My first attempt at Octopus. I've bumped a couple of these guys so far but never put on in the kayak until this day. Yes I am a newbie at this so a little slack will help.
Here is what we did -
Iced, cut just below the eyes and at the head. Turned the head inside out - removed all organs. Peeled the heads skin back, turned it inside out and rinsed. Tentacles were scrubbed by hand. My pot of boiling water consisted of the following:
Parsley
Thyme
Lemon
Onion
Salt
Wine
Celery
The octopus was boiled on a low heat for just under an hour and put in the fridge over night. The next day I rubbed some olive oil on it and put it on the cast iron. Served with some green onions and we were good!

Elias... there are times when I think you might give a self induced excitement on your catch-n-cook taste test, but this time I think you are genuinely excited about the results. - we all watched you and said “he really does like it”. Thanks for thinking outside of the box and giving us real content.

AMAZING... thanks Elias for preparing something that so many people are literally horrified to even attempt! Looks like it came out wonderful, and that's what makes it so cool, the fact that it's considered a "by-catch" or nuisance species, but once given a little attention and TLC, it came out GREAT, just goes to show people just don't know what they're missing! Yet another GREAT video!

I have had octopus and I will have to try your recipe. The way I have had it was first peel that very superficial skin that it has and you end up with a snow whit meat, boil in a pressure cooker so that its not chewy, chop up into small pieces put in a bowl and add some (some to your taste) vinegar, oil, finely diced onion and maybe some diced tomato.. Its very good. / I didn't see that you tried jack crevalle I would suggest you use a 12" frying pan and fry it whole (clean it, scale it, and that horizontal line of hard skin just fillet that line off don't skin the fish) its very good. I have also had large ones but obviously cooked differently here we're talking about a pan size fish.

Octopus is my favorite at the sushi bar. It is very important how you cook it, otherwise you'll be chewing on leather. Im now on the Olympic Peninsula where the Giant Pacific Red can be found in the Strait of Juan De Fuca; but I'm fairly certain that I'm going to have to dive to acquire one (yummy) ! Been watching your videos for a long time.... keep them coming Eli!

Hey bud. Love your videos. I live in Japan and figured I'd chime in here. They're eaten all the time here. One of the coolest ways to eat them is in these fried dough balls called "tako yaki". You put cheese, or spices, or whatever you want into the dough and fry up the balls. I'm sure there's some cool recipies out there. Just chop it up into chunks and toss it right in. Keep the videos coming!

The best catch and cook you've ever done Elias! Superb ingredients! Very nice preparation! Try it on linguini or a big bowl of orzo! If I were to somehow catch squid back up here in the Northeast, I'd definitely bring them home to use as the meat for my Greek style stir fry recipe.

LOL!! Great for a googan!! You don't need to broil or pan after boiling it. You can add it to any salsa (at the last minute of the salsa cooking) or just mix the boiled pieces with boiled potatoes, fresh chop garlic and parsley and olive oil on top. Excellent job!! I am AMAZED you caught an octopus with rod and reel!!! (you are becoming James Bond...) CONGRATS and a big like!!!

You would love squid man. Use to catch squid off the docks in Rhode Island around 1 or 2am. All you need is a great light source and shine it in the water. Basically just cast and pull instantly. Bring home, clean and grill immediately, as soon as possible. If you think crabs are sweet, fresh grilled squid will change your life. Some Tabasco sauce and it’s a party.

Cook it any way you want. The secret is to cut the meat very thin, like slivers and add to salads. Keep in fridge marinating in olive oil, lemon juice and any spices you like. Vinegar works too, but lemon juice pairs best.

A couple o glasses of red wine, 1 chopped onion, a can of tomatoes, salt & pepper, 2 bay leaves and oregano. Chop up the octopus and cook in a pot until it's tender enough (more than an hour for sure, could be 2) and keep adding water to a pasta sauce consistency. When ready mix with the penne. Greek.
