Changing the Spark Plugs on a Volkswagen Polo 6R

Quick Fix

This is a short how-to video guide on how I changed the spark plugs on a Volkswagen (VW) Polo 6R with a 1.2 Petrol engine.
They were absolutely knackered in my opinion so this change was a must!
I didn't fully go into depth as I believe this repair was quite a simple thing to do but if anyone has any questions leave them in the comments section below and I will do my best to answer them.
The main reason why I changed them is because the car would stutter and hesitate on acceleration, loss of performance, etc.

This is a really great, no nonsense video about spark plug change. The plugs you took out were very worn - other than a VW stamp, did you notice a manufacturers name on the plugs? I hope you have got more mpg too after the new plugs went in. Can't go wrong with Bosch. Top tip for next time: use some dielectric grease and coat the porcelain and connection end for improved performance. Also your engine sounds amazing for 120K+ miles. You must be using good engine oil, frequent changes?

Thanks for the comment. Sorry for the late reply. I appreciate the feedback, this was the first time I changed spark plugs so I didn't know that. Will keep it in mind for next time. MPG wise I am not sure as I wasn't driving at that time, I am guessing though it would have made a difference as the car was jerky beforehand.

Great video man! I have an 09 Seat Ibiza 1.6 Petrol which is pretty much a 4 cylinder version of the 1.2. Did the hiccups under acceleration fully go away after you put the new plugs in? I also have the same issue when I accelerate from low RPM's, got some NGK plugs on the way from AutoDoc so I hope that sorts it out!

Thanks for watching! Yep the hiccup fully went away and the car was much smoother. I know on some of these they have ignition leads instead of coils and they can go bad too.

@@Whosgonnafixit_ Changed the plugs today and the car no longer hesitates, drives great now! The Ignition coils looked to be good condition too so that's another plus, cheers again for the video!

Had a quote today for 3 Bosch spark plugs for Vw polo £46!!! (December 2023)

That seems a decent price to be fair, this was a while ago. Is that just parts or with fitting? I usually get my parts from places like eurocarparts and carparts4less and use the honey add on for discounts. Best to check there in case it’s cheaper.

I have a question, a VW Polo 1.2 of 70 hp 6R, to change spark plugs is it imperative to buy originals from the brand so as not to make a mistake or can we buy brands like Bosch or NGK or similar in competition? I heard an engineer say that he saw a case where they put some NGKs and it went wrong after a few kilometers, which then went out.

Hi, I wouldn’t say it’s necessary to use original spark plugs. This is simply because the original ones are usually of Bosch or NGK brand anyhow, just with a VW stamp on them too. Like with any, there is a chance of them being faulty out the box but it is very rare. I’ve always used NGK or BOSCH and never had an issue. Hope this helps.

Hi, I'd be happy to answer any questions you have. I believe I have covered the whole process though to be fair. Its pretty simple to do on these engines as they are small and only have 3 cylinders.
