A Barry sized bowl is probably how most people would measure their food. Suggested portion sizes on packaging are usually there to make it seem like there hardly are any calories / sugars / fats in the food.

So a fun fact about the astronaut ice cream, it never actually went up into space due to it being so crumbly, all of the little pieces would make an incredible mess and thus it isn't something that Nasa would ever send up into space. The whole idea of it was started as a gimmick and has really gone out of control, claiming to be space food, but none of it really is.

What’s really frustrating about the magic spoon cereal is that there are those of us who find stevia disgusting. It doesn’t just taste sweet. It’s… noxious.

Not a complaint exactly, but the reason Jude's icecream seems such a reasonable price for the same size tub as other premium brands is it's more "whipped". 460ml of vanilla Jude's only weighs 275gm, whereas 460ml of vanilla Haagen Dazs is 400gm. So it's ecofriendly and great if you're on a diet (and yes it tastes good), but remember you are paying for a lot of air.

That ice cream sandwich was really nostalgic for me. As a kid I was obsessed with "astronaut food", I'd walk out of every sciencey type museum my parents took me to with a block of that stuff.

I was expecting Ben to dunk the freeze dried ice cream into that bowl of water. He didn't. What was the bowl of water for 🤣

Would like to point out that freeze drying is actually pulling a vacuum, not putting it under pressure. Reducing the pressure with a vacuum lowers the boiling point of the liquid, which allows the sublimation

Idea for a communication badge: Two or three normals are presented with an identical mystery box each. They then have to come up with a plan for a dish, and make the dish, while the kitchen is divided, so the normals can't see what the others are doing, but they can speak with each other during the cooking process. The aim is to produce 2/3 identical dishes, both in taste and looks.

Honestly, Magic Spoon cereal was too good to be true in my opinion. The texture was wrong and Barry is right it is over sweet. I would avoid it, I got it whilst on Keto cause I just wanted a sweet snack and it sat in my cupboard for a few weeks after my first bowl - couldn't bare throwing it away when I spent nearly a tenner on it!

Really been enjoying these “food trends” series. Especially since, it shows me what new things are going on in the world of food. Keep it up gents!

Freeze drying is where you put materials at a low temperature and low pressure (a vacuum), not under pressure Ben!

the only positive about that cereal is their return policy. 100% money back, I tried it, all of them had an awful aftertaste(stevia...) and it stuck to the teeth in an uncomfortable way leaving a coating in the mouth that wouldnt go away.

I've done a lot of competitive analysis at my job in the "keto" market that includes products like this. Monkfruit & allulose is currently the most popular non-nutritive sweetener on the market. That being said you can absolutely taste the difference. IMO there is still no sugar alternative on the market that has no off taste.

Would have been interesting to have seen the rest of the magic spoon flavours tried, most of the reviews I've seen that weren't sponsored found Magic Spoon terrible, though usually note that the peanut butter is the best one

“Adult cereal” not once have I thought cereal wasn’t universal - shouldn’t kids also be having healthier, better-for-you cereal? I guess children are perhaps drawn to the classic brands and parents just go with it

I wouldn't blindly trust claims of being carbon negative. Carbon offset initiatives can very wildly in method and efficiency. And often they end up being outright scams. The carbon negative label is often like "BIO", or "organic" - basically meaningless marketing speak.

I love that you hated everything about Magic Spoon and still gave it a pass. XD It tastes terrible, has gross mouth feel, and is ridiculously priced. It wouldn't exist without the "influencer" push.

i would love to see a comparison of the environmental impact of different types of plant-based milks! there's so many out there now (soy, almond, macadamia, pea, oat)

Around 12 years as a youngster I worked for Judes over the summer holidays and even to this day if I see a tub of Judes' ice cream I'll always buy it - they're a fantastic company run by some brilliant people and the local community all feel the same!

Wait wait wait... I tried that astronaut ice-cream when I visited Cape Canaveral (sorry if I've butchered the spelling) almost thirty years ago! "New"? On another subject though, I love how you compared Barry's bowl of cereal to the "recommended" sizing. One bugbear of mine is how the "nutritional information" is based on portion sizing that nobody would ever actually have in real life.

I've never seen the appeal of that particular cereal, based on price point alone, but that nova app sounds unbelievably appealing.

Quick edit on Ebbers piece on freeze drying, it’s not put under pressure it’s put under vacuum. This allows the water molecules to instantly change phase from ice directly to a gas (essentially sublimation) skipping out the melting part. So it’s solid phase directly to gas phase skipping out the liquid phase.

