This is a great idea to see how your dad progresses with mountain biking...... I'm in a similar position to your dad but I've gone with an E MTB because it really helps me stay in control of my energy levels....... great to see you guys sharing your time together cos it's priceless, and I'm speaking as a guy who lost his dad a decade ago and never had the opportunity to share his autumn years with him.... So I'm going to follow your dad's progress with great interest because I can't wait to see him riding the trails as a superfit Guy very soon! Thanks for encouraging me too!... Best wishes to you both, Shakkers🇬🇧😉 Ps. So so envious of your access to Worldwide Cyclery, what a fantastic team of Professionals they are......

I am about his age and we have a real problem with thinking people real give a shit about us and are lives. God I could hear myself when he was talking. He even said what I always say. I have short legs and my torso is really long. I even say the same I should be 6ft 3 not 5 10. Now I was given the same garbage from my doctor years ago. We are the worst because we have all this motivation. We can drive people crazy. I am hoping he became a avid mountain biker. We get so full of ourselves when we loose weight I was hit with two bombs and was in a coma for a long time. Lost weight was excited also but that was years ago and I am getting into mountain biking because they are telling me it would help my PTSD . See I just did it again. 😂 who cares what happened to me.

MTBdropIN yes, if you have ever gotten a numb taint it's because your seat is pressing against some of the most important veins/arteries in the region. this is why men's and to a lesser extent women's saddles have a cutaway where the taint sits to stay as far away from the nerves and veins as possible.

I'll be 79 soon and was also diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, however, to date I've done nearly 4000 miles in the past 3 years between walking and cycling....about 55% was on the bike, I've now reversed the diabetes and sugar levels are down to normal, not only that I'm no longer on any medication. Kudos to your dad for his determination to get healthy and cycling is a great way to do it.

This video really hit home for me as I was in a very similar position as your dad. I’m 53 years old, and 18 months ago I had a double fusion (S1-L5...two titanium discs, 6 screws and four rods). I got tired of trying to deal with the pain through medication and started biking about two months ago. I have a Surly Karate Monkey Ops and began riding about 2 to 3 miles a day for the first week. Gradually I increased the distance to 20, 23, 25, 27...and I did 30 miles yesterday! Btw, prior to the last two months, I haven’t ridden a bike in 25 years, and I’ve lost 18 lbs. so far. Please tell your dad that biking will change his life...it changed mine! He can do this!!!

Do you realize how lucky you are to have a dad that’s got the balls to join his kid in this endeavor- unabashedly with all his physical limitations? Now he’s leading groups of people on rides and doing solo 100 plus kay rides solo for fun! His mental and physical health has skyrocketed thanks to bikes. I'm probably around the same age and weight as your dad, but a bit taller. Just bought a hardtail to try and lose some inches. Had the same initial saddle issues. Bought a wider 'comfort' saddle that's a bit softer than the one that came on the bike. That combined with some padded cycling shorts has made a big difference. I'm no longer walking like John Wayne after riding for a few miles.

So cool. Very happy for your dad to look forward from his surgery and get into mountain biking. I'm 43 and just got lectured by my mom about age and how I'm not young anymore. Meanwhile I'm trying to get my parents back out on their bikes.... paved trails.... but noooo.... gonna break a hip or something. Yet my mom keeps telling me all her cycling stories and how much she loves it. If they weren't 700 miles away I'm sure I'd have more of a fighting chance.

Tony, great job on being there for your dad and allowing him a way to get into something that he can share with you. I got my son into riding last year and haven't looked back. we have trips scheduled through out the year to visit different areas to ride. It has brought our relationship closer than it ever has been . Happy Trails my friend. P.S. to all the freaken haters - does it matter what bike or how much one spends on something, no it doesn't. First of all you do not know what his financial situation is, maybe the cost of that bike for him is like buying a $1000 bike. That is not the precipice of the story. Quit all your bitchin and go enjoy life.

Very cool man. Should have your dad and my dad meet. They're both talkers, they can have a contest. My dad's approaching 70, but he still rides, just nothing crazy these days.

The saddle that I use, I've had for 8 years. A Schwinn comfort reflective saddle. My set up is, a 2012 Diamondback, full custom build by me, and before that, was an off the shelf DB... and I, just like most every other bike mechanic will tell you... the saddle is the most personal part of your bike. No weekend warrior here... I'm a daily commuter. My bike is my car. Shopping, to and fro... and SoMo (SOuth MOuntain, Phoenix, Ariz), just for fun. ~That 70's BMX kid.

That's awesome that you bought your dad a bike I wish my kids would buy me one being that I'm type 2 diabetic with neuropathy in both legs a bad back and a neck they want to do surgery on both but not anytime soon. I really enjoy riding also I just have a mongoose xr250 that I try to ride but it's really heavy. I hope your dad really enjoys that bike and has fun on it.

I'm 5ft 8 with short legs, here's the large 29er lol. Then again when I saw the medium he looked like he was on an upright bike. I had the same problems coming from cross-country bikes in the 90s having learned to ride in a aero position makes a hard transition to the new geo. I have the same fit problems as the dad and trying to find a hardtail that has standover while not feeling cramped in the cockpit has been a challenge.

In late April, I was 330lbs and diagnosed with type 2 Picked up an MTB a week later Since then, I have lost 60lbs and my type 2 is now in remission - my A1C and glucose levels are back to normal ranges Tell your pops to be consistent and he'll make some great progress

@@MTBdropIN I didn't realize this video was a few years old How's your pops progress? I started riding not only because of health issues, mainly because I needed to stay active. I've been training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu since 2005 & covid squashed training. Wish I had started WAY sooner
