer builds an expansive world the pc’s can live within like no other, and Aabria has the unparalleled ability to craft character interactions and scenarios that dig into the inner workings of the characters psyche. But, Liam is crucially most comfortable leaning into tone and tropes. The specific length and narrative nature of CO build the perfect scenario for Liam.

@@symphonixblades to be fair, Matt’s was in the top imo BECAUSE of Robbie… he was the strongest player in that cast (and my favorite character in general bc he was in the first release of this series, so he helped pioneer the vibes, if you know what I mean) and he just really embodied the decline of mental sanity that I feel would happen if you kept getting Bleed and triggering/feeding the… with no spoilers… voices in your head. Basically, anything Robbie is in is my favorite… EXU, C3 ep1-14, hell especially the Legend of Zelda one shot 😂😂

It was honestly frustrating seeing the players ignore the pigs to this extent. Liam mentioned them over and over and they just did not pick up on anything Edit: To elaborate, I suspect the pigs were Nora and the other two sisters, as there was also 3, Liam is definitely leaning into the fairy tale vibe, and they kept on coming up

Taliesin's non verbal for his character looks like he is constantly casting a spell, which is sort of true. Nb: it reminded me of characters losing sanity points in Cthulhu. His character does look like he has seen supernatural horrors before, faced them, and came out with a sort of smile (shaken, bent even, but not broken).

I finally listened to the soundtrack yesterday while stuck in traffic on the interstate while it was raining. Coming from a musician and a composer, I consider it to be a masterclass on spooky writing and writing for strings. I was geeking out the entire time!

The scenes in the town and ESPECIALLY in the cottage are giving me the exact vibes as Hyper RPG's KOLLOK and 10 Candles games (fittingly named, given that this is /Candela/ Obscura) and I'm so here for it, holy shit. I think Liam's style of DMing happens to fall close to Zach Eubank's in a system like this, which, like 10 Candles, is firmly horror w/ a bit of mystery

3:29:00 The doctor is so right. Leo is used to reactions to his "strange appearance" being backing up or approaching/commenting, but he IS also just used to the city (afaik). Rural town folks are not necessarily at all interested in talking to out of town strangers, but why should in that case their alternative response be to back up? they are on their own land doing their own business. They might just as well think the foreigners are the ones who should back up. It's just curiosity.

I love the dynamic between Leo and Malcom. Leo chiding him while also strongly suggesting he cares for him and Grimoria is tops. Malcolm's view of service and how that reflects on his place in Candela is so interesting. I appreciate the layers in these characters as well as the fantastic acting that brought them to life.