Glad you included those cereals! I've seen them pop up as RU-vid sponsors recently, and have been fairly sceptical of small boxed cereal. Here in the UK I've always bought boring storebrand cereal, that's a better value for money, but not full on flavour.

I feel as though the idea of a processing score is a bit reductive, it is true that some processed foods are less good for us and the environment, but conversely, processing food is something that makes many staple foods available and safe to eat, such as milk, grains, meat, stuff like that, processing can be bad but it can also be very good, as it opens up a wider diet in a way that, when done right, is safer than the alternative of consuming an unprocessed alternative, (such as unpasteurized milk, for instance, pasteurization is a mechanical processing of milk to kill pathogens and make it safe to consume) the ecological impact is much more clear cut, the less food travels to arrive on our table, the better, dunno, just kinda irked by the insinuation in the app that more processing is automatically bad, it's the green to red scale they have i think, it's not a big deal in the grand scheme

Planting trees is not the answer. There isn't enough land to plant enough trees to offset the amount of carbon being produced by all the industry. But, it's a start. And I applaud the company for getting to that point, and keeping the cost of the product at a reasonable point as well.

First off I’d like to say I’m a big fan of the show I have been following along for probably two years now! However I feel like the stance taken towards the diary and beef industry isn’t a fair judgement. As a cattle producer in the U.S. i have worked in every aspect of the beef industry even studying Animal Science in college. I understand that your show is based in London but id I like to throw out some U.S numbers because it’s what I know. Per the 2016 US epa study shows that the cattle industry (including dairies) only made up 2% percent of emissions, while transportation made up 28.5%, electricity making up 28.4% and even Ag crops making 4.7%. Now I understand globally livestock make up 14.5% of emissions which don’t get me wrong it is something In the agriculture world that we should all work on, however 80% of that number come from developing countries that have not quite become as efficient as bigger countries such as the U.S and say Japan. There is a long way to go and we can all do our part and I really love the idea of the carbon negative ice cream, I think it’s amazing that they have accomplished such a feat. But I don’t think we should attack or stand against certain livestock producers when there is a bigger elephant in the room on emissions standards! I will continue to watch your show but I would love to see some episodes on beef production. If you are interested in Beef and it’s carbon footprints Dr. Frank Mitloehner has some amazing insight on this kind of stuff! Thanks for your time.

thoughts on the "cereal": like ben, my first thought was "that's not a cereal". secondly, that's really fucking expensive and i don't see why you would have it as a treat. i don't have something "healthy" as a treat. if i eat my own high protein, low carb breakfast every day, then i wouldn't grab the magic spoon cereals as a treat, i would just grab regular cereal. to be honest, i don't really see the point of it at that price point. just eat müsli - roll oats with dried fruits or nuts or even small chuncks of chocolate

Interesting extra note about the "astronaut icecream" and freeze dried food is that it's an incredibly useful think for camping and especially backpacking when you 1 don't have things refrigeration methods and 2 want everything in your pack to be as light as possible. So not entirely just a novelty

Pretty sure a lot of the stuff on the app comes from the box themselves. There is a lot of marketing going on the labels, but there is also a lot of stuff they are forced to add by law, like the nutritional values per 100g(or ml), which are the best way to compare two similar products. Sadly in the UK the weight doesn't seem to be mandatory, as it isn't the address of the factory producing the product (two things which would be really useful in identifying good or bad products or comparing the nutritional values of a part of the box)

I love sorted but honestly it feels like so often the group is trying to make everything sound positive. Like trying to say that this breakfast*** cereal could be used as a snack, just because it's entirely unreasonably priced.

12:10 Thanks to Barry for mentioning a subject that has bothered me. Those who purchase "carbon offsets" (or "plant trees") to excuse their lifestyles are saying "If you have enough money you can live however you want." The sacrifices in lifestyle to reduce carbon emissions are only to be made by the middle class and the poor.

Oh, I really like that app! We have a very similar iniciative over here in Brazil called "Desrotulando" (or "Unlabelling", in english) and it's super helpful. It's based on the Food Guide for the Brazilian People, which companies like Coca-Cola HATE because it classifies sodas as the nutritiously poor things they are lol. The people behind it also use their platforms to educate people on produce and sazonality so you can make informed choices on things that don't have labels as well. One of my favourite iniciatives from the last few years!

The thing about that cereal that made me sceptical is the saying that it's a low glycemic index. You've replaced "normal sugar" with another form of sugar that ends up going into the body and becoming more glucose and fat than "normal sugar" would.

