Customizing the Becker BK7 Part 3: DURACOATED! 

The epoxy coat in BK knifes is good, it protect high carbon steel from corrosion. Change epoxy for epoxy I prefer to save 60 bucks in duracoat and keep the factory, both going to wear overtime. Now if you remove the epoxy and sharp the secondary edge of the blade you potentially increase the slicing performance of the blade in deep cutting applications.

Hi Chris, could you show us how Jessica2 looks right now and how the duracoat held up after 3 years. I'm thinking of duracoating some knives and I'm curious to see how it holds up in the long term

Both BK7s you own are very handsome blades. The modding is fantastic! I'm a fan of and own the Bk2, but this BK7 is really beginning to tug at me. I have to get one. Watching this video has really given me the appetite for another Becker.

Chris I bought this knife based on your many vids and love it. Took it out in the bush and abused it straight out of the box. Did very destructive things with it. It will be my primary hunting/bushcraft knife from now on but not a skinning knife. That is a separate beast. I have no plans to modify it thou. It is great as is for us regular roughnecks.

I really liked this review, I did the coating on my own with a camo pattern, never used Jasco Bix before, but I like it, I also made my own handle from hardened oak with a black stain

It's 2020 and I just bought a new BK7 and I love the coating on it, it's on pretty thick and no way in Hell am I removing it ever! It's meant to be on the knife. Where I live it snows, when I go to the west coast, it rains a lot, so if you travel a lot, it just makes sense to leave the coating on. My BK9 looks pretty worn but the original coating is still on it and I love it and because my BK9 is the knife I use for heavy chopping and batoning, I have lightly sanded the coating and the blade feels very smooth, but I will leave the coating as is on my BK7. Some people pay good money for a good coating on a knife, so why pay for something that comes with the knife already???

Covered my BK7's handles with a section of bicycle inner tube but it's a bit loose and like your idea to use Wilson Sporting Goods Advantage Tennis Racket Grip. Know of a video where wrapping is demonstrated with good results?

I would be curious to see what that jasco stuff does to duracoat. Incidentally, I like what you did with the knife and the new look.

Hey Chris. If I want to strip a part of the spine for a striker plate, would it work to use a Dremel or other rotary tool? I don't mind the coating, but I hate watching people use the cutting edge as a striker for a ferro rod! Do you think that would work? Thanks!

Chris, have you or anyone else you may have talked to, ever modified the Zytel handle side scales on the Bk7? I know the scales are semi-hollow but I am just thinking of modifying my Bk7 by shaving a small amount off to make the grip more to my liking comfort wise. I know there are a few after-market sets of side scales but I can't afford the $40+ and postage. Wood grips can possibly swell and split (I live in a humid area) and the custom grips cost too much. Absolutely a great video series on the 7's mods ! Excellent info on a really good chemical stripper and the cautions that should be followed and adhered to. Love the 7's, 9's, 14's, all the Becker cutters ! Loved the J1, but love the J2 outcome even better ! I'm also big on the Becky. And for the people that don't get it, men have named weapons, cars, musical instruments, etc. after women for ions ! Get with the program.

Out of curiosity PM101. What is it about kydex you like so much mate? Is it personal taste or something you found about it that you like better?

chris i have a problem. my kabar bk7 has deep grind marks that i cant get rid of without major reshaping of the main bevel. and all i have is sand paper and a smiths duel sided diamond stone (that is wareing out). my favorite knife is now one i want to sell for what i paid for it. even my stripped kabar was bad just not that bad. have others had this problem with the kabar brand and do you have any cheap ideas perhaps? thanks future beckerhead sam

The duracoat job looks extremely well done. Did you have to sharpen it before you sent it in to get duracoated, or did you keep the factory edge when you shipped it to them? What angle would you put the BK-7 at if you were to sharpen it?

Just got done watching the WeBN FireWorks and then had to watch this immediately after when I saw how Good Jessica looks with the Tiger Stripes. I love all my Becker Knives but especially my BK7 BK9 Bk2 BK16. But I Loved the WEBN FIREWORKS this year. That and a Knife budeo. Great night. Lol. Keep up the videos. Thanks man.

Totally agree with you regarding steels. Too much focus and credit goes towards these latest "super steels." The fact is that for most people a good 1095, A2 or O1 is nearly perfect in terms of toughness, edge holding and a keen edge. The high end steels can be a huge pain to sharpen , even for experienced knife folk. Sure, its great that it held its edge 100% longer than 1095 BUT I can sharpen that 1095 in 10 minutes to a near razor edge while it would take me near an hour to do the same with S90V. And I doubt I could ever get it as sharp, so where is the advantage considering the price difference?

I wonder who my one hater is that makes it a point to thumbs down every single video I upload? If I had to thumbs down every single video, I'd probably watch another channel. Just sayin!

The duracoat won't rub off. Single color might be about $55-ish.

I want this sooo bad but the price has jumped to around 100 on amazon in the past few years. I will have it though. Did you use tennis wrap on the handle? I had thought about it for my bushman but didn't know how it would hold up to a beating.

I am also a huge fan of the BK7. I'd give it a rating of 5 out of 5 stars except for one gripe I have with it, which makes it a 4.5 out of 5 for me. The spine isn't square enough to use to create a spark with a ferro rod. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Ok Chris, i have watched lots of your videos and i know how you feel about the BK 7. If i had $160, should i buy a Esee 6, or a Bk 7 with godspeed kydex sheath??? This is my first really good primary knife purchase and i like both knives. I have large to extra large hands and i think the becker might fit better with the grip tape but esee knives have a kick ass warranty........FYI i shall name her Jennifer.....