I used to love getting astronaut food when visiting the space center or Smithsonian. The freeze dried mint chocolate chip ice cream was great.

I think what I love is that they call the astronaut ice cream a new food trend, but I distinctly remember going to Johnson Space Center in Houston as a child circa 2000 and getting that exact same bag of that exact same ice cream. That’s just me being picky, but freeze drying/dehydrating is actually becoming a thing again in general- my local farmers market had one freeze dried/dehydrated booth pop up in the past two years and then last time there was a couple. I think it’ll be like the people who cut out vinyl stuff for laptops and tumblers and stickers; oversaturated market.

That app sounds really cool! But it could be damaging for people who struggle with eating disorders, seeing that bright red dot next to certain nutritional values even for things like fruit.

I tried out the magic spoon cereal, my husband and I love a bowl of cereal at night. While I did actually really enjoy the flavors, just as you guys mentioned, it really does stick to your teeth. I’m a huge texture person when it comes to food so unfortunately i just couldn’t get over the texture.

My grandpa loved anything space related. He bought a color tv so we could watch man walk on the moon in color. Had a party and i was allowed to stay up late to watch. The actual moonwalk was in black and white! But he would go to cape Canaveral on his Florida vacations and often brought us back astronauts food home. Even the toothpaste tube ones! Lol. Ice cream was our favorite. His prized possession. His astronaut ink pen that could write upside down. 😂 We drank tang as "its good enough for nasa its good enough for us!" Im saving to buy a freeze dryer. They are getting more reasonable in costs.

A note guys: please seriously reconsider using almond milk. Almond trees are absolutely horrible for the environment, being incredibly water intensive and inefficient space wise.

I have always loved astronaut ice cream and it broke my heart when i found out that it has never actually been to space due to the crumble factor. It was deemed too dangerous to have in an antigravity situation. But it's still so yummy. Best part is you can now find it in most camping sections : D

If there's ever anything that raises doubts in the quality of a product it's when they start pushing their social/environmental achievements. Too often it seems like brands that pull that kind of marketing stunt are hoping that people will buy their products not because it is a quality product or tastes good but because of the social/environmental message and that message, that dogma will paper over any short comings of the product.

I feel like you guys at Sorted have really heard our thoughts in the past and have added the healthy dose of scepticism necessary. It’s really good to see.

As a diabetic, the Magic Spoon cereal's are great for me. Only flavor (out of what I have tried) I don't like is the fruity. Rest are fantastic!!!

I would love to see you guys trying 'upfront'! It is a company based in the Netherlands and their goal is to be honest about ingredients and nutritional facts. With realistic portion sizes and everything that is important is on the front of the package, not put away at the back!

I’ve been trying magic spoon since I’m in a health position of needing to maximize the nutritional value of what little I eat though I struggle to eat much of it texturally it’s a bit much. I found some flavors tastier than others tho, the maple made me sad but, I like the chocolate

Youre legitimately the first people Ive seen review magic spoon who didnt find it utterly dissapointing.

I personally love the Jude's milk lollies because it feeds into the nostalgia of a mini milk, so I'm happy to know they're doing something good.

If magic spoon would add more vitamins and minerals to it I might consider buying it with the added expense. All it really as going for it it the net carbs, protein, and no sugar. Otherwise it it in some cases less healthy then some of the cereals with sugar. Especially when you are replacing something that has more nutritional value just to eat expensive cereal.

I'm so glad someone is looking at Magic Spoon, because they're sponsoring SO many RU-vid channels. Portion size with breakfast cereal in particular is a sticky wicket -- so many of them have a recommended serving size of just half a cup, because they're not intended to be one's entire breakfast. And I imagine it's so sweet because it's designed for American tastes, replicating sugary favorites like Fruit Loops or Coco Pops. As for the astronaut ice cream, I've loved that stuff since the '80s, but, to the best of my knowledge, it never actually went to space because it produced too many crumbs when eaten. So while it was developed for astronauts, no astronauts actually ate it while in space. If you don't want to spend museum gift shop money to try it, nibble on the freeze-dried "marshmallows" in Lucky Charms cereal -- very similar product.

I grew up in Kansas and we have the Cosmosphere where they sell the astronaut ice cream in the gift shop. On school trips it was a huge treat to get that stuff. So creamy and rich. Absolutely wonderful for a kid. Highly recommend.

Personally not a fan of the "donate to eco-charity to claim the carbon back" that is all the rage now. We are no longer just outsourcing manufacturing but also our our carbon footprint! They weren't donating to charities before they found they could claim the net carbon as there own.
